Dear Readers
Spring has most definitely sprung.
It’s great to have longer, lighter
evenings and we intend to make the
most of them!
Keeping fit and eating well are the
two most talked about subjects
at NG HQ so we are very pleased
to introduce Andy our latest
contributor. His article on the
importance of eating the right foods
gave us even more to talk about!!
We all know mums make the best
cooks, so our recipes this month have
all been handed down from our very
own mums. If you have a favourite
recipe, please let us know and we
will share it with our readers.

Carbohydrates…
and your diet!
In an ever changing society, we
constantly fight the battle of obesity
that is now extending through into our
younger generations. Many stand with a
confused state of mind as to how they ‘let
it slip’ and ended up at the unhealthy end
of the scales.
We see so many people these days
jumping to attention with fad diets,
looking for a quick solution to only then
resort back to old habits.
Nutrition is about educating yourself with
some basic information, so firstly let us
look at the primary culprit within your diet.
CARBOHYDRATES.
Generally, we see the modern diet over
spilling with excess carbohydrates. This
is the first problem as the excess carbs
are not being converted into energy. The
body can only uptake 15-25g of free
glucose per meal and only 5g of that is
in your blood, the rest is stored in the
liver and muscle. The excess is then
circulated and passed, if persistent over
spillage continues it is then ‘stored’ by the
body resulting in increased body fat. Your
metabolic turnover is what will regulate
how quickly the excess carbohydrates
will become stored instead of being used.
So the first piece of advice given is to
observe your carbohydrate requirements.
Less active people need far fewer
carbohydrates than active people. See
them as your fuel source, regulate them
within your diet. Generally choose low
GI carbohydrates to help prolong energy
release resulting in a lower insulin spike
which will also help control sweet tooth
cravings. Generally speaking people
who do not crave a sugary fix tend to
eat more of the low GI foods. Making
meals regular will also help stabilise
carbohydrate requirements, resulting in
correct body fat management.
A great way to implement an alteration
in carbohydrates is to try swapping white
rice for brown rice, sweet potato instead
of white potato. Try to reduce as much
refined sugar from your diet as possible.
Healthier options like cocoa chocolate
come with added benefits as well as
a lower GI content. As a rule of thumb
your meals should have a 40% protein,
40% carbohydrates and 20% fats split to
maintain your body weight. Reduce the
amount of fruit in your diet and increase
your greens. This way you get just as
much from the 5 a day without the extra
carbohydrates.
Happy eating…

Ridewise, the Nottingham based cycling charity
have announced details of their 2015 Cycling
for All events. These events will see all ages
and abilities trying out bikes, some for the
first time. The project runs for the third year
following its huge success in previous years.
The vision is to inspire more people to
give cycling a go – be it for fun, health, or
independence. Accredited instructors are on
hand to help riders to build their confidence and
learn cycling techniques in a relaxed, safe and
informal setting. There is also the opportunity
to join a guided ride along the River Trent for
those with a bit more confidence.
The sessions take place every third Sunday of
the month, right through to October. Participants
have access to free bike try-outs, one-to-one
training and advice and guidance from friendly
instructors. They can also get free bicycle
health checks.
Those with disabilities, people learning to ride
for the first time or families practising to ride
together are all catered for. A wide range of
bikes will be available to try out including
commuter bikes, fun and family bikes and
specialist bicycles to accommodate different
disability needs.
Daniel, aged 9, said "It was awesome. I liked
all the different types of bikes you can try out."
The event takes place at Queens Drive Park
and Ride between 10am and 1pm. Hot and cold
refreshments are provided by the Pulp Friction
Smoothie Bar Project, a social enterprise who
employ and support young people with learning
disabilities.

Great News
For Graduates
According to the findings of a new study, the very
first wave of students to have paid higher tuition
fees will graduate into the strongest job market in
the UK for 10 years.
Researchers have found that prospects for
graduates have reached a record high, with over
four-fifths of the leading graduate recruiters in the
UK already offering or soon to launch paid work
experience schemes.
Taking on work placements, according to the
research, seems to be the best way for students
to secure employment after they graduate from
university. The findings showed that a third of jobs
were offered to graduates who had undertaken
work experience, internships or apprenticeships at
their chosen firm. Around half of recruiters said that
candidates with no work experience at all had “little
or no chance” of receiving a job offer, emphasising
the growing importance of experience alongside
high-level degree qualifications.
The fact that the UK job market is now a very
buoyant and strong one for graduates could not be
better timed, as it happens just as the first wave of
students to pay the new higher tuition fees will leave
university. The employment prospects available to
new graduates should hopefully take some of the
sting out of the new higher fees.

