Rabbi’s Ruminations
You have heard this blessing
many times: “…asher bachar banu
mikol ha’amim v’nattan lanu et
torato….” When Torah is read, it is
recited before every aliyah. What
does it mean?
Let’s consider two translations of
the Hebrew: We bless God…
…Who chose us from among all
peoples and gave us the Torah.
…Who chose us from among all peoples by giving us the
Torah.
In the first, the relationship between God and our biblical
ancestors encouraged God to choose us as recipients of
Torah, a timeless legacy of lore and law.
The second translation indicates that Torah itself is what
makes us special; our reverence for our sacred literature and
the traditions developed from it is how we choose to be chosen.
The Torah describes our covenant with God. This covenant
does not confer superiority nor does it preclude others from
developing their own covenant with God; they will do (or
have done) so, albeit differently.
To preserve our “chosenness,” we must earn or maintain
the distinction of our covenant.
We all lead busy lives. Even so, it is enriching to make the
time to celebrate and commemorate with our families at
home or with community at synagogue. When we choose to
light Shabbat candles or invite friends to Shabbat dinner,
when we learn to read Hebrew, attend services, visit the sick,
remember the yarhzeit of a loved one, or volunteer in the
community, we are choosing to use the gift of Torah.

From Our President
As you have seen me write and
heard me say so many times,
there is always a lot happening at
Beth Judah. In the past few
months, we have revitalized
committees, we are planning
social events and educational
programs, and we have embarked
on new marketing efforts.
Nearly 30 women made challah
at the first monthly Rosh Chodesh Gathering (“A Time for
Us”) and our Tot Shabbat has been growing, thanks to the
energy and skills of Morah Andrea (Zakheim-Poetsch) and
Morah Sandi (Zakheim-Nord). Our adult learning and art
sessions have been well attended.
In our Galeem (religious school), we have a new flex-ible
schedule to make it easier for students to attend classes.
And that’s not all. There is a new excitement at Beth
Judah. As busy as we are this winter, I am looking ahead
to spring and summer for one-time and ongoing
opportunities for you to get more out of getting involved.

Seena Brielle Ludwig –
Seena Brielle Ludwig, daughter of
David and Rachel Ludwig, and sister
of Joshua and Jacob will be called to
the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah at
Congregation Beth Judah on Saturday,
January 3, 2015, Parsha Vayechi.
Seena attended Jewish Day School
until 2nd grade, and has since been an
honor roll student at the Northfield Community Middle
School. She attends Kulanu High School of Jewish
Studies, and participates on the Northfield Cardinals
Varsity Cheerleading Team. Seena loves Camp Ramah in
the Poconos, where she has been a camper for four years,
and in her spare time she loves to be with friends and
family.

Sarah Isabella Glass –
Sarah Isabella Glass, daughter of
Andrew and Carla Glass and sister to
Daniel and Mary, will become a Bat
Mitzvah on January 24. Sarah is the
granddaughter of Jerry and Zina Glass
of Westbrookville, New York and
Victor and Phyllis Wolitzer of
Brewster, Mass. Sarah is a student at
the Eugene A. Tighe School in Margate. Some of Sarah’s
interests are ice skating, fashion design, video and visual
arts. An accomplished artist, Sarah attended Interlochen
School of Art in Michigan last summer and plans on
pursuing the visual arts. Sarah would like to extend an
invitation to the Congregation to help her celebrate her Bat
Mitzvah.

Jacob Austin Schwartz will be
called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah
on Saturday, February 21,
2015, Parshat Terumah. Tyler is
the son of Kimberly and Joel
Schwartz. He is the grandson
of Sandy and John Hoffman of
Plymouth Meeting, Pa, Sandi and
David Schwartz of Boca Raton, Florida and
the late Jack Wolf. Jacob is a seventh grade student at
the Belhaven School in Linwood. He enjoys hanging out
with friends, all things electronic and playing tennis.

Hazzans Message
Looking out of the window of my
office, a very slight coating of snow had
fallen last night, and I’m wearing extra
layers to keep warm. Fond thoughts turn
back to not that long ago, when I could
wear shorts and sandals. I do enjoy the
changing seasons, as there is much to
appreciate during each of them: the
beauty of nature that is inherent in magnificent sunsets, the vast
wash of colors as the leaves lose their chlorophyll, the quiet
shimmering of a fresh coat of snow, the hummingbird quickly
darting from flower to flower. We can enjoy regular moments of
our daily lives if we are attuned to them, and offer a simple thanks
to God for each of them. How much more should we treasure the
special moments in our lives and those of our family and friends?
There is a finite set of opportunities in our lives that cause us to
celebrate: births, birthdays, B’nai Mitzvah, graduations, weddings.
The cycle continues from one generation to the next, each event
filled with joy and the opportunity to make that time special. As
each one occurs, that is one less in our treasury.
Time is our most precious commodity. It cannot be traded on the
Chicago Mercantile Exchange, but it can be invested wisely in those
people that are really important in our lives, and the wiser the
investment, the better the rate of return. For those who have been
blessed to be parents and grandparents, we hope that God has given
us the wisdom to teach how to effectively invest our time. For most
of us, it is a life-long class in which we are registered, and we watch
our personal Dow Jones to see if our investment grows. It is never
too late to make adjustments to our investment strategies. At the
end, you have to be able to look yourself in the mirror and ask: Did I
use my time wisely?
Rosh Hashanah was approximately three months ago. Perhaps
you can pause for a moment and examine your investment portfolio?
Are the people and events that really matter given sufficient time? Is
there anything I would want to change? The remainder of the year
provides us with opportunities to experiment, so that perhaps, by the
time the next Rosh Hashanah comes, you have devised an investment
strategy that you believe not only works best for you and the ones
that matter to you, but that also provides the best return. The one
question that God may ask you is: Did you use your time wisely?
May we all be blessed to be able to answer: I did my best.

