Dear Parishioners:
It is difficult to believe that Lent is upon us
once again.
While this is a season of penance and self
denial the good thing is that we know it
leads us to Easter and spring. We go
through this annual 40 day period to
parallel the 40 days that Jesus spent in the
desert praying and fasting. Our prayer may
increase during this time and our acts of
self denial and penance may seem heroic
but compared to what Jesus went through
they are only a token.
Jesus took upon himself this 40 day period
so that he might be a more effective
messenger of the Father and that through
his efforts more people would come to know
the beauty of the message of salvation he
was preaching. In response to his ministry
others would present themselves for
Baptism and proclaim the Gospel in word
and deed.
This whole process is called evangelization
and the last three Popes have been
emphasizing the need for a new
evangelization for our time. Each of them
has seen church numbers decline and
people fall away for any number of reasons.
They want to reach out to them to welcome
them back and encourage them to once
again practice their faith; not in a casual,
occasional manner but as serious Catholics.
While Popes can make speeches and priests
the preach very often we are talking to the
converted. It is up to you; the men and
women in the pews to bring that message to
others. You are being called to take on a
continuation of the mission of Jesus.

This Lent while I encourage you to make an
effort to attend daily Mass, expand your
prayer life and take on works of charity; I
specifically ask that you reach out to one
person and invite him/her to come back to
church. Let this be our parish Lenten
mission; individually and collectively-to call
back those who have left us.

The Archdiocese of New York Men's
commission is hosting the First Annual
Men's Conference on Saturday, March 21,

and Joe Klecko, former all-star New York

Church office by 1:00pm where it will be

Rev. Lucian Clark is a Passionist priest
stationed in Jamaica, NY. A native of
Pittsburgh he holds a Masters in Education
and has studies Scripture in Jerusalem. He is
the founding Director of the Passionist
Volunteers international responsible from
recruiting and training college grads for
working in Honduras and Jamaica
FAST AND ABSTINENCE
All Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence
from meat. This obliges everyone who is 14
years old and beyond.
Fasting permits only one full meal a day.
Two smaller meals may be taken but should
not equal one full meal. Fasting obliges
those who are 18-59 years old and in good
health.
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days
of fast and abstinence.
