It was important to recognize the presence of the boys and their leaders dedicated to Scouting. Several Girl Scouts joined us as well. At the conclusion of the Mass awards were presented to the following Scouts: From Pack 600 – Parvuli Dei: Nicholas Bevinetto; Light of Christ Giuseppe Mendola & Jesse Bonura. From Pack 689 – Parvuli Dei: Aidan Heddle, Sean Costelloe and Zane Uddin. Please visit our parish website under “Through the Lens of Fr. John” to view photos taken at last week’s event. Congratulation to all of our Scouts, their leaders and families! Page Three “LET’S TALK ABOUT THE COMING SEASON OF LENT” The holy season of Lent is my favorite liturgical season. I think this is because Lent has always reminded me that its time to join others in our annual opportunity to take more seriously my commitment to Jesus and the Church, to the practice of our religion and to reset the priorities of our life. One of my favorite commentaries on the Season of Lent comes from a gift I was given back in 1996, the Saint Andrew Bible Missal. I’d like to share the introduction to the season of Lent that can be found in this inspirational liturgical book. “For many Catholics Lent revives the memories of days when candy, movies, weddings and other signs of human celebrations were “given up”. There is an old sense of Lent as a time of self-imposed penance and asceticism. The explicitly religious expression of the season might have taken the form of weekly stations of the cross and daily Mass. Lent was to be endured. There is a legitimate sense of prayer, asceticism and charity towards neighbor that are authentic hallmarks of the Lenten season. There is a genuine need to identify again with the suffering of Jesus. What is really new for us is the need to see all practices and prayers in the light of the Church’s annual retreat in preparation for the Triduum. During those three days new Christians will be born from the font of baptism and all Christians will welcome them with an enthusiasm kindled anew through reliving our own birth in Christ. Lent is first, last and foremost about baptism. Baptism is about going down with Christ unto death, and being raised up with him to glory. This death and rising can be celebrated only after it has been experienced and lived in the daily fabric of human life. So Lent is about dying to self for the life of others. Lent is about dying to all human supports, which blind us from seeing that true life is in God alone. Lent is as serious as coming to know that the deepest meanings of human life are seen in Jesus who fights every temptation to take the world by power, force or the razzle-dazzle of miracles. The Lenten fast begins with Ash Wednesday. On this day we are signed with a cross for we live under and in that sign. The sense of Lent as preparation for initiation and its renewal. . . .” I invite you to ponder these words as we prepare to enter the holy season of Lent once again this coming Wednesday. 435 St. James Page Four The Sixth Sunday, Sunday February In Ordinary 2, 2014Time 435 St. James Sunday, February 15, 2015 Time Twenty-Sixth Sunday,Sunday February in Ordinary 2, 2014 Page Five 435 St. James Page Six The Sixth Sunday In Ordinary Time Weekly Stewardship of Treasure Report WEEK OF: MASS February 1, 2015 1ST COLLECTION CHURCH CAPACITY Maintenance & Repairs 850 2ND COLLECTION MASS ATTENDANCE 4:00 PM $ 4,370.00 $ 572.00 536 8:00 AM $ 2,106.00 $ 359.00 203 $ 430.00 $ 446.00 $ 504.00 $ 0.00 $ 30.00 $ 2,341.00 310 215 352 9:30 AM 11:00 AM 12:30 PM Online Giving Weekly Env. REFLECTING ON THE WORD (from Sadlier Publications) Mark 1:40-45 Question of the Week: How do you show pity to those who suffer or are in need? Today's story describes a man who is so excited and happy that he has to tell everyone he meets what has happened to him. The man with leprosy firmly believed that Jesus could cure him and he begged Jesus to do so. Moved with pity, Jesus stretched out his hand, touched the afflicted man, and said, "Be cured." And the man's deformities were immediately healed. Although Jesus instructed him to speak only to the priest about his cure, the man could not restrain himself. He told so many people that Jesus had to retreat to the desert to avoid the crowds who followed him everywhere. When you feel especially blessed by God, what do you do about it? How do you share your feelings about your experiences of God's love and his healing power? When you see people in terrible need on TV newscasts or in the newspapers, are you moved with pity for them? What do you do about it? Upcoming Events: On Saturday, February 28, 2015 from 9:00 am until 11:00 am in the Parish Center, the Book Nook has arranged a one-day sale of items for First Holy Communion and Confirmation. We will have a vendor with: Boys and Girls First Communion Sets, Arm Bows, Ties, Veils, Missals, Rosaries, Bibles, Photo Albums, Picture Frames, Keepsake Boxes, Rosary Bracelets and Crosses. Many Blessings, Julie and Marianne All Catholics who have reached their 14th year are bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent. Catholics between the ages of 14 and 59 inclusive are bound to also observe the canonical fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday: limiting oneself to one full meal in the day and avoiding food between meals. 2 other light meals which together do not equal a “full meal” may be taken during the day. 435 St. James Page Eight Twenty-Sixth The Sixth Sunday, Sunday Sunday February Inin Ordinary Ordinary 2, 2014Time Time ASH WEDNESDAY SCHEDULE FEBRUARY 18, 2015 Note Well: Ashes will only be distributed during Mass and each of the Services of the Word, not before, nor after.