Brave Luca Is Looking
For A Home
An extraordinary cat rescued
by a local animal charity
is appealing for a forever
home.
When found by Animal
Accident Rescue Unit and
taken to a vet, it was unclear
if Luca would survive:
several large growths in his
mouth had stopped him from
even eating. Living rough
long-term, this pitiful feline was completely
emaciated and weak – and shockingly it is
likely Luca was abandoned because of his
ill-health.
Luca’s sickness was so severe, his recovery
has taken since August 2013 – thanks to
the volunteers’ and vet’s dedicated care.
The growths were removed and now Luca
enjoys his wet food, having had some teeth
removed. His coat, muscles and trust are
improving, as his fosterer says: ‘Luca enjoys
a fuss, sitting and playing with our family, and
so deserves a forever home with an older
family and no other pets.’
Sweet-natured Luca is 8-10 years old and,
as with all the charity’s cats, was bloodtested for FIV/Felv - for which he is negative
- worm and flea treated, microchipped and
litter-trained.
Could you offer Luca a home? If interested
contact the Adoption Volunteer on 01159985063 after 6pm, which must not be used
for any other enquiry or emergency, or email
[email protected]. All adoptions need
a successful homecheck, and no cats are
rehomed near or on busy roads.
Entirely supported by volunteers and
donations, Animal Accident Rescue Unit
constantly needs more cat fosterers; for
details email as above, leave a message on
0115-9321555, which can also be used for
other enquiries or visit www.aaru.org.uk.

Ella’s Teen Talk:
Health and Fitness
T
hese days everything seems so serious
with health and fitness: has the requirement of
five fruit and veg now changed to seven? Do we
Ella Higginbotham aged 17
need to be running for at least 20 minutes a day
just to keep in shape? What do we really need
to do to keep ourselves healthy? I don’t think
anyone knows! We all have our own personal challenges and goals when
it comes to health and fitness and can I just say that if you’re still
sticking to your new year’s resolution in this area then well doneI applaud you for probably doing better than the majority of the
population. However, appearance obviously isn’t everything but it’s
sometimes nice to feel more comfortable within ourselves so get fit
and motivated for yourself and no one else!
Health probably starts with the food you eat. A balanced diet is
the key to any healthy lifestyle so that does not mean going on
some crazy diet where you survive on a piece of lettuce a day
because that’s the exact opposite of good health! Be sensible and
remember the little changes make a big difference, for example
just reducing portion sizes and cutting out a few snacks here
and there will make a big difference to you feeling better in
yourself.
Next comes the dreaded exercise but worry not; fitness is all
about determination and motivation! Remember that your body
can do anything- it’s your mind that stops you so just push past
that barrier (although obviously don’t exercise yourself to the
point of sickness, that won’t help you at all!). Be optimistic and
go for it whether you’re at the gym, on a run, on a bike, at a
class or whatever you find yourself doing- just enjoy it! Find a
way to make it easier for you by trying music or games or a
gym partner to help keep you active and your fitness will
increase in no time!
At the end of the day, we all like the
odd slice of cake or lazy Netflix day
and who can blame us?! Life isn’t about
counting calories or losing that last
pound so don’t get too tied down by it.
Enjoy being your beautiful self by taking
care of your body and trust me, you will
feel great!

NOTTINGHAM'S
VERY OWN
Down by the riverside, set in an
old Victorian schoolhouse
you can find the stylish
Tom Browns Brasserie.
Named after the character in the
1857 novel by Thomas Hughes, ‘Tom
Browns School Days’, also set in a
Victorian Public School, Tom Browns
Brasserie has, for the past 29 years,
prided itself on serving fantastic
quality, fresh, modern, world cuisine
and providing superb service.
Outside, the dining terrace boasts
gorgeous views of the river making
it a great choice for the warmer
months. Fire pits and blankets are
available to keep you warm whilst
drinking or dining on those
cooler evenings.
Combined with the charm and
character of an old Victorian school,
décor is elegant, modern and
welcoming. A contemporary gas
fire, candles and relaxing music
giving it a cozy and peaceful feel.
Warmly welcomed by Dan, all the
staff were professional and friendly.
I had choices from either the Al a
Carte menu, or the Early Bird menu.
(2 courses £16.95 or 3 courses £19.95.)
A good selection of cocktails and
wines are also available.
My starter of crispy brie, chorizo,
beetroot slaw and a dressed salad
was delicious and
well proportioned.
For main, melt in the mouth lamb
shoulder, creamy mash, cavalo nero
and a minted jus, overall a very tasty
dish indeed.
The meal left me well satisfied,
but with just enough room to fit
in a special dessert that has been
designed for their Afternoon
Tea menu.
A creative and delicious burger
and chips for dessert! Style and
substance in equal measure. You'll
just have to go and see
for yourself!
With the weather on the turn,
down by the river, their Afternoon
Tea is a must.(Available MondaySaturday lunchtime. Prices
starting from £20)
Tom Browns also run fabulous
events throughout the year. (See
their website.) Their biggest and
very popular annual event is The
Glitter Ball. This year it will be held
on Saturday 4th July.
Open 7 days per week and like
the book of it's namesake, Tom
Browns is quality with a
great reputation.

