The Lenten season begins on Ash Wednesday,
February 18, 2015. Ashes will only be distributed
during these Masses.
Lenten Regulations
ABSTINENCE: No meat is eaten on days of abstinence:
every Friday in Lent, Ash Wednesday (March 5 and
Good Friday (April 18). Everyone 14 and older is
bound to abstain from meat on days of abstinence
(invalids, pregnant and nursing mothers are
exempt).
FASTING: Days of fasting, which means having only
one full meal, are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
Two smaller meatless and penitential meals are
permitted, but they should not equal the one full
meal. Eating of solid foods between meals is not
permitted. Everyone from age 18 but not yet 60
years of age is bound to fasting (same exemptions
as for Abstinence.)

Lenten Confessions
In the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation, also
called confession, we meet the Lord, who wants to
grant forgiveness and the grace to live a renewed life
in him. The Church encourages frequent confession in
order to grow closer to Christ Jesus and his Body, the
Church.
This Lenten season, the Archdiocese of Hartford is
working to make it easier for Catholics to experience
God’s love and mercy in this sacrament. All the
churches of the Archdiocese will be open for
Confessions every Monday during Lent from 6:00PM
to 7:00PM.

We are called to advocate for the most
fundamental of human goods and rights, in
particular, the right to life and the right not only to
profess our faith, but to live it out. We are
advocating for the freedom to “be Catholic,” to go
about our lives serving the needs of our brothers
and sisters, regardless of their race, creed, or
religion, not because they are Catholic but because
we are Catholic.

that the mandate is in violation of our First
Amendment right to religious freedom.

Diaconate Inquiry Sessions
The Archdiocesan Office of Diaconate Formation is now preparing to admit a new class of candidates for the
Diaconate in the fall of 2015. Any Catholic man between the ages of 35 and 60 who may be interested in the
Diaconate is encouraged to speak to his pastor.
Two inquiry sessions will be held at St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield on Sunday, March 8, 2015 and Sunday,
March 22, 2015 from 2:00 to 4:00PM. Both sessions must be attended, and spouses must also attend. Please call

2014 Tax Statements Available on Request
In an effort to be environmentally responsible and to save money, tax statements for 2014 are available by
request only. Simply call the Parish Office at 860-225-6449 during weekly office hours, Monday through Friday,
8:30AM to 4:30PM or drop a message into the weekend collection basket; include your name and address, also
indicate if you gave to the Annual Collection as that will appear on a separate statement. You can also drop a
message in the mail or stop into the office. All requests will be handled promptly and mailed out within one to
two days.
The Walter J. Kenney Scholarship is available to New Britain residents. This scholarship is a substantial
tuition award for one student renewable annually for up to four years. Applicants must either be enrolled in or
have demonstrated an intention to pursue an Engineering degree at a college or university offering such a
program, or have been accepted as a candidate for the Roman Catholic priesthood. Copies of the application with
eligibility requirements can be obtained in the parish office, or from your guidance counselors at your high
schools.
Eligible candidates are strongly urged to apply for this scholarship as they typically receive less than 10
applications each year. The application postmark deadline is March 1, 2015. Notification of the award recipient(s)
will be made prior to May 1, 2015.

From the Desk of the Administrator
During today’s First Reading from the Book of Leviticus, [Lev. 13:1-2, 45-46] we heard of society’s treatment
towards those who suffered temporary skin disorders. Being called unclean because of their afflictions, they were
isolated from the community. It is important to point out that in this particular reading and throughout Chapter
13:1-44 of the Book of Leviticus, reference is not made to leprosy but to temporary disorders that are curable.
This is based on the fact that the Hebrew word “sara’at” is used versus the Latin Vulgate Bible word that states
“lepra” which means leprosy. Although primitive hygiene considered such diseases as highly contagious, therefore
requiring isolation from the community, it was the religious and social ostracism that dictated that those who
were stricken by these skin disorders lacked the necessary bodily integrity to worship Yahweh. To ensure that
those who worshipped Yahweh were clean, when someone was suspected of having a skin disorder, he was sent
before the priest who would examine the person to determine that status of his condition. The priest did not do
this as a physician but as a judge who interprets the Law of Moses. Spiritually speaking,
this reading is symbolic of how the Holy Sacraments are administered by the Church.
Things have not changed! If one is not in a state of grace, not having repented of his sins,
nor received the Sacrament of Reconciliation, he is not permitted to receive the
Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. For one to enjoy communion with the Presence of the
Lord today, he is expected to be clean, in a state of grace.
Today’s Second Reading from the First Letter to the Corinthians [1 Cor. 10:23-11-1] is
summarized by saying that charity is the first spiritual Law by which Christians must live.
Charity must govern the behaviors of each and every Christian. The Christian behavior ordains that those who
shine in the light of Christ be servants of others, not offending anyone by their actions. They must not seek their
own advantage, but that of the others. For example, one may be comfortable going to Church while being
improperly dressed in the Presence of the Lord. But, because such a behavior may disturb the conscience of
others, Christian behavior ordains that it not be done. The Christian behavior ordains that because the conscience
of the person who is acting this way may not be disturbed, it is no reason for saying, “It is nobody’s business how I
dress!” One must love and respect his neighbors in who resides the indwelling Presence of the Holy Spirit.
Today’s Reading from the Gospel of Mark [Mk. 1:40-45] echoed the message related to dwelling in the Presence
of the Lord. To fully dwell in the Presence of the Lord, we must be one in mind. We must respect our neighbors,
and not to offend them. Today, the Holy Catholic Church does not mistreat those who choose to live in sin by
isolating them from the Body of Christ. While the Church condemns their actions, it loves and prays for the sinners
as Jesus loved them and died for their salvation. This is in the hope that the sinners will be healed by the grace of
God as those of the days of Moses where healed from their temporary skin disorders.
