Our Parish Mission
Liturgy Schedule
A Catholic community of faith striving to witness to
the Gospel. Our Baptism and Confirmation calls us
to bring Christ’s Love to our families, our work
places and our community. Grateful for God’s gifts,
we seek to nurture those gifts and to give back to the
Lord by sharing our time, talent and material
treasure. In all of our parish activities we seek to
develop a personal relationship with the Lord who
directs our lives and a vision that sees the world
with the eyes of Christ and that leads to a
commitment to justice. We seek a sense of unity in
Christ that leads us to be an open and welcoming
people and a sense of joy in being graced by the gifts
of God’s Love.

From Our Pastor
Dear People of St. Stephen,
“Return to me with your whole heart,
says the Lord.” This line from the
first reading of the Ash Wednesday
liturgy expresses the spirit of Lent.
Lent is a season of renewal. The
Lord’s call in Lent is meant for each
of us, no matter where we are on our
faith journey. Whether our need is to
renew a faith that has grown dormant
in our lives or simply to deepen our
faith, Lent calls us to renew and
strengthen our relationship with
Christ. Through the traditional
Lenten activities of prayer, fasting,
and almsgiving, our church calls us to
deepen our awareness of the presence
of Christ in our lives and to grow as
the Lord’s disciples. Our parish
Lenten theme this year – Lord Jesus,
walk with us in our suffering and
transform our lives – reminds us that
Christ walks with us at every stage of
our lives and especially in our times
of suffering. The Cross of Jesus is the
Lord’s ultimate expression of
compassion for us. Jesus shares even
our suffering and dying and also
leads us to new life by giving us to
share in His resurrection. In our
struggles, we are joined to Christ’s
sufferings and find hope and strength
in His promise of life. This Lent we
invite our parishioners to write a
suffering that they or others are
bearing on one of the paper crosses
on the tables in the narthex – a
suffering that the person wants to
pray for and wants our community to
pray for during Lent. We will place
the crosses on wooden crosses at the
back of the sanctuary, underneath the
large crucifix. The symbols remind
us that what is on the crosses is the
passion of Jesus in our present world
and remind us that we are not alone
as we deal with difficult times in our
lives. As a community of prayer
during Lent, we join in praying for all
those whose sufferings and struggles
are represented on our crosses.
Renewing
our
relationship
with
Christ during Lent also opens us to
the healing, merciful love that Jesus
brings to us. This Lent, on Friday,
February 27, and Saturday, February
28, our Archdiocese is joining
together in a special effort to make
the merciful love of Christ available
through
the
Sacrament
of
Reconciliation. All our parishes will
be offering special times for the
sacrament between noon on Friday
the 27th and noon on Saturday the
28th. Twenty-four parishes in all parts
of the Archdiocese will be open for
24 hours to offer the sacrament
during that time. The closest parish to
us that will offer the sacrament for 24
straight hours is St. Christina in
Chicago. We will offer expanded
hours for the sacrament on those days
– from 3:30 to 4:30pm and from 5:30
to 6:30pm on Friday the 27th and
from 8:45 to 9:45am on Saturday the
28th. More information on this effort
is elsewhere in the bulletin.
As you prepare for Lent, I encourage
you to keep two principles in mind.
First, growth happens when we plan.
Second,
growth
results
from
changing our habits. The Church
proposes three traditional activities
for our spiritual growth during Lent:
prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.
Prayer is that time we give to
building our relationship with the
Lord. Taking some special time to
strengthen our relationship with
Christ through prayer and reflection
is, for me, the key to Lenten spiritual
growth. A number of suggestions for
Lenten prayer and reflection are
elsewhere in the bulletin. Fasting is
giving up something to acknowledge
that Jesus is Lord and that nothing is
more important than God. Fasting is
meant to discipline us to focus our
values. We give up something to
affirm that God is at the center of our
lives. Almsgiving – sharing our
blessings – recognizes that all we
have is God’s gift to us and that we
want to use our gifts as the Lord
would want us to use them.
Almsgiving is a concrete expression
of turning away from selfishness and
turning
toward
self-giving.
Suggestions for Lenten fasting and
almsgiving are elsewhere in the
bulletin.
The goal of all our Lenten activities
is to renew our relationship with
Christ and to grow in living the
lifestyle of the followers of Jesus.
Lent is a more focused time for
spiritual growth. For Lent to have a
lasting impact on our lives, it needs
to be a time when we build habits of
prayer and Christian living that carry
over into our lives after the season
ends. Giving up something or doing
something for Lent is an excellent
discipline for spiritual growth. But
keeping in mind the goal of all our
Lenten activities – our growth as
Christians – will lead to lasting
spiritual growth. One good approach
to Lent is to identify a habit that you
would like to develop, a habit that
would enhance your spiritual life, and
then take a small step or two during
Lent to develop that habit. Growth
occurs in small steps and comes
about when habits change. In these
few days before Ash Wednesday, I
invite you to make a plan for your
observance of Lent and then commit
yourself to follow that plan and to
seek to grow as a disciple of Jesus
during this special season.
May God bless you and your loved
ones.

