The Brunswick North School Council is made up of parents, community members, and teachers, principal and assistant principal and our role is to support the school in ensuring great learning outcomes for all students and help to create and sustain a positive community spirit at the school. In particular the council is responsible for reviewing and developing policies such as the Sun Smart policy for summer months at school, and oversight of school finances. In 2014 the school council worked to help develop a new four -year strategic plan and the main work in 2015 will be to support the implementation of this plan. As the council of 2014 we meet one more time in February (this week). Following that the vacant positions on the council will be filled through nomination and election (if there are more nominations than vacancies), Parent members on school council are elected for a two - year term. At the first meeting of the new council in March 2015 office bearers, President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary will be elected by the council. If you would like more information about the council and its role, or how you can get involved in the school, please don’t hesitate to contact me [email protected] or Sonia on 93831400. Regards Andrew Johnson Notice Of 2015 School Council Election and Call for Nominations As Andrew has mentioned in his School Council President Update, there is an election to be conducted for members of the School Council of Brunswick North Primary School this week. There are three parent member vacancies. I thank you for your support with this. Following the closing of nominations a list of the nominations received will be posted at the school on the notice board outside the school office. If there are more nominations than vacancies we will then be __________________________________________________________________________________________ Pearson Street West Brunswick 3055 Phone: 03 9383 1400 Fax: 03 93860583 OSHC: 0405 435 341 Email address: [email protected] Principal: Ms Sonia Abdallah conducting an election according to department guidelines. I have enclosed some further information about school council for your information. What is a school council and what does it do? All government schools in Victoria have a school council. They are legally formed bodies that are given powers to set the key directions of a school within centrally provided guidelines. In doing this, a school council is able to directly influence the quality of education that the school provides for its students. Who is on the school council? There are three possible categories of membership: • • • A mandated elected Parent category. More than one third of the total members must be from this category. Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) employees can be Parent members at their child’s school as long as they are not employed at the school. A mandated elected DEECD employee category. Members of this category may make up no more than one third of the total membership of school council. The principal of the school is automatically one of these members. An optional Community member category. Its members are appointed by a decision of the council because of their special skills, interests or experiences. DEECD employees are not eligible to be Community members. The term of office for all members is two years. Half the members must retire each year, creating vacancies for the annual school council elections. Why is Parent membership so important? Parents on school councils provide important viewpoints and have valuable skills that can help shape the direction of the school. Those parents who become active on a school council find their involvement satisfying in itself and may also find that their children feel a greater sense of belonging. How can you become involved? The most obvious way is to vote in the elections, which are held in Term 1 each year. However, ballots are only held if more people nominate as candidates than there are positions vacant. In view of this, you might seriously consider: • Standing for election as a member of the school council • Encouraging another person to stand for election. Do I need special experience to be on school council? No. What you do need is an interest in your child’s school and the desire to work in partnership with others to help shape the school’s future. What do you need to do to stand for election? The principal will issue a notice and call for nominations following the commencement of Term 1 each year. All school council elections must be completed by the end of March. If you decide to stand for election, you can arrange for someone to nominate you as a candidate or you can nominate yourself in the Parent category. DEECD employees whose child is enrolled in a school in which they are not employed are eligible to nominate as parents for the school council where their child is enrolled. Once the nomination form is completed, return it to the principal within the time stated on the notice of election. You will receive a Nomination Form Receipt in the mail following the receipt of your completed nomination. If there are more nominations received than there are vacancies on council, a ballot will be conducted during the two weeks after the call for nominations has closed. Remember • Ask at the school for help if you would like to stand for election and are not sure what to do __________________________________________________________________________________________ Pearson Street West Brunswick 3055 Phone: 03 9383 1400 Fax: 03 93860583 OSHC: 0405 435 341 Email address: [email protected] Principal: Ms Sonia Abdallah • Consider standing for election to council this year • Be sure to vote in the elections. This year I will be regularly writing in the newsletter keeping you updated with what’s happening around the school, in the classroom, with the curriculum programs and special events. