The Spirit of Lent.
By Deacon Luke Conroy
As we enter the holy Season of Lent let us be
active listeners of the readings that are proclaimed
to us. They offer to us so much! In the cycle of
weekday readings, Lent falls into two parts. In the first three and a
half weeks, the Gospel texts are taken from the Synoptics
(Matthew, Mark, Luke). The message running throughout is a call
to a life of Gospel conversion. The verses that we hear speak of
beginning anew, of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving; of conversion;
of mutual forgiveness; of hardness of heart; of love of enemies; of
absolute claims of justice and love that transcends ritual and cult;
and of the call to holiness. Collectively, this is the essence of
discipleship. It is what Jesus asks of us if we are to follow him.
The readings for the second half of Lent are taken from the Gospel
of John. It is clear that these readings from John do not constitute
a kind of “crash course” in the life of Jesus, so much as a
presentation of the mystery Jesus Christ, the Son of God, of whom
John says that all who believe in him will have eternal life. Christ
is presented as the healer and life-giver, as the one who gives life
through his confrontation with death and gathers into one the
scattered children of God.
PARISH HAPPENINGS
Ashes will be given at all the
Masses in the Church
7:00am, 8:00am, 12:10pm & 7:30pm.
On Ash Wednesday, abstinence from meats
is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years
old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all
Fridays of Lent. Fasting on that day should
also be observed by Catholics who are 18
years of age but not yet 59. A suggestion:
take one full meal during the day: the two
smaller meals together should not equal the
full one. Snacking between meals should be
avoided.
How do these two sections of readings fit together and what can
they tell us about the spirit of Lent? The purpose of the first part of
Lent is to bring us to compunction. “Compunction” is related to the
verb “to puncture” and suggests the deflation of our egos, a
challenge to any self-deceit about the quality of our lives as
disciples of Jesus. By hitting us again and again with demands
which we not only fail to obey, but which we come to recognize as
being quite beyond us, the Gospel passages are meant to trouble us, Each Friday during lent Morning
to confront our illusions about ourselves. “Remember, you are Prayer follows 8:00am Mass in the

CATHOLIC COMMUNITY SERVICES HUNGER BOXES
Once again during Lent, our Parish and Religious
Education program will be participating in Catholic
Community Services of Rockland HUNGER BOX
Campaign, a faith formation program that helps
students experience our Lenten spirituality by helping
the needy of Rockland County.
We invite parishioners as well to participate. “HUNGER BOXES” can
be found at the entrance of the church beginning NEXT weekend,
February 15th. Your donations in this box will help provide food and
other emergency assistance to the people of Rockland county such as
emergency financial assistance to prevent evictions and utility cut-offs.
The cardboard Hunger Box is a tangible reminder of the hunger and
hardships faced by many people in our community who do not have
enough to eat each day. The Hunger Box also serves to hold the
sacrificial contributions families make during Lent, showing that small
