LOCAL RESIDENTS
WARNED OVER
DROP-KERB
SERVICE
CANCER CAMPAIGN
Clifton residents are being warned about a
spate of rogue traders offering residents a
drop-kerb service, where they are reducing
the incline of the kerb.
The new Be Clear on Cancer campaign, being
run by Public Health England, is highlighting
heartburn for most days during three weeks
or more, and food sticking in your throat
when you swallow, as possible signs of these
cancers.
Nottingham City Council is putting its support
behind the latest cancer awareness campaign
and is encouraging anyone with possible
symptoms of stomach or oesophageal (gullet/
foodpipe) cancers to speak with their GP.
The procedure is illegal as the materials are
of inferior quality and the workmanship is
dangerous and a hazard to the public.
Being aware of the signs of cancer and
getting an earlier diagnosis can make a huge
difference. Around two out of every three
people (67%) diagnosed with oesophagogastric cancers at the earliest stage survive
for at least five years, but only around 3% of
those diagnosed late.
Any residents taking up this offer will have to
pay for the kerb to be rectified and made safe.
Reports suggest the ‘contractor’ is a man
wearing a high-vis, non-marked vest and is
driving a white flatbed van.
Community protection officers are currently
working with Trading Standards to investigate
the activity.
Other symptoms of oesophageal or stomach
cancer may include food feels like it’s sticking
in your throat when you swallow, indigestion
on and off for three weeks or more, losing
weight for no obvious reason, trapped wind
and frequent burping, feeling full very quickly
when eating, feeling bloated after eating,
nausea or vomiting and pain or discomfort in
your upper tummy area.
The council’s advice to residents is to avoid
accepting any work offers from companies
around this matter.
Please contact Nottingham City Council on
0115 915 2000 and ask for the Highways
Service, or call 101 to report anything worthy
of note.

WILDLIFE TRUST
WORK ON
FAIRHAM BROOK
Notts Wildlife Trust (NWT) is also carrying out
enhancement work on Fairham Brook, the
nature reserve located on the south-eastern
edge of Clifton.
The site comprises areas of neutral grassland,
remnant reedbeds and small ponds, amongst
areas of scrub woodland. Originally, the land
was frequently waterlogged, leading to a
significant area of open fenland vegetation.
But, as a result of the deepening of the brook
itself, the water table has dropped drastically
and the fen habitat is declining steadily.
NWT intend to halt this decline by creating
additional ponds on the site to retain water,
reduce tree cover to slow water loss and
create a figure-of-eight ditch.
LOCAL JOBS FAIR
place and this includes scrub clearance and
topographical surveys. To avoid damaging
the peat layer, the ditches and ponds will
be created in autumn 2015. Whilst these
represent small pieces of mitigation for one
of Britain’s last heavy-handed drainage
schemes, it is hoped that this is the start of a
richer wildlife future for Fairham Brook.
Jobseekers in Clifton are invited to a local
jobs fair taking place at the Highbank
Community Centre on Wednesday 25th
February. The fair can help those considering
their next career move and will bring
together employers offering live vacancies,
application advice, the city’s awardwinning Apprenticeship Hub service and
a representatives from a number of other
schemes aimed at helping people into work.
The brook is a significant wildlife feature and
was once classed as the closest thing the
area had to a chalk stream. Unfortunately,
the brook’s channel was deepened and also
straightened by the Fairham Brook Internal
Drainage Board in the early 1980s.
The event comes against a backdrop of
falling unemployment. The numbers of those
claiming out-of-work benefits has fallen for
all ages groups. Despite encouraging figures,
worklessness remains one of the city’s main
focus points. This is to ensure that residents
are benefiting from the expanding economy in
the city.
This was done to improve the drainage of
surrounding agricultural land and to take
flood water away from Bunny village, but it
also drastically reduced the brooks ecological
value throughout the straightened section.
Read more about local Notts Wildlife Trust
projects on page eight.
Employers from a number of different
industries will be present on the day looking
to recruit. Attendees will also be able to get
advice on their applications, practical support
with applying for jobs and information on
training opportunities in their chosen sector.
This will take in water from the brook at times
of high water levels and transfer it through
the fen area, connecting some of the deeper
ponds and then slowly releasing the water
back into the brook.
There will also be advice and vacancies as
apprenticeships across sectors, meaning
applicants can study and earn at the same
time. For more information on the day, please
visit nottinghamjobs.com.
Overall, besides rewetting parts of the site,
it also increases the flood water storage of
the site. Some of the work has already taken