You may wish to consider
fitting an alarm on your shed.
There are three types of alarm
system that could be used,
which are easy to purchase
from most DIY stores and

Property marking also makes
your belongings much less
attractive to thieves, as they
realise that the goods can
easily be identified as stolen

UV marking and
forensically coded systems
such as SmartWater are also
a great way to discretely mark
belongings.
Additional security measures
such as ensuring fencing

condition, installing security
lighting around your house

on driveways, will help deter
opportunist thieves.
Undertaking these security
measures this summer can
be the difference between
enjoying your leisure time in
the garden or becoming a
victim of crime.

We are delighted with the wardrobes, they
make such a difference to our room. We chose
the split panel design in black and soft white,
and went with the grey tinted mirror glass in
the centre.
The inside layout of
the wardrobe really
works well for us
having a side each
(her side is bigger
than mine!) then
behind the centre
door we share a
large column of shelving for linen, bedding
and jumpers etc, with wide drawers below.
Colin the fitter was very professional, turning
up at the right time on the right day, and
installing the wardrobes with no hassle. Great
job, thanks again. Mr & Mrs Baker, Sawley

from the lovely people at
Bumpy ride this morning? View blocked
by dumped rubbish? Potholes and fly tipping are just two of
the street faults that can be reported via the website www.
FixMyStreet.com, along with vandalism, graffiti, dog fouling
and many other common community issues.
While most of us know that the council are responsible for
fixing these things, we may not know which council, let along
which department in which council. With FixMyStreet, all
you have to do is locate the problem on a map, and select
a category: the site then sends it off to the right place to get
it fixed.
All reports are published on the site, as well as being sent to
the council. Browsing your own postcode can be interesting,
as you soon learn what the persistent problems are in your
area, and whether or not they are being fixed. There's also
the opportunity to discuss individual reports in the comments
section.
FixMyStreet comes from the UK not-for-profit organisation mySociety, and is one of its
longest-running and most-used services. It is just one of several projects aimed at making
it easier for citizens to get things changed in their own community. So, next time you see
something that needs fixing, be it a broken paving slab or a flickering streetlight, all you
need to remember is FixMyStreet.com.

2418 Squadron News...
2418 Cadet Reaches The Top
At Target Shooting
On a cold frosty morning in February, Corporal
Russell and Cadet Thurgood began their day by
cleaning the weapons they would soon be using,
the L98A2. Having finished stripping, cleaning, and
putting back the weapons they were confident that
they would perform properly and they were ready
for the day's shooting. After a detail of firing to zero
the sights they moved on to shooting the targets
on the 25 mtre range at RAF Wittering. These
shooting details ranged from
rapid fire, where you have a
set time to accurately shoot
all your rounds, to application
shooting where you have
all the time you need but
all the rounds need to be
both precise and accurate.
After the days shooting
Cpl Russell had achieved the
highest marksman of Corps
Marksman, after gaining
enough points from accurate
shooting to receive this award. Afterwards they
stripped, cleaned, oiled, and put the weapons back
together to be placed back in the armoury, all in all a
good day's shooting for 2418 squadron!
Nottingham’s No.1 Race Ahead At
Cross Country
Several nights of cross country training in the
cold and windy winter conditions, culminated in a
race on Sunday 15th Feb. As the cadets hopped
off the bus and began their warm up, the serious
tone of the competition ahead hit them! The track
was 3.5km for younger cadets and 5km for older
cadets, and although it was difficult for them, the
staff and substitute cadets encouraged them on.
After some dangerous
close calls at the finish
line,

3rd out of 29 squadrons,
which is great! They also
got to keep their favourite
saying;
‘Nottingham’s

Double BTEC Award For 2418 Cadet
Cadet Corporal Megan Perry was very pleased
to receive her BTEC award certificates recently
after all the hard work she has put in. She has
been awarded a BTEC in both public services and
Aviation studies. The BTEC in aviation studies
covers what she has learnt through ATC syllabus
lessons and exams in subjects such as Aircraft
Handling. Whilst the Public Services BTEC

Inside every prison is an Independent Monitoring
Board (IMB) made up of members of the local
community. They care about people. They are
volunteers with statutory duties and powers.
Members of a Board are drawn from all sections,
backgrounds and age groups within the
community.
Board members have access to all parts of the
prison. They have a duty to see that the treatment
of prisoners is fair and reasonable. Board members
talk directly to prisoners and staff to find out what
is really going on.

