A quick quiz: St. Valentine was:
a) a priest in the Roman Empire who helped persecuted Christians during the
reign of Claudius II, was thrown in jail and later beheaded on Feb. 14.
b) a Catholic bishop of Terni who was beheaded, also during the reign of
Claudius II.
c) someone who secretly married couples when marriage was forbidden, or
suffered in Africa, or wrote letters to his jailer's daughter, and was probably
beheaded.
d) all, some, or possibly none of the above.
If you guessed d), give yourself a box of chocolates. Although the mid-February
holiday celebrating love and lovers remains wildly popular, the confusion over
its origins led the Catholic Church, in 1969, to drop St. Valentine's Day from the
Roman calendar of official, worldwide Catholic feasts. (Those highly soughtafter days are reserved for saints with more clear historical record. After all, the
saints are real individuals for us to imitate.) Some parishes, however, observe the
feast of St. Valentine.
The roots of St. Valentine's Day lie in the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia,
which was celebrated on Feb. 15. For 800 years the Romans had dedicated this
day to the god Lupercus. On Lupercalia, a young man would draw the name of
a young woman in a lottery and would then keep the woman as a sexual
companion for the year.
Pope Gelasius I was, understandably, less than thrilled with this custom. So he
changed the lottery to have both young men and women draw the names of
saints whom they would then emulate for the year. (a change that no doubt
disappointed a few young men). Instead of Lupercus, the patron of the feast
became Valentine. For Roman men, the day continued to be an occasion to seek
the affections of women, and it became a tradition to give out handwritten
messages of admiration that included Valentine's name.
There was also a conventional belief in Europe during the Middle Ages that
birds chose their partners in the middle of February. Thus the day was dedicated
to love, and people observed it by writing love letters and sending small gifts to
their beloved. Legend has it that Charles, duke of Orleans, sent the first real
Valentine card to his wife in 1415, when he was imprisoned in the Tower of
London. (He, however, was not beheaded, and died a half-century later of old
age.)

ARE YOU PREPARED?
Today, thanks be to God, the evil of leprosy is not part of our society.
Therefore, it can be very difficult to get into the real context of today's
readings. We have to understand that during the time of Jesus, leprosy meant
exclusion, rejection and the end of a "normal" life for a person. Regardless of
their status, role in the family, or work performed if you had leprosy it was the
beginning of the end. Being cured of leprosy would be like getting a second
chance at life. Some of these stories of survival are familiar to us in another modern condition
when we hear how some people are cancer survivors. It is a second chance in life!
Consider for a moment our 2,000 years of history together. What is the cause of exclusion and
rejection in our society today - or even in the Church? Do we have those who "live apart"?
Why do we still have other forms of exclusion, slavery, trafficking and disease that impose not
only a heavy burden on those affected but also on their families and for society as a whole? If
you ask any of these people who are victims of any oppression or violence if they want to break
free, I think we will hear what Jesus heard: "Of course I want to be free (healed)!"
Contemplating the exclusion and rejection in our world we hear the words of St. Paul as a
guide: the Christian way is not working "for my own benefit but for the benefit of all others".
This reading mentioned how God always brings people back to him, how merciful He is;
meanwhile men have a tendency to exclude, label, and set apart those who are considered too
risky. The events we celebrate this week are proof of God’s openness to all. We put ashes as a
sign of our own desire to be included in God’s family, expelling from us what is sinful, unclean
and evil.
The imposition of ashes reminds us that we will someday die and our bodies will become dust.
It gives us a lesson that everything (material) we have here is transitory. Instead, all the good
we have in our soul will lead us the eternal. At the end of our life, we will only take the good we
have done for God, for us, and for our fellow men. As we see, the ash is not a magical rite, it
does not take away our sins, for this we have the Sacrament of Reconciliation. It is a sign of
repentance, penance, but especially conversion. It is the beginning of the journey of Lent,
where we are accompanied by Jesus from the wilderness of the desert until the day of victory
on Easter Sunday.
It should be a time of reflection, renewal, silent and profound prayer. It is a time to make our
decision from now on to following Jesus. We can
start with the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
Repentance of our sins, by itself does not delete
them, but we need to make an effort to keep the
grace of God in all our actions, words and
sacrifices in all the moments of life. This should be
a time to understand where we are going
(especially in our Christian life), to analyze how
my behavior impacts positively those around me.
This is also a time to give the best of ourselves,
sharing what we have, and loving without
measure. It is a time to believe in the Gospel.