Local cycle and walking
route gets some TLC
When we were asked by Sustrans to
help look after the cycle and pedestrian
route at Silverdale Walk, Urban Pastures
immediately took on the job. We aim to
make our shared spaces cleaner, more
enjoyable, and friendlier to wildlife and
people, so improving a somewhat
neglected route used by many local
people was exactly the type of work for
us. The site has potential as an attractive
place for enjoying the wildlife during a

see it suffering from litter, dogs’ mess,
and path obstructions.
You may not be aware of Urban Pastures
yet, but since we started work in
September 2014 we have built a solid
reputation for working FOR FREE with
community groups to turn unloved and
underused outdoor areas into places
which the community can make use of
and take pride in.
Our team works hard to improve our environment so that we can all enjoy the
benefits of an aesthetically pleasing, clean, safe and wildlife-rich city. We work on
things like woodland management, general gardening, grounds maintenance, light
construction, and site clearance, particularly in the less privileged areas of
Nottingham. And it’s all FOR FREE!

NEW OFFICER IN
CHARGE OF 209
By Jade Brock
The phrase ‘new year, new start’ proves fitting
of the 209 Squadron. It will see the opening
of a brand new cadet centre for the Royal Air
Force Air Cadets and the Army Cadet Force in
the local area.
It has also seen the arrival of Fg Off VR(T)
Simon Howroyd, who will be taking up the
position of OiC 209 Squadron.
rifle on the L85A2 and eighth for pistol.
Simon left the TA in 2012 to focus on his
Air Training Corps career and his PhD in
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles at Loughborough
University. In 2012, Simon gained a
commission with the RAF VR(T) and was
awarded the rank of Pilot Officer. After a
brief stint as Squadron Adjutant & Squadron
Training Officer at 2229 (Loughborough)
Squadron, Simon was promoted to Flying
Officer in August 2014, and has now assumed
command of 209 Squadron.
He said: “Taking command of a 209 Squadron
is the pinnacle of my career in the Air Cadet
organisation so far.
“It makes me extremely proud to have
the opportunity to lead such a dedicated
squadron of staff and cadets and it is going
to prove a very exciting year, particularly with
moving into a brand-new joint cadet training
centre building in a few weeks.
“With such a wealth of different people and
different skill sets on the squadron, I look
forward to leading the most excellent cadet
experience achievable in the Corps today.”
Simon started his military life in 2001 with
145 (Altrincham & Hale) Squadron in the now
disbanded East Cheshire South Manchester
(ECSM) Wing. Simon represented ECSM
at a regional level on the L98A1 Cadet GP
rifle. Alongside his RAF marksman, Simon
also completed his Bronze and Silver DofE
Awards, BTEC in Aviation Studies, solo flights
in the Viking glider and Grob 115D Heron
through the Corps scholarship schemes.
In 2006, he studied a Masters Degree in
Engineering at Loughborough University
where he also joined 158 (Royal Anglian)
Transport Regiment as an Officer Cadet in the
Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers and
where he assumed the position of 2IC.
During his seven-year service with the TA,
Simon transferred to the Royal Logistic
Corps and competed for three years at the
TA Operational Shooting Competition and TA
Pistol Championships and won the former in
2009 and 2010. Simon was ranked 19th for

