GREENSBURG YMCA - YMCA of Greensburg, PA

2014
ANNUAL
REPORT
GREENSBURG YMCA
Day of Action participants
www.greensburgymca.org
Dear Y members:
On behalf of the Greensburg Area YMCA Board of Directors, Board of Trustees, and YMCA staff, I
would like to thank you for your support during our 2012 - 2013 fiscal year. Our organization is truly
the front porch of our community, reaching many people in the Greensburg and surrounding areas.
Our facility serves individuals of all ages and abilities through our childcare and physical fitness
programs, wellness seminars, and services for those with special needs.
OUR MISSION
To put Christian principles
into practice through
programs that build healthy
spirit, mind, and body for
all.
OUR FOCUS
Our areas of focus include
Youth Development,
Healthy Living, and Social
Responsibility. We strive
to develop youth through
our program departments
including aquatics, child
development, gymnastics,
and sports. Our healthy
living focuses on educating
our members and program
participants of the
importance of healthy
lifestyle choices. Lastly,
but equally important,
is our focus on social
responsibility and impact.
We have been impacting
the Greensburg Community
for over 155 years and will
continue to do so through
our mission work.
Our facility and administration has experienced many changes over the past year giving us an
excellent opportunity to grow; listed below are a few highlights of how the Greensburg YMCA has
changed and progressed in 2012-2013:
Staff
After an in-depth search to find a new CEO, George O’Brien, formerly the Operations Director with
the Hanover Area YMCA accepted the opportunity and challenge of leading the Greensburg YMCA.
During the last fiscal year George has strengthened the Y fiscally and programmatically with an
energetic, diverse, and accountable team.
Programming
Our Greensburg YMCA Early Childhood Learning Center is proud to have a Keystone Star 3 accredited
facility to offer care and preschool to Westmoreland County. Changes to our popular summer camp
allows families to choose the traditional summer Adventure camp with a variety of activities, or our
newly added Summer Sports Camp which focuses on a variety of sports presented in a non-competitive learning environment.
Membership
A new membership engagement plan has been put into place. Each new member receives a hand
written welcome card from the CEO. Members now have more ways to provide feedback through
online surveys and a newly implemented suggestion box system. Membership rates were not
increased in the past fiscal year and will remain the same for the 2013 - 2014 fiscal year.
Facility
We continue to improve and reinvest in our facility by purchasing new equipment and renovating
many areas in our facility. This past fiscal year we have installed a new dehumidification system in the
warm water pool room, added security cameras throughout the building, installed two chair lifts for
our pools and we are adding 13 new innovative Keiser M3+ Indoor Cycles.
Fundraising
As of June 30th, 2013 our Strong Kids Campaign raised $36,208.07 thanks to the 128 donors.
Nineteen of those donors are Round Table Sponsors, contributing over $1,000.
Our 4th Annual Friends of the Y Event, held at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, was our most financially
successful fundraiser, netting $22,702 towards our front porch improvement project.
Employee contributions to the Westmoreland County United Way Campaign increased by 72% with an
increase of over 500% employee participation, earning us the Partner of Distinction Award.
In closing, we are very pleased with the direction of our YMCA and expect great things from the staff
and volunteers in the upcoming years.
Respectfully,
Linda Rusnock
President, YMCA Board of Directors

STAFF OF THE YEAR
Our YMCA has been blessed to have Valerie Milliron as our Accounts Payable Clerk for 16 years. In
the past year we have made significant changes to our business office all of which were meet with
enthusiasm by Val. She has been open to changes and has asked for help when needed along with
supporting our directors with questions they may have had. She is always eager to help with Child
Care needs as they present themselves along with the beautification of the front porch with your
spring and fall arrangements.
She like many of our staff is doing more with less and is doing so a high level. Thank you Val!

GYMNASTICS
SARAH JOHNSTON
GYMNASTICS
TORI YURCISIN
TRACK & FIELD
JULIA HOWARD
Ever since Sarah was able to walk, she had so much energy that her parents had a difficult
time keeping up with her. At the age of six, they decided to enroll her in tumbling classes
at their local YMCA. The instructors were quickly impressed with Sarah’s progress. They
seemed to think that she had some natural ability. It was not long before the coaches
invited her to join the competitive YMCA gymnastics team. She progressed through the
levels and is now a Level 8 gymnast! The sport of gymnastics “grew up” with her. Her
teammates became her best friends, her coaches became like second parents, and the gym
became her second home.
Tori Yurcisin joined the Greensburg Aerials gymnastics team in the Spring of 2005 and
quickly developed to a level 5 gymnast by that summer. Through her passion, hard work and
dedication, Tori quickly excelled in the world of gymnastics. Although Tori has been plagued
by many injuries over the years, she always managed to get back to the gym quickly
and resume her normal training routine. Over the years Tori has qualified and attended
Championships, States, and Nations every year. She was a level 9 gymnast and was the first
one in the Greensburg YMCA history.
Julia Howard’s summer track resume began in 2010 when she placed 8th in the high jump
(11-12 year old)—All American at the USATF National J.O. Championships in Sacramento,
CA. Julia achieve many other track accomplishments since then. Her most recent was this
year when she attended the USA Youth National at Indian University in Bloomington, IN
(15-16 year old). She placed All-American in four events: 3rd placed Heptathlon (3510); 2nd
place Triple Jump-Elite; 5th place—Long Jump; and 8th place High Jump. Julia is an honor
student, 4 year volunteer track and field coach for Seton Hill Track Camp, 6 year National
All-American, and in 2014 as a sophomore, she finished in the top 20 long jump & triple
jump at the PIAA States.

ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE
Our Y is community owned, managed by paid staff, but governed by a Board of Directors that help set policies and focus
specifically on the needs of our members and community. We are fortunate to have a group of committed volunteers on our
board and have established a list of goals. Please review these goals and if you have an interest in these areas or believe
we should add to this list please contact me. Together, with your help and input, we can achieve and expand our goals.
GOALS
1. Continue enhancing the facility to ensure member satisfaction
2. Provide innovative programming for youth, families, and active older adults
3. Collaboration with other local organizations to better serve the community
4. Increase awareness of the Y’s impact and all the Y has to offer the community
5. Board and volunteer development
We have opportunities within four committees including our Facilities, Program, Membership & Marketing, and the Fund
Development Committee. Each committee meets up to 10 times per year to assist the Y Board and management with
decisions to improve our Y and community. In addition to committee volunteer opportunities, we are always looking for
individuals interested in service projects, internships, volunteer coaching, custodial /maintenance, administrative work, and
collaborative projects.
Highlighted below are our Board of Directors and Board of Trustees all of which are volunteers. In the 2013-2014 fiscal
year, we had nearly 70 volunteers that accounted for over 3,000 hours!