“The Little Black Book”
Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 18th. Once
again we have the Little Black Books available. This
book will help us to walk through the 50 days of Lent by
reading the scriptures along with explanations,
reflections, quotes and other information. All Catholics
are asked to devote more time to prayer during Lent and
the Little Black Book can be used daily to help us spend
time with the Lord.

The Gift of the Kingdom
Kingdom Retreat 2015
Saturday, March 21 and Sunday, March 22
The Kingdom Retreat is a great way for the adults of our
community to renew and strengthen their relationship
with God. It also allows you to reflect on your life priorities. You can get to know some fellow St. Stephen
members. This retreat gives you time to pray, worship
and participate in group activities. The registration fee is
$10. There is no set cost for the retreat, but a free-will
donation will be asked at the end of the retreat. There
are sign up forms in the narthex and in the parish office.
Please return the sign up form to the parish office and
mark your envelope “Kingdom Retreat”. Over the years
the Kingdom Retreat has been a renewing weekend for
many parishioners of all ages. It is a special time to reflect, pray and spend time with the Lord. If you have
any questions about the Kingdom retreat, please call Fr.
Jay or Karen Opyd in the parish office.

You arrive at 7:45am on Saturday; the retreat ends
mid-afternoon on Sunday.

This is not an overnight retreat.

Everyone goes home Saturday evening and returns
on Sunday morning at 7:30am.

Mass is celebrated on Sunday at 1pm with a family
dinner following.
The Eucharist is the center of our lives as Catholics.
Understanding the Eucharist and receiving the strength
of the Eucharist is a foundation for witnessing to our
faith and living it out in these challenging times. The
book “Bread of Life” by Fr. Louis J. Cameli, a priest of
the Archdiocese of Chicago, has been chosen for our
next book discussion. Fr. Cameli explores the meaning
of the Eucharist in modern day life and helps readers to
see the Eucharist from a contemporary and pastoral perspective. The book will be on sale in the narthex the
weekend of February 7th and 8th for $12. Small group
sharing of the questions at the back of each chapter will
be held on Thursday evenings at 7pm beginning February 19th and Saturday mornings at 8:45am beginning
February 21st. If you would like to start a small group
in your own home please contact Barbara Black at
[email protected] or 708.466.9962. We look forward
to having you join us.

Some Suggestions for Lent
Embrace the Disciplines of Lent
Prayer:
Share in one of the spiritual renew programs
on the opposite page

Read Scripture Daily.

Pray the Rosary, individually or as a family.

Attend Daily Mass...8am, Monday thru Saturday;
also, at 7pm on Thursday (English); 8:15pm Friday
(Polish).

Attend the Stations of the Cross...8:45am every Tuesday in the Daily Chapel and 6:30pm every Friday in
Church (English); 7:30pm every Friday in Church
(Polish).
Fasting:

Fast one day a week according to the traditional
Catholic Fasting day. Eat one full meal and two
smaller meals, enough to overcome some sin. Perhaps fast one day a week for peace, an end to violence in our society and for the safe return home of
all the men and women in our armed forces.

Give up something you enjoy throughout Lent. Fast
from candy or sweets or wine or whatever you
choose. Perhaps do this as a family. What you save
by fasting could be given to the needy, perhaps to our
St. Vincent DePaul Society or to the “Rice Bowl”
program to feed the hungry throughout the world.

Try to fast from some bad habit that detracts from
God’s presence among us; for example, fast from
putdowns of others or from bad language. Perhaps
fast on Friday and join us for the Stations of the
Cross in the evening.
Almsgiving:

Try to give of yourself in someway each day to
someone who is need. This could be by donating to a
charity or by taking time to assist someone with a
word of encouragement or by helping with a task.

Give up a particular food, e.g., dessert, and donate
perhaps to our St. Vincent DePaul Society or to the
“Rice Bowl” program or to another group that assists
the needy.