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or would like a chat. As I rove around the school I have noticed how well all the classes have quickly settled into their routines. Currently, teachers have been discussing with their students their classroom rules and responsibilities. Each class has developed a classroom agreement, with student input, and that will come home to you to share and reinforce with your child. This term the Inquiry topics for each learning area are: Foundation: Marvellous Me at School! The Spirit of ANZAC Grade 1/2: About Me! The Spirit and Legacy of the ANZACS Grade 3/4: Healthy Citizens Stories of ANZAC Grade 5/6: Healthy Lunchbox ANZAC: Media & War As we are celebrating the 100th Anniversary of ANZAC, each learning area will be involved in a 4 week study on different ANZAC perspectives later in term one and two. I will let you know more Teachers are currently assessing students. A variety of different assessments are utilised across the school, for example, Foundation: Online English and Numeracy, 1/2: Online English and Numeracy, 3/4 On Demand Reading and Number and 5/6 On Demand Reading and Number. These assessments are used to determine the best program and approach to deal with individual needs. As we are introducing a new writing program across the whole school, The Big Write and VCOP, each class (except Foundation) will complete a ‘cold write’. This is a piece of writing that is done individually using a __________________________________________________________________________________________ Pearson Street West Brunswick 3055 Phone: 03 9383 1400 Fax: 03 93860583 OSHC: 0405 435 341 Email address: [email protected] Principal: Ms Sonia Abdallah set stimulus. This is done to establish a base line from which the teachers can then track student progress. This will be done regularly each term. The ‘cold write’ stimulus for this term is a recount: ‘Summer Holidays’. I will include more information about this writing program in my regular updates in the newsletter. On the events calendar we have quite a few things happening. This Thursday 12th February, we will be holding our Parent Curriculum Information Session where the teachers will share with you their curriculum plans for this term and the rest of the year. This is an important opportunity for parents to find out what your child will be learning across the year. Teachers will also inform you of the routines and expectations of homework, home reading, camps, excursions etc. An information pack will also be available. If you are not able to come a pack will be sent home with your child. Please let us know if you have missed out. We then have our Twilight Picnic on the 12th March quickly followed by the all-important Working Bee on Saturday 14th March where we require lots of volunteers to help transform the area next to the gazebo out the back into our wonderful Orchard Garden. If you can spare an hour or two please let us know by dropping into my office or emailing Tim: [email protected] Have a great week and stay cool in the hot weather! Lina De Fazio Assistant Principal L’angolo italiano We have been very busy remembering our vocabolario and using them in frasi ( sentences). I have been very impressed by how many studenti are actively remembering to use their ITALIANO and attempting sentences throughout la lezione. Even our quaderno cover has sentences on it to help us with simple conversazione. Why not quiz your child on what they have learnt so far. Compito will commence for all 3-6 next week. It should take no longer than 1020 per week and sometimes even less. It’s done so studenti can • think ITALIANO throughout the week as this helps to extend their one hour of weekly class time • it involve la famiglia with seeing what your child is learning in class • it helps with their organizational skills • share what they have learnt in Italiano with family and friends…it gets them talking in Italiano! As a Specialist class, compito is a very valuable tool to maintain language learning and interaction throughout the week. Your support is much appreciated. Of course please feel free to pop in anytime to discuss any issue and spare compito sheets can be found on my Informazione table outside of my aula. ITALIANO VIVO A reminder that all forms need to returned by this Thursday morning. Class lists will be put together by the end of the day and lists will be placed on classroom windows by Friday. The Parents & Friends (P&F) Group is an opportunity to meet parents and carers in the school community, and a fantastic way to become involved in our school and to assist with and plan school activities. The core purpose of the BNPS P&F is to help co-ordinate social and fundraising events for our school community. We meet once a month to discuss and plan future activities - anyone is welcome and you don’t have to be a member or on the committee to attend. Membership does have a couple of benefits though- you will receive copies of meeting minutes which is a great way of keeping informed if you can’t come along. The P&F Group communicate forthcoming meeting dates and details of events through the School Newsletter, flyers, the BNPS website (Parents & Friends tab), and via emails to members. ‘Tears and Cheers’ for Foundation Parents We’re pleased to say it was more ‘Cheers’ and less of the ‘Tears’ at the Morning Tea held on Friday 31st January. It was a great chance for new Foundation parents, and those who may have been there before, to mingle and share stories of their new school starters. We hope that it provided a way to celebrate your child starting school and to meet new friends. Thank you to those that helped us set up, serve, chat to new parents and pack up- your assistance is really appreciated. P&F Meeting – Friday 20th February - 9.15 am Our first monthly meeting will be held in the Genesis Room (around the corner to the right of the School Office Entrance) where we will be discussing the planned activities for Term 1, including the AGM. If you are curious as to know what the P&F is about, or have a hankering to assist with organising one of our social events, please feel free to join us. For a list of our planned social events, please see the P&F tab on the school website. Safeway BBQ- Sunday 1st March- WE NEED YOUR HELP! We have yet again pulled off a bit of a coup, and managed to get the coveted BBQ slot at the Albert St Safeway on the day of the Brunswick Street Festival. It’s a bit of a sneaky ploy- we can garner customers from the festival-goers who disembark from the train station, or those that duck around the back to Safeway to purchase festival necessities. Last year we managed quite a fundraising total, AND had a load of fun to boot. If you’d like to join in the excitement, you can let us know in a couple of ways: 1.