PER LA GLORIA DI DIO
Tutta la storia del popolo Giudeo e’
diretta ad un solo obiettivo: che Dio sia
glorificato per mezzo del popolo scelto.
Anche i Cristiani sono chiamati a “fare
ogni cosa per la gloria di Dio”. Nelle scritture di oggi
San Paolo ci rammenta che il miglior modo di
glorificare Dio e’ di cercare di far bene “alla
moltitudine”, come Cristo fece quando diede il suo
sangue per tutta l’umanita’.
La lettura da Levitico spiega un modo che i Giudei
cercarono di far bene alla moltitudine, mantenendo
lebbrosi e lebbra lontano dal popolo scelto. Gesu’
trova un modo migliore. Egli cura il lebbroso, che
immediatamente rientra nella comunita’ per
diffondere la buona novella di Gesu’ a chiunque
l’ascolta. In questo modo sia Gesu’ che il lebbroso
eseguono la loro chiamata di glorificare Dio che ci
riempie “con la gioia della salvezza”.
LENTEN REGULATIONS
Here is what the Catholic Church in the United
States asks of us as baptized Catholics:
1.
The days of fast (only one meal) and
abstinence (no meat) are ASH WEDNESDAY
(18th February 2015) and GOOD FRIDAY (3rd
April 2015)
2.
The other Fridays of lent are DAYS OF
ABSTINENCE (No meat).
Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to
fast (only one full meal) as above. From the age of 14,
people are also obliged to abstain (no meat: this
obligation prohibits the eating of meat, but not eggs,
milk products or condiments of any kind, even though
made from animal fat). The obligation, the privilege
really, of receiving the Eucharist at least once a year -- often called “Easter duty” --- for those in the state
of grace should still be fulfilled during the period
from the First Sunday of Lent, February 22nd to
Trinity Sunday, May 31st, 2015.

Please be advised that the students of Confirmation &
R.C.I.A. will be having a retreat in preparation for
their Confirmation celebration. The retreat will be
held on two days, Friday March 20, 2015 from 5:00
p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Saturday March 21, 2015
from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The retreat will
conclude with Mass at 4:00 p.m. for all students,

READING OF THE DAY
FOR THE GLORY OF GOD
The entire history of the Jewish
people is directed toward one goal: that
God might be glorified through the
chosen people. Christians, too, are called to “do
everything for the glory of God.” In today’s
scriptures Paul reminds us that the best way for us
to glorify God is to seek to benefit “the many,” as
Christ did when he shed his blood for all of
humankind.
The reading from Leviticus explains one
way the Jews sought to benefit the many, by
keeping lepers and leprosy away from the chosen
people. Jesus finds a better way. He cures the leper,
who immediately re-enters the community to
spread the good news about Jesus to everyone who
will listen. In this way both Jesus and the leper
fulfill their calling to glorify the God who fills us
“with the joy of salvation.”

Gospel: Mark 1:40-45
Jesus manifests the powerful, healing love of God
by curing the leper who was forced to live under
severe restrictions by Jewish legislation. He turned
to Jesus in his need and was filled with joy. We are
called to imitate the healing and compassionate

¿ESTÁS PREPARADO?
Afortunadamente, hoy no encontramos el mal de la lepra en medio de
nuestra sociedad. Por lo tanto, puede ser difícil entrar en la profundidad
real de las lecturas de hoy. Tenemos que entender que la lepra significaba
la exclusión, el rechazo y el final de la vida "normal" para una persona, sin
importar su condición, su papel en la familia o su puesto en un grupo social
o laboral. Ser curado de la lepra sería como recibir una segunda
oportunidad en la vida. Algunas de estas historias de supervivencia las escuchamos con
mucho impacto especialmente cuando oímos hablar del cáncer. ¿Cuál es la causa de
exclusión y rechazo hoy en nuestra sociedad - o incluso en la Iglesia? ¿Quiénes son los
que tienen que "vivir separados"? ¿Por qué aún tenemos otras formas de esclavitud, tráfico
y enfermedad? Si le preguntamos a cualquiera de estas personas que sea víctima de
cualquier tipo de opresión o violencia, si quieren liberarse, creo que escucharemos lo
mismo que Jesús escuchó: "¡Por supuesto que quiero!" Contemplando la exclusión y el
rechazo en nuestro mundo podemos escuchar las Palabras de San Pablo como una guía: el
camino cristiano no es trabajar "para mi propio beneficio, sino para el provecho de todos
los demás".
Esta lectura de Inclusión por Dios, y de Exclusión por otros, adquiere un gran sentido por
los eventos que celebraremos en esta semana. El marcarnos con la ceniza es una señal de
nuestro propio deseo de incluirnos en la familia de Dios, excluyéndonos de aquello que es
pecaminoso, inmundo y malo.
La imposición de ceniza es una costumbre que nos recuerda que algún día moriremos y
que nuestro cuerpo se va a convertir en polvo. Nos enseña que todo lo material que
tengamos aquí se acaba. Al final de nuestra vida, sólo nos llevaremos aquello que hayamos
hecho por Dios y por nuestros hermanos los hombres.
Este debe ser un tiempo de reflexión para todos, de entender a donde vamos
(especialmente en nuestra vida cristiano), de analizar cómo es nuestro comportamiento
con nuestra familia y en general con todos los seres que nos rodean. Este es un llamada a
la conversión contínua, al arrepentimiento, la
penitencia y la abstinencia, y también al
sacrificio de dar: lo mejor de nosotros
mismos, el compartir lo que tenemos, lo
bueno que hacemos. Es un tiempo para amar
sin medida, y para creer en el Evangelio.
Recuerden que para Dios cada uno de
ustedes vale mucho... a Él no le importa lo
que hiciste o lo que fuiste, Él quiere hoy
renovarte y demostrarte cuanto te ama.
Nunca estás solo.
¡Que Dios bendiga sus vidas y sus hogares!