Try to do an act of kindness each day for someone in
your family or someone close to you.

Festival of Forgiveness
Pope Francis has described his vision of
the church as a field hospital in the middle
of a terribly wounded world. The Church
herself is populated by wounded and sinful
members, but by God’s grace she still serves as an
instrument of healing and forgiving mercy.
During Lent 2015, the Church in the Archdiocese of
Chicago wants to bring the medicine of mercy not only to
the Catholic faithful but also to anyone who stands in
need of healing and forgiveness.
From noon Friday, February 27 to noon Saturday,
February 28, the Church in Chicago will offer special
opportunities for the celebration of the Sacrament of
Penance and for prayers of healing. The Catholic
Faithful, especially those who have been away from the
sacraments, are urgently invited to come and share in
God’s mercy. That second weekend of Lent, Paul’s letter
to the Romans will be read at every Mass. And we, the
Church, will proclaim and embrace his words: “If God is
for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:11)
The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be offered here at
St. Stephen from 3:30 to 4:30pm and from 5:30 to
6:30pm on Friday the 27th and from 8:45 to 9:45am on
Saturday the 28th.

wants to pray for during Lent. We invite you to
place the cross in the basket marked "intentions". The
crosses will be brought to the altar and placed on
one of the crosses in the sanctuary to remind us that
we are not alone in our suffering and are joined with
the Lord who suffered for us.

Lenten Small Groups For Adults
The Gift of the Kingdom
St. Stephen is having Lenten small group faith sharing!
Some reflections from past participants
Want to have a good Lent this year?
One of our current team members, Joe Hoffman says,
“Need a change? Twenty years ago, my wife Joan came
back from a Kingdom Weekend and my life has never
been the same since. Do you need a change of some
kind? Join us on Saturday, March 21 & Sunday March
22 and experience your change. Looking forward to
seeing you in the Kingdom !
Come and follow a simple format for faith sharing
during the time your child/children attend religious
education. This is open to all members of the parish;
you do not have to have children enrolled in religious
education in order to part of the small group faith
sharing. All parish adults are invited! Also, if you
would like to facilitate a group at one of these times,
please contact the parish office at 708-342-2400.
Monday, February 23, March 9, March 23
Tuesday, February 24, March 10, March 24
Wednesday, February 25, March 11, March 25
4:30-5:15pm and 6:16-7pm
These groups will meet in church for one hour. Chairs
will be set up on the west side of the church in the St.
Jude area. A format with readings and prayers will be
provided for all participants and it is FREE, no charge
for materials!
My personal story is that I kept putting off going to the
Kingdom each year because I thought I was always too
busy to give up an entire weekend. And was I ever
wrong ! In 2012, at the last minute I decided it was time
to attend. And that was the best decision of my life. I
actually think it was the Holy Spirit who nudged me to
make the decision. I was definitely spiritually renewed,
Exhilarated and reawakened to Christ in my life. Another
benefit was the wonderful people I met who are dear
friends to this day. I want to personally invite each of you
to make this the year you experience that “Kingdom
Spirit”. (Barbara Black—Kingdom Weekend Lay Leader)

A Thank You from PADS Ministry
Thank You for Comedy Night
The success of PADS Ministry to the Homeless requires
many different things: volunteers who are willing to shop
for supplies, volunteers who are willing to prepare the
meals we serve and volunteers who are willing to serve at
the shelter. The generosity of donors to fund PADS
Ministry is also needed. On Super Bowl Sunday, our
youth group held their annual "Souper Bowl" collection to
raise funds for PADS Ministry. Thru the efforts of our
teens and thru your generosity, almost $2,500 was
collected. Thank you to our teen group and to those who
helped fill their kettles. Also, thank you to Moms and
Tots, who provided the dinner meal for our guests on
Friday, February 06.
Thank you to Comedy Night committee members Bill
Brady, Pam Franckowiak, Sharon Grill, Nancy Jaskierski, Rick and Kay Piatchek, Toni Rafferty, and Nanette
Young for all their efforts to enable us to have a very
enjoyable and successful Comedy Night last Saturday. A
good dinner and an evening filled with laughter warm the
spirits of over 250 guests – a great break from the dreariness of winter. In addition, the event raised about $4000
each for both St. Stephen and Cardinal Bernardin School.
Thanks also to all the volunteers who helped our committee members both of the preparations and at the event.
We look forward to the fifth annual Comedy Night next
winter.
THANK YOU—To the people of St. Stephen, please accept our sincere thanks for your prayers for our grandson,
Kevin Renderman. Over 4 years ago Kevin was diagnosed with a brain tumor. During this entire time he put
up a great fight. He went home to Our Lord last
week. Again, thank you for all your support and prayers. (Harry and Gloria Renderrman)