FILMMAKER
USING VIDEO TO
HELP BUSINESS
A local filmmaker has set up a new video
production company to help local businesses
promote themselves online. Laura Turner, the
founder of Fuzzfox, has been making films for
over 10 years.
She said: “A promotional video is one of the
best tools a local business has to get their
message across to potential customers. Our
videos can get across your personality, your
passion, your skill or even your wit; whatever
it is that makes you and your business
unique.”
Some of Fuzzfox’s clients have already
been reporting positive results. Jonathan
Rimmington of Gentle Giants Joinery in
Nottingham, who recently had a video
produced by Fuzzfox, said: “Just a couple of
days after I’d posted the video on Facebook,
someone got in touch with me wanting a huge
bespoke wall unit. I hoped the video would
help get me more work but I never thought it
would happen that quickly.”
The production company offers a number
of video packages on their website, as well
as bespoke quotes. For more details about

WEIGHT-LOSS FOR
LARK HILL GROUP
Lark Hill Slimming World group have lost a
staggering 129 stone since it opened just 12
months ago.
Angela said: “I opened the group and became
a consultant after losing almost four stone
and feeling so much healthier. I know that
carrying extra weight can be hard work and
it puts a strain on all your joints, so when Tim
came along, wheelchair bound and unhappy, I
could empathise with him.
“At 6’8” tall and greatly overweight, life was
becoming increasingly difficult for him, but
still he resisted any suggestion of joining his
local slimming group. Cajoled by his wife,
who was concerned for his health, he finally
went along and has not looked back.
“Now four stone lighter, Tim is on track to lose
even more weight. With the support of the
group, he feels that his personal goal is within
reach. Joining a group was the best step Tim
took and it could be for you, so why not come
along and see what its all about. You have
nothing to lose but weight.”

FUNDING FOR
LOCAL WILDLIFE
PROJECTS
Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust and their South
Notts Local Group are delighted to announce
that the funding for important work at Wilwell
Farm Cutting and Wilford Claypits nature
reserves is now in place.
These sites are two of the most important
wildlife sites and are designated as Sites of
Special Scientific Interest for their diverse
flora and habitats.
The funding is coming from a variety of
sources, with the Heritage Lottery Fund
providing £9,500 to carry out scrub clearance
on both sites, plus supporting a series of
training courses in species ID and habitat
survey techniques, as well as the production
of interpretive material for the two reserves.
Reserve, said: “The support we have received
directly from the Heritage Lottery Fund
and the Big Lottery-funded Awards for All
programme will make a tremendous difference
to two very important wildlife areas.
“It will also help ensure that local volunteers
are well trained and supported in their efforts
to care for these special places.”
This funding, along with the £1m Skylarks
Nature Reserve extension - also partly funded
by Heritage Lottery as well as Lafarge Tarmac
- and the Fairham Brook Enhancement
Project, funded by the Environment Agency
and SITA Trust, represents a significant
ongoing commitment to nature conservation
in the area by the Wildlife Trust.
During the summer there will be exciting
opportunities to go on guided walks round
Wilwell and Wilford Claypits to enjoy the
delights of our local birds, butterflies,
dragonflies and wildflowers.
Initially this winter efforts will concentrate
on getting some of the essential habitat
work done and the conservation training
completed.
If you want to know more about these
reserves, or about opportunities to join the
Wilford Claypits or Wilwell Nature Reserve
work parties, visit he website by logging onto
southnottswildlife.org.uk.
Awards for All will be funding essential
access work, practical nature conservation
training and equipment to the tune of £8,797.
In addition, Rushcliffe Borough Council are
providing another £1,750 towards habitat
management on both sites.
South Notts Local Group (NWT) will provide
another £750 from local fundraising towards
the project. When combined with the value
of volunteer time, this represents a projected
£28,000 boost.

