Parents are asked to register their child for the Baptism at least two weeks before the intended date. Instructional classes are on the last Thursday of the month, in the Rectory. Sacrament of Marriage Engaged couples should contact the Rectory at least six months in advance in order to arrange for their participation in the marriage preparation program. Anointing of the Sick If someone is homebound or in the hospital, please notify the Rectory. Arrangements can be made for the sick person to receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. Holy Communion is brought to the homebound by our Ministers of Holy Communion. The mission of St. Paul Parish is to build Community around the Eucharist and proclaim Jesus’ Gospel of Life and Love, through participation in liturgy, education and service. February 15th The Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time 2015 - LENTEN SEASON - 2015 The church’s official “Order of Prayer in the Liturgy” reminds us that our annual Lenten season is the fitting time to climb the holy mountain of Easter. The Lenten season has the double character, namely to prepare both catechumens and faithful to celebrate the Paschal Mystery. The catechumens, both with the rite of election and by catechesis, are prepared for the celebration of the sacraments of Christian Initiation; the faithful, ever more attentive to the word of God and prayer, prepare themselves by penance for the renewal of their baptismal promises. Lent runs from Ash Wednesday until the Mass of the Lord’s Supper exclusive on Holy Thursday. Lenten weekdays are not commemorated on solemnities and feasts. Ash Wednesday and the days of Holy Week take precedence over all solemnities and feasts. All memorials of saints occurring during Lent are observed as optional. Hence, they may be omitted or observed as commemorations. The Gloria and Alleluia are not sung or said from the beginning of Lent until the Easter Vigil. During Lent, the altar is not decorated with flowers. Purple or violet linens and vestments are used in order to reflect the penitential nature of the season. The readings for the Lenten Masses have been chosen in relation to the themes of baptismal renewal and penance. The gospels and readings from the Hebrew Scriptures have been selected for their mutual relationship. It is fitting that the Lenten season conclude, both for the individual Christian as well as for the whole Christian Community, with a penitential celebration, so all may be helped to prepare to celebrate more fully the Pascal Mystery. Such a celebration should take place before the Easter Triduum, and should not immediately precede the evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper. All of the parishes of the Archdiocese of New York will observe Reconciliation Monday on March 30th of Holy Week. LENTEN REGULATIONS 2015 Distribution of ashes should take place in a scared place, such as a church or chapel, preferably during Mass or service. Abstinence from meats is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday, February 18th and on all Fridays of Lent. The obligation continues to oblige throughout our lives. Those not specifically obliged to abstain from eating meat are encouraged to join in the discipline of abstaining to the extent that they are able. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Fasting means taking only one full meal during the day. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one’s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. Health permitting, those older than 59 are encouraged to join in the discipline of fasting to the extent that they are able. The special Pascal fast and abstinence are also prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday in order to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more deeply in His resurrection. By the threefold discipline of fasting, almsgiving and prayer, the Church keeps Lent from Ash Wednesday until the evening of Holy Thursday. All of the faithful and the catechumens should undertake the serious practice of these three traditions. Failure to observe penitential days at all or a substantial number of such days must be considered serious. 2 #438 WEEKLY COLLECTION EVERYONE MUST GIVE ACCORDING TO WHAT HE HAS INWARDLY DECIDED; NOT SADLY, NOT GRUDGINGLY, FOR GOD LOVES A CHEERFUL GIVER. LENT is a wonderful opportunity for us to examine our lives and see to what extent we are being faithful to the great commandment to “Love the Lord your God with your whole, heart, soul, mind and strength” and to “love your neighbor as you love yourself. The official start of LENT, of course, is ASH WEDNESDAY which, this year, takes place on February 18th of this week. This year, may we all resolve to make full use of our Lenten Journey, from start to finish, in order that we may deepen our relationship with God and one another. Participation in the Peter’s Pence collection affords each of us an opportunity to serve as witnesses of charity to our brothers and sisters around the world. This weekend’s gifts to this annual collection will assist our Holy Father in supporting the victims of war, natural disasters, and others most in need of assistance. On Easter Sunday 20913, Pope Francis, in encouraging all of us to be witnesses of charity, said: “Let us be renewed by God’s mercy...and let us become agents of this mercy, channels through which God can water the earth, protect all creation, and make justice and peace flourish.” Thank you for joining Pope Francis in serving as a witness of charity throughout the world. ____________________________________________ ST. As in the past, immediately following the pasta dinner, we are hopeful that everyone will join together for the very beautiful as well as moving practice of praying the STATIONS OF THE CROSS together in the church. “Lord, who throughout these forty days for us did fast and pray, teach us to overcome our Pasta with the Parish, on Friday evenings, provides us with a wonderful mixture of dining and socializing with fellow parishioners and the opportunity to pray together. The meal includes a beverage, salad, bread, pasta with meatless sauce and dessert. Wine is available for a nominal charge.