LECTURA DEL DÍA
PARA LA GLORIA DE DIOS
La historia completa del pueblo judío
va dirigida hacia una meta: que Dios sea
glorificado por medio del pueblo escogido. Los
cristianos también están llamados a “hacer todo para
la gloria de Dios”. En las Escrituras de hoy Pablo nos
recuerda que la mejor manera que tenemos para
glorificar a Dios es buscar el beneficio de “todos” tal
como Cristo hizo cuando derramó su sangre por toda
la humanidad.
La lectura de Levítico explica una manera en
que los judíos buscaban el beneficio de muchos,
manteniendo a los leprosos y la lepra alejados del
pueblo escogido. Jesús encuentra una manera mejor:
cura al leproso, que inmediatamente retorna a la
comunidad para difundir la Buena Nueva de Jesús a
todo el que le escuche. De este modo tanto Jesús como
el leproso cumplen con su llamado de glorificar al
Dios que nos llena “con la alegría de la salvación”.
NORMAS DE LA IGLESIA DURANTE LA
CUARESMA
Este tiempo que culmina el Jueves Santo (2 de abril),
es un tiempo de penitencia, sacrificio, oración y
caridad cristiana. Las siguientes son normas
específicas de nuestra Diócesis durante la temporada
de Cuaresma:
1. Los días de ayuno y abstinencia son Miércoles de
Ceniza (18 de febrero) y Viernes Santo 3 de abril)
2. Todos los viernes de Cuaresma son días de
abstinencia, es decir que toda persona de 14 años o
mayor no deberá comer carne, ni salsas hechas con
carne.
3. Los viernes del año, fuera del Tiempo de
Cuaresma son designados días de penitencia, (algún
tipo de sacrificio voluntario como abstinencia de
carne u otros).
Aquellas personas entre los 18 y 59 años de edad
están obligadas a ayunar, es decir, podrán comer sólo
una comida completa al día. Si gozan de buena salud,
los mayores de 59 años pueden también hacer este
sacrificio.
Sírveme de defensa, Dios mío, de roca y fortaleza
salvadoras; y pues eres mi baluarte y mi refugio,
acompáñame y guíame. (Salmo 30, 3-4)

LOS ORÍGENES DEL DÍA DE SAN VALENTÍN
Un examen rápido, San Valentín fue:
a) Un sacerdote del Imperio Romano que ayudó a perseguir
a los cristianos durante el reinado de Claudio II, fue puesto
en la cárcel y más tarde fue decapitado el 14 de febrero.
b) un Obispo católico de Terni quien fue decapitado,
también durante el reinado de Claudio II.
c) alguien que casaba secretamente a parejas cuando el
matrimonio era prohibido, o que sufrió en África, o alguien
que escribió cartas a la hija de su carcelero, y que
probablemente fue decapitado.

cuando esta fiesta celebrada a mediados de febrero, en
honor al amor y a los amantes, sigue siendo sumamente
popular, la confusión sobre sus orígenes condujo a la
iglesia católica, en 1,969, a sacar el Día de San Valentín
del calendario romano oficial, de las Fiestas católicas del
mundo (aquellas reservadas para los santos con un
expediente histórico más claro. Después de todo, los
santos son personas reales que debemos imitar) Algunas
parroquias, sin embargo, observan la Fiesta de San
Valentín.
Las raíces del día de San Valentín están en el antiguo

men who are discerning the possibility that God
