Zick req. by St. Margaret School faculty & staff 11:30 AM Rose Pino req. by Jenny Van Allen 4:00 PM People of the Parish 2-507 Dear Friends in Christ, This is our last weekend before we begin the holy and intense season of Lent. On Tuesday, Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday in English, is celebrated. There has been a carnival atmosphere for those who understand that from the Epiphany until this Tuesday, there is a culmination of eating and last minute revelry. While the first Mardi Gras in New Orleans was in 1837 for which the city is famous, the celebration has been well known throughout the world. In Sweden it is called Fastan; Martedi Grasso in Italy; Fastnacht in Germany and Carnaval de Barranquilla is Colombia's Mardi Gras celebration; amongst many others. Regretfully, Mardi Gras has gone from ridding one’s house of all sweets and delicacies to downright debauchery. There are areas of the Mardi Gras Parade in New Orleans where a decent person best avoid. What does it mean to us in New Jersey? For the devout, in order to understand a feast, one should experience a fast. If one can eat whatever they want and do whatever they want at any time, then how can we really understand a feast? When you cannot have something, it becomes more precious. It is good to discipline the body and soul. Lent is that opportunity. Eat, drink and be merry on Fat Tuesday and dig deep, giving up pleasures in order to find the core of oneself beginning Ash Wednesday. Jesus went into the desert where everything is stripped away from Him. Why do we think that we can embark on a mystical journey without divesting ourselves of the unnecessary? These last days should be Carnival (Latin carnem lavare or to take away meat). Then the meaning of Lent (springtime) will be a rebirth of the Spirit within the recesses of our souls. God bless you, Father Szolack SANCTUARY LAMP Please pray for the repose of the souls of: Jean Deery (sister of Don Krott and Joanne McConville) Frances A. Dowey, Daniel G. McIntyre Carl Zweigle, Jr. (father of Carl Zweigle, III) The Sanctuary lamp at St. Margaret Church is burning in loving memory of Sr. Lorriane Klein req. by the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of the Infant Jesus OFFERTORY COLLECTION GOD BLESS AMERICA! Amen End of Year Contribution Letter Tax letters were mailed out this week for anyone who contributed over $500 to Infant Jesus parish in 2014. (If you have not received a letter, please call the office.) If your contributions are not over $500, and would like a letter anyway, please contact the rectory via email at: [email protected] or by phone at 856848-0047. Please remember, the only way we can verify your contributions is by using church envelopes, personal checks or electronic giving. Thank you. 3-507 Family Prayer Crucifix for Vocations HOUSE OF CHARITY 2015 Each week we will see a family receive a Crucifix to take home for the week to pray for vocations to the Holy Priesthood and Religious Life. It is contained in a beautiful handcrafted box which also serves as a stand for the Crucifix. Prayers to be used by the host family are on a laminated program in the box. Every weekend the host family will return the Crucifix in procession. A new host family will receive it at the end of Mass. Let us pray for holy vocations to religious life from our parish. If you are praying over a possible calling, please speak to Father Szolack. Feb. 15 - Pronesti Family Feb. 22 - Morrison Family Our goal here at Infant Jesus Parish is $156,774.43 - to date we have raised $54,160.00 from the contributions of only 161 families!
