LENT
This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday. It is a solemn day of prayer and
penance which begins the great penitential season of Lent, our forty days of preparation
for the celebration of the Lord's passion, death, and resurrection during the Easter
Triduum. We begin Lent by marking our foreheads with ashes. It is an ancient custom
which dates back to the earliest centuries of the Church, whereby we wear ashes as a
sign to ourselves and to others that we have sinned and are in need of repentance. Our
ashes are a call to others to please pray for us. In themselves, ashes have little meaning.
The "dust" into which we shall return, taken by itself can be perceived as just a morbid
reminder that one day we will die, and can even become an empty superstition rather
than a religious act. But received in the light of God's revealing Word, ashes take on
their proper meaning. God's Word reminds us that it is not the death of the body but the
death of the soul that is to be feared. Through the Scripture readings God calls us to
return to Him with our whole heart. It is for this reason that the Church has placed the
reception of ashes within the framework of the reading of Scripture. Therefore, in
accordance with Church norms, ashes will only be distributed at Mass or during a
scheduled prayer service. The Ash Wednesday schedule is as follows:
Masses: 7:15 AM
8:30 AM
Prayer Services:
12:00 PM
7:30 PM
4:00 PM
Canon 1250 of the 1983 Code of Canon Law states that all Fridays of the year and the
time of Lent are penitential days and times throughout the universal Church. On
Fridays outside of Lent, the traditional form of penance - abstinence from meat - may
be substituted by another form of penance if abstinence would cause an undue hardship.
All Fridays of Lent, however, are days of required abstinence from meat.
Abstinence forbids the eating of meat (including chicken and other poultry).
Abstinence obliges from the 14th birthday on. In addition, the Church marks Ash
Wednesday and Good Friday as days of more substantial penance, which we mark by
fasting. Fasting prescribes that only one full meal be taken. Two smaller meals may be
taken to maintain strength, but these two taken together should not equal another full
meal. No solid food is to be eaten in between meals. Fasting obliges from the 18th to
the 60th birthday. Healthy individuals who are outside the required age brackets for fast
and abstinence are nevertheless encouraged to observe these disciplines if possible, or
else to perform some other form of penance. There is a serious obligation to observe
these penitential practices in a substantial way. Those whose work or health would
be impeded are excused from fast and abstinence. Individual conscience should decide
proper cause for excuse. A more serious excuse is required to excuse oneself from Ash
Wednesday and Good Friday fast and abstinence.
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of Fast and Abstinence
All Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence

Saint Ann’s Parish
6th Sunday in Ordinary Time
February 15, 2015
This week we begin Lent. It is our forty day retreat that prepares us to celebrate the Paschal Mystery of Jesus’
suffering, death, and glorious resurrection. In its fullness, Lent is the final preparation for those who are to be baptized at
the Easter vigil. We join along with them in their final preparation by our own penitential works.
Have you ever gone through a Lent doing perhaps the same thing we do every year, only to discover at the end of
Lent that we haven’t really changed? If this is happened to you - and it has happened to me many times - then maybe what
we need to do is change our focus on Lent. Perhaps we should try not merely giving up something but finding of bad
habit, a vice, a weakness in our personality that would like to change during these forty days, and then tailoring a penance
to help us grow away from that sin and closer to Christ. Certainly, anything we do must always include extra time in
prayer.
I would like to suggest to all of us here at St. Ann’s Parish that we work this Lent on intentional discipleship, that
is, making a concerted effort every day to truly follow everything the Lord Jesus teaches us, to make sure that our faith is
not merely something we take off the shelf for an hour on Sunday at Mass, but that following the Lord Jesus occupies our
every thought, our every action, our every belief, our every decision, indeed, our entire being. A faithful Christian should
always be able to say with St. Paul, “for to me, life is Christ.” If we can tailor a Lenten penance that leads us towards
closer discipleship in the Lord we will indeed grow during these forty days.
We will be having a special Lenten presentation on one of the days of Lent, which is still in preparation, along
with the traditional offerings. This year, since we have begun Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament every Friday, we will
continue with Adoration in the chapel from 9:00 AM until 8:00 PM. Since we also always celebrate the Stations of the
Cross on Fridays of Lent, we will pray them immediately following Benediction in the chapel at 8:00 PM every Friday.
It is my most fervent hope and prayer that we will use our Lenten journey to truly grow closer to the Lord and
become better disciples of Jesus by the time we celebrate his suffering death and resurrection during the Easter Triduum.