Gong Hey Fat Choy!
Here come the Dragons!
To celebrate Chinese New Year and the Year of
the Sheep, Rainbows Hospice for Children and
Young People has joined with Gable Events to
launch the seventh Nottingham Riverside Festival
Dragon Boat Challenge.
The
2015
Dragon Boat
Challenge
takes place
on Sunday
2nd August
as part of
the annual
Riverside
Festival and
is one of the
largest and most eagerly anticipated team events
in the region. Teams from Noble Foods (Silver
entry), Cardiology Dept, Grantham Hospital and
Axis M&E Consulting Engineers have already
signed up to take part and they are expected to
be joined by up to 40 crews from all over the East
Midlands, battling it out to be crowned Challenge
Champions whilst raising much-needed funds for
the Hospice.
No previous experience is required to take part in
the dragon boat racing, just plenty of team spirit so
why not take up the challenge? The dragon boats,
qualified helms and all racing equipment are
provided and each crew is guaranteed a minimum
of three races. Teams and spectators also benefit
from being part of one of the region’s largest
family festivals with a bustling fair and vibrant mix
of music, dance, crafts and food from around the
world, staged by Nottingham City Council.
The Challenge’s official charity, Rainbows Hospice
for Children and Young People, is the only children's
hospice in the East Midlands. Katie Baxter, Events
Manager, comments, "The Dragon Boat Challenge
is a fantastic opportunity for Rainbows as it gives
us a chance to raise essential funds with the help of
the local community. Thanks to everyone involved,
we are able to continue to be there for hundreds of
families.” The top fundraisers for Rainbows will win
the Charity trophy plus a special prize meal kindly
donated by The Riverbank Bar & Kitchen, situated
at Trent Bridge, not far from where the Challenge
takes place.
For more information and an entry form please
call Gable Events on 01780 470718 or visit www.
dragonboatfestivals.co.uk/nottingham. Deadline
for applications is 24 July.

Ever since the very first trailer I was very
excited to see this movie. After a considerable delay
Kingsman finally exploded onto the scene with nothing
but a conspicuous umbrella and expertly tailored
suit, reminding you of just how fun a globe trotting
espionage flick can be.
Kingsman: The Secret Service follows Eggsy (Taron
Egerton) as he is recruited to be a part of the secret
spy organisation, the Kingsman. While trying to
survive training he must also help to uncover a sinister
plot to unleash destruction upon the world.
The movie never takes itself too seriously, proudly
standing out from the Bourne’s and Bond’s of the
world, making this a more playful and exaggerated
take on the life of a spy that is a blast to watch.
This playful approach can definitely be seen in the
wide range of characters that star in the movie.
From the veteran Kingsman Galahad (Colin Firth)
who executes tasks, sometimes literally, with such
precision he can be seen to be more than human, to
the quirky antagonists of the movie Valentine (Samuel
L. Jackson) and Gazelle (Sofia Boutella); who bring
back the great dynamic of gleeful mastermind and
formidable femme fatal.
The great interest cultivated for the characters is in
great part to the excellent acting present on screen.
This can definitely be said for Egerton’s portrayal of
Eggsy, as he created a compelling character that we
genuinely route for throughout.
The action in this movie is a non-stop thrill ride of
awesome. The combat and pace of the scenes are
fast, fluid and brutal as you see what’s hiding behind
the unassuming guise of a Kingsman. The sequences
are well choreographed, with none of the action
being missed by awkward camera angles as you
feel every motion of their chosen weapon, whether
it be fist, gun or umbrella.
What makes the concept of this new spy-verse overall
even more impressive is the amount of time and effort
put into the lore behind it. The innovative history and
inner workings of the secret service are well thought out
making the Kingsman a well grounded and intriguing
organisation. Possibly the greatest example of the
films innovative and deep universe can be seen
within the gadgets at the Kingsman’s disposal.
Turning an umbrella into a lethal
weapon of mass destruction and a pair of shoes into a
hidden lifesaver the Kingsman have weapon ingenuity
that would even impress Q.
One aspect of the film that sadly constantly broke
that feeling of immersion was the CGI. The films
adventurous scope creates many thrilling set pieces
that just weren’t properly realised in the film; ruining
the stylish and sleek atmosphere the rest of the film
so brilliantly builds.
Overall Kingsman: The Secret Service is a fresh and
innovative look on the spy genre. With mind blowing
action that will leave you smiling at just how cool the
events unfolding in front of you are and characters full
of personality in a deep and fleshed out world, this
movie is simply a joy to experience.
Kingsman: The Secret Service = 8/10