RENT DEPOSITS –
LANDLORDS BEWARE
WHAT! YOU STILL HAVEN’T
SORTED YOUR WILL OUT?
By Curtis Parkinson
Chances are it’s about time that you either did a Will or updated your old
one and for just £49.95 plus VAT what is stopping you from doing it.
In a recent case in the Court of Appeal, a landlord was not allowed to
obtain possession of the premises after serving a section 21 notice.
This is because he had not adequately protected the deposit in
accordance with the statutory requirements of the Housing Act 2004.
That’s what a Will costs with Tim and Ann Pentz and, as registered Will
writers, they have drafted nearly 2,500 Wills for local clients during the
past 12 years.
All well and good you might say. However, the deposit in question had
been received by the landlord five years before the statutory provisions
came into force.
Did you know that without a Will your spouse may not inherit everything,
your unmarried partner may inherit nothing and people could inherit what
you didn’t want them to receive.
The lesson is clear. If you are holding deposits outside of one of the
approved schemes, notwithstanding that you received it before the
schemes came in, you will not be able to serve a valid section 21 notice
upon your tenant and thus apply for possession on that ground - unless
you repay the deposit to the tenant first. Take steps to protect the
deposit right away.
So, start this new year differently. Telephone them now and request a
home visit or ask for a free information pack through the post.
Curtis Parkinson Solicitors, Nottingham, provides advice to landlords and
tenants in all aspects of letting law. Please contact Bill Martin on 0115
964 7765 for more details.
And, who is there that is not worried about homes going to pay for care
fees so that the children lose everything?
Call 0115 871 2755 for further information about a Will.

FEBRUARY
GARDEN NOTES
By John Draper
spells you may want to cut the grass to keep
the lawn looking trim. Don’t be tempted to cut
the grass to it’s shortest summer setting, but
leave it much longer to reduce any harmful
effects from subsequent frosts.
February is normally the worst month for
winter weather of the year, let’s hope it
doesn’t deliver.
Its not to early to think about your lawncare
plans for the year and at least get the mower
blade sharpened.
February should be a mixture of rain, frosts
and milder spells. Soil preparation will pay
dividends and sowing seeds will give you and
the family a positive view of early growth.
After the winter, moss is prevalent on many
lawns. Treat with proprietary lawn feeds that
include a moss control or call a specialist
lawncare company like Greener Gardens.
Beds & Borders
Spring bulbs such as crocus, winter aconite
and snowdrops should be emerging in
protected areas of the garden. The pink
propeller blooms of cyclamen coum will also
be creating a delightful warm glow to areas
that are sheltered from the cold. They like rich,
well-drained soil and will easily self-seed if the
conditions are just right.
We complete a free no-obligation survey for
you. Trimming the outer edges of the lawn
into shape will provide a clear definition
between lush green lawn and the surrounding
flower bed.
Millions of gardeners have realised that
buying almost fully-grown plantlets in early
summer ready to plant out in patio pots,
hanging baskets and garden borders is not
the cheapest way of buying plant material.
The trend nowadays is to buy seedlings or
plug plants early in the new year and grow
these plants in pots indoors until they are
ready to plant out in the garden.
Lawncare
Don’t walk on the grass while it is frozen or
frosted. Crushing the frozen blades of grass
results in a burn that turns brown and the
footsteps will be visible for weeks. In mild
Grow your own
If weather conditions don’t allow you to get
outdoors, then use the time wisely to draw
up your plans for this year and order or buy
seeds ready to sow when they do.
When you get your veg seeds, make a
month-by-month seed sowing organiser in a
cardboard box or tin and store the seeds in
cool, dry conditions.
This way you won’t forget to sow something
at the right time.
Many gardening books tell you to sow seeds
of parsnip in February because they take a
long time to germinate.
Only follow this advice if you have cloches
to cover the soil at least a fortnight before
sowing and can be left in place until the end
of March.
Adding soil improver into the rows will help
break down the soil and provide a good seed
bed for sowing at the end of March.
Buy your favourite varieties of seed potato
from your local garden centre as soon as
possible, before they sell out.
Set them out in a single layer at the bottom
of a seed tray and keep them somewhere in
good light that is cool and frost-free.
The potatoes will start to produce sturdy
shoots ready for planting out later.
Patio Tubs & Baskets
Keep dead-heading winter pansies and feed
occasionally with a liquid All Purpose Plant
Food when the weather is mild.
Paths and Drives
Clean up any green mould growth on the
patio slabs, brickwork or walls with one
simple treatment with Patio Magic! Just water
or spray on during a dry spell – the active
ingredient works for several weeks to give
great control of mould, lichen and algae.
If you would like help with any lawn or patio
cleaning projects, don’t hesitate to call
Greener Gardens. We would be delighted to
provide a no-obligation quotation.