Stewardship
Stewardship Renewal Weekend
Our Stewardship Renewal Celebration will take place on
February 14th and 15th. We will celebrate our Stewardship
at all of the weekend Masses by inviting all parishioners
to take part in our Winter Ministry Fair. Following every
Mass we will have a ministry sign-up. Our parishioners
will have the opportunity to ask questions about our
ministries and organizations and then join them if they
wish. At tables in the narthex, we will have ministry
representatives, table displays and booklets that explain
what each ministry does.
During this renewal weekend we can reflect on the gifts
God has given us and how we can share them with our
church, our families and our community. Let us all pray
that we will make Stewardship a way of life
acknowledging that God is the source of all we have and
all we are. By generously sharing our time, talent and
treasure we will be responding to God’s call of sharing
our gifts with those around us. Stewardship Sign-Up
Weekends provide a great opportunity for us to get to
meet new members, share our faith with others and be
good stewards for the Lord. Our parish ministries need
you to share your gifts and enhance their work. Won’t
you consider joining a ministry and becoming more
involved in our parish community?
“Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace
given to us, let us exercise them.” Romans 12:6
You Are Invited!
God has given each of us many gifts and asks us to share
them with those around us. This weekend members of
many of our parish ministries are in the narthex inviting
our parishioners to share some of their time and talent
serving God’s people in our parish ministries. Think
about what you like to do, what you are good at and
match those talents with an appropriate ministry. You are
invited to share your time and talent! This is a great way
to show love and care for God’s people.
My command is this: Love each other as I have loved
you. John 15:12.
Parish Center METAL RE-CYCLING
Next weekend February 21 & 22, will be our monthly
recycling drive on our winter hours February 21th from
4:30pm to 6:15 pm and Sunday February 22nd from 9am
to 12:30pm. Our drives are on the third weekend of each
month. Please place empty metal cans into sealed plastic
garbage bags. The donations can be dropped off by the
truck or van located by the garages in the back of the
parking lot. An attendant will be available to assist you.
Thank you for your generous recycling donations. To date
we have collected over $5,000 toward the down payment
on the parish center. If your having a party, (remember
Super Bowl) family gatherings house cleaning, moving or
remodeling or just getting rid of things you no longer use,
please bring them to our collection. If you have items that
are too large to bring (i.e. washing machines, dryers,
stoves, etc.), please contact: Andy Deluca (708-606-3755)
or Bill Beavan at (708-403-2073) to arrange for pickup.
The 2015 Annual Catholic Appeal
“Entrusted with Responsibility”
Today we will have another opportunity to respond to the
Annual Catholic Appeal. The Annual Catholic Appeal
supports many important works of our Church, including
support for parishes, religious education programs, and
schools in economically challenged communities;
recruitment, education, and formation for deacons and
lay ministers as well as ongoing formation for priests;
Catholic Relief Services that provides aid for the poor in
foreign lands, especially in those places hit by natural
disasters; and support for ministries that promote the
dignity of each human life and provide comfort, care, and
counseling to people in need. As you consider your
support for the work of our Church done through
people’s generosity to the Annual Catholic Appeal,
please reflect on God’s gifts to you and on the
responsibility we all have that comes with these gifts.
Your gifts to our parish and to the wider Church
ministries should be given in gratitude for the continuing
gifts that God gives you. Each gift is important and
makes a difference to the important work of our Church.
Gifts to the Annual Catholic Appeal can be given over a
period of five months.
When our parish reaches our goal of $68,147 in
donations to the Appeal, 100% of the additional funds
will be returned to us for our parish’s needs. If you
received your Catholic Appeal form in the mail, you can
bring it to Mass or mail it back if you haven’t done so.

nieładzie, brodę zasłoniętą i będzie wołać: "Nieczysty, nieczysty!"
(1 Kor 10,32).

To help keep the list of names read at Mass and placed
in the bulletin accurate and current, we will keep the
name of a non-parishioner who is an immediate family
member of our parishioner on the list at Mass for two
weeks and in the bulletin for two weeks. For a
parishioner, we will keep the name on the list at Mass
for four weeks and in the bulletin for 60 days. We ask
that an immediate family member call after 4 weeks if
you wish to have the name continued to be read at
Mass.
