Defending Our Religious Liberty
Every parish family should have received a letter from
Father George this week asking for a contribution to
our annual parish appeal so we can continue with our
parish improvements and help balance our budget.
Please complete your gift card and return it to the
parish office today. Thank you!
Organizations
such
as
church-sponsored
universities, hospitals and social services, are facing
a fine of $100 per day ($36,500 per year) per
employee if they provide health coverage that does
not include contraceptives, including abortioncausing drugs, and sterilization. Exorbitant fines like
these will surely force a lot of organizations that
serve tens of thousands of people to close.
If you haven’t done so already, please voice your
opposition to the mandate by calling President
Obama at the White House at 202-456-1111 or U.S.
Secretary of Health and Human Services Sylvia
Mathews Burwell at 202-205-5445. Let them know
that the mandate is in violation of our First
Amendment right to religious freedom.

who have had the training and a background check
should be working with children.
A VIRTUS training session will be held here at Saint
Francis of Assisi Church on Saturday, November 8
starting at 9:00AM in the Church Hall. The session
lasts about 3 hours and will end around 12:00Noon.

Youth Group Newsflash…
Our Youth Group needs help in raising funds to be able to attend the World Youth Spectacular Event in Poland in
2016. We are having a Redeemable Bottle & Can Return on December 6th & 7th after each Mass. We ask that you

other matters and encourage our youth to get involved in the community. We look forward to seeing all of you
there. If you have any questions about this fundraiser, please contact us at [email protected].
Why Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament?
Inspiration from Mother Theresa: “Through Mary, the cause of our joy, you discover that nowhere on earth are
you more welcomed, nowhere on earth are you more loved, than by Jesus, living and truly present in the Most
Blessed Sacrament. He is really there in person, waiting just for you.”
Let us be present to Jesus for Adoration and Benediction on Friday, November 7, 2014, here at St. Peter Church,
New Britain, from 1 – 3PM. All are welcome, if just for a brief visit.

Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
From the Desk of the Administrator
October 26, 2014
The First Reading that we have read from the Book of Exodus [Ex. 22:21-27] spoke of the loving relationship that
the Israelites men should have towards those who were under-privileged. The responsibility was upon the men
because in those days, they were the authority over the families. The under-privileged were the aliens (the
immigrants), those who were forced to leave their homes because of circumstances such as wars, plagues or
famines. As we heard during the reading, the Israelite men were reminded of their loving obligation to take care
of the needs of the widows and the orphans. God wanted their needs to be taken care of by those who were
more fortunate. The Israelites were reminded that if the widows and orphans were neglected or abused and their
cries reached out to Heaven, God would hear them and His anger would punish the aggressors. Their families
would suffer the same consequences, their wives becoming widows, their children becoming orphans. The people
were reminded that if they abused the ancient Law and the victims of this abuse cried out to God in prayer, He
would hear their cries and He would no longer answer the prayers of those who abused the Law. They would be
denied the blessings that they had received in the past.
In the Second Reading, Paul reminded the Thessalonians [1 Thess. 1:5-10] of his living example among them for
their sake so that they may grow in Christ. Paul’s example is also the Lord’s example.
To fully live one’s Christian life, it is necessary to become imitators of God, as beloved
children, to live in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant
offering and sacrifice to God. The examples of St. Paul and many other Christians
shined in the love of Christ so others may know the way of Christ. Paul acknowledged
that through persecution, the Thessalonians persisted in their living faith, receiving the
Word of God with joy that was inspired by the Holy Spirit so that they could become as
living models to others who heard about them in Macedonia and Achaia. These are the communities where Paul
was residing when the good news about the Thessalonians reached him. Joy in the faith during persecution is the
fruit of the Holy Spirit and true imitation of Christ. Here, we also perceive how salvation comes through suffering.
During today’s reading from the Gospel of Matthew, [Mt. 22:34-40] Jesus was asked by the Pharisees what was
the greatest Commandment. This question was reasonable since like today, the Law of those days contained 613
different Commandments. 248 of them were favorable while 365 were things that should not be done. And, when
considering these different Commandments, they all had degrees of excellence or sinfulness. Jesus answered by
saying, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with your entire mind. It
summarizes the first four of the Ten Commandments given to Moses. [Ex. 20:1-11] Placing God first in one’s life
means walking in faith and the love of God. The second greatest Commandment is, “You shall love your neighbor
as yourself. The second Commandment means that if we have the love of God within us, it should shine towards
others. Love is meant to be shared, not to be selfishly kept to oneself.
Peace and goodness to all!