RECONSTRUCTING
A NEGLECTED
LAWN
By Prograss
Quite often we are invited to do one of our
free lawn health checks on a lawn that is
in such bad condition that the customer
has given up and is almost at the stage of
returfing or landscaping the area to have no
lawn at all.
However, all is not lost because Prograss
have a tried and tested method for
reconstructing neglected lawns to their former
glory and spring is the ideal time to do this.
1) We would do an initial intensive treatment
to control moss and weeds, plus tonic any
existing healthy grass. This would prepare the
lawn for what is to come.
2) Two to four weeks later, when the weather
conditions are suitable, we would return with
heavy-duty commercial machinery to first
hollow tine aerate the area with two passes to
reduce any compaction and also break up the
surface so the root zone of the grass can feed
and breathe.
3) We would then do an intensive scarification
using a 6bhp commercial scarifier to remove
any dead moss, thatch and weeds to create
a perfect surface for the overseed that is to
follow. This process would also chop up the
tines left by the aeration and create a free
topsoil/nutrient feed that will further benefit
the lawn as it goes back into the ground as
uncompacted soil.
4) We would then do an overseed using a
suitable seed, for example shade tolerant
seed if area is affected by shade, fescue/rye
mix if children will be playing on lawn etc.
We would also apply a pre-seed fertiliser to
encourage seed germination.
5) This would then be left for nature and the
customer to do their part by watering and
keeping the area clear, so within a few weeks
the lawn will start to recover. Although we are
always keen to point out that this process
is not an overnight one and depending on
conditions the lawn could take a while to be
where we want it to be.

ROUND THE
BRIDGES RACE
ON THE TRENT
to the line was the two-man crew of Phil Dean
& Ozzie Chmiel.
Twenty-six members of Nottingham Kayak
Club competed in the annual round the
bridges knockout race. Paired up in 13
doubles crews, they raced from the clubhouse
to Trent Bridge, round Lady Bay Bridge
and back to the clubhouse, with last crew
knocked out on each lap.
After the final turn, they comfortably took the
win and the money. They were followed over
the line by Hayleigh Mason & Stan Chmiel,
with third place going to Olympic silver
medallist Campbell Walsh & Ricky Millar.
Several crews showed their dominance in
the early rounds, but there was plenty of
excitement at the back with crews determined
not to go out. First out were Tom Corden &
Katie Shorrock.
A crash under Trent Bridge in one of the
early rounds saw three crews tied up, losing
precious time to the crews who managed
to slip round, leading to Pete Ilett & Cathy
Howell being eliminated.
The remaining crews stormed away from the
start line on their final lap. After the first turn,
an early lead was taken by Zyggy Chmiel &
Matilda Enoch – a gap which only grew.
If you want to have a go at kayaking or
canoeing, a come and try it session is held
every Sunday from 11am till 1pm at the club
on Trentside North. For more information,
please log onto the following website
https://sites.google.com/site/
nottinghamkayakclub or email
[email protected].
They were swiftly followed by Sarah Millest
& Abbie Durrant, Jacob Sliwa & Dave Hadley
and Pat Allinson & Jane Millar.
A battle of the girls was then on at the back,
with Caroline Jones & Alison Chmiel clinging
on one lap longer than Kat Wilson & Kasia
Chmiel. Despite nearly sinking, Andrew
Doughty & Nicky Cresser lasted one lap more
than Chris Carter & Taal Millard.
This left four contenders to fight it out to
determine the three crews to compete for the
prize money in the final lap. Losing this sprint