A MESSAGE FROM TODD M. COHEN
My thanks to everyone who attended Shabbat Services on
October 25 my dad’s, Frank Cohen’s, 81st birthday tribute, and on
November 8, the 42nd Anniversary of my Bar Mitzvah and my
55th Birthday. I read Torah and presented a D’var Torah at each of
these services. My participation was dedicated in loving memory
of my wonderful parents, Frank and Annell “Nancy” Cohen. My
thanks to Rabbi Kremer for helping me prepare my D’vrei Torah.
My thanks to Hazzan Myers for teaching me Torah. My thanks to
Nicole Weisman and her catering team and to Ethel Levinson for
making these events a success.

Sisterhood
Men’s Club/Sisterhood Shabbat will be observed on
Saturday, February 28, Shabbat Zakhor. If you would like to
read Torah or chant Haftarah, please contact Hazzan Myers.
A festive Kiddush luncheon will follow services.
Torah Fund cards in support of the Torah Fund Campaign
of Women’s League and the Jewish Theological Seminary
are available for all occasions; Mazel Tov, Get Well,
Sympathy, Birthday, New Baby and Thank you. They can be
purchased in Ethel’s office at $3 each. If you wish to be a
Torah Fund Benefactor ($180), please contact Judy Galler,
823 3873, for your pin.
Our recent Chanukah Bazaar was most successful. “It
takes a Team.” Todah Rabbah to Andrea Weiss, our
Chairperson, and all the volunteers who assisted in setting up
on Saturday evening and those who assisted in organizing
and selling raffle tickets. Special thanks to Ethel Levinson,
Karen McKinney, Nicole Weisman and Derrick Anderson for
their ongoing assistance.

Ventnor Recovery Project
Rene Kane, Chair
The committee is still going strong and working with
people in Ventnor that are still not in their homes or are
having their homes raised. We were able to give a family heat
by providing a boiler prior to the cold weather setting in. A
resident of Ventnor Heights, a senior who is disabled, needed
to have her home raised. She was able to get grants for
everything except the actual move and storage. Living on a
fixed income she would not have been able to do this. It is
such a mitzvah to be able to be there for the smaller items
that those affected by Sandy are not able to take care of. To
be able to be the "yes" they so desperately need to hear, is the
most wonderful feeling and true mitzvah. These grants, the
changes in the grants, the follow up, the paperwork and
redundancy of the paperwork are more than the average
person can bear. When they are able to call us and ask for
help and we can provide it without hassle, we hear their tears
of joy. Next month we are hoping to help another family
move out while their house is raised. Please consider making
a contribution to this fund. Your funds will be matched by
our angel donors 100%. Consider a donation of $36 and you
will be contributing $72 to these needy families. Contribute
$180 and you just gave $360. Any donation is so appreciated.

Men’s Club
Men’s Club is looking forward to participating in Shabbat
services with Sisterhood on Saturday, February 28. We hope
you will be here to share that Shabbat with us.
Thank you to Gary Poetsch for arranging a most successful
Paid Up Membership event at the hockey game at Boardwalk
Hall on Sunday, December 14.
Thank you to Jim Dine for our Burgers and Craft Beer
night. Over 30 people enjoyed our burger dinner and tasted
the large variety of craft beers that were offered. A great deal
was learned that evening about craft beers.
We also thank Jim Dine for arranging our Jews Views and
Brews evening with Rabbi Kremer. It was a most innovative
and enjoyable evening and will definitely be repeated.
If you are a softball player and 40 years of age or older,
please contact me as we are trying to arrange an over 40
Softball Club. If we get enough interest we will pursue this
further. At this writing, I have three men signed up. Call me at
432-4000 and leave a message if I do not answer.

Men’s Club President
Twenty men gathered for "views and brews" on Thursday,
Dec. 18, at Bocca in Margate. Led by Rabbi Kremer, the
discussion ranged from the Hanukkah story (as told in the
Book of Maccabees) to terrorism, to Israel politics and
personal experiences to.... Even before much beer had been
consumed, the group came up with some prospective names
for seasonal brews: Menorah Lite, Maccabrew, Latka Lager,
among others. Special thanks to Jim Dine for initiating and
organizing the event. Another gathering is planned for winter.

Preschool
This year, Beth Judah Preschool has welcomed many new
students.
The children and families are excited about the
curriculum, activities and special care they are given. We
are equally enthusiastic about having them be part of our
Beth Judah Preschool Family.
As Chanukah approaches, the students at Beth Judah
Preschool are preparing for special events happening in and
out of our building.

Chanukah Celebration/open House/Dinner – Family and
Friends Welcome
It’s a wonderful sight to see the children happily learning
about, and creating gifts, keepsakes and projects for the
holiday.
Even better, is walking down our hallways hearing them
sing B’rachot and songs of Chanukah. It puts a smile on our
faces and warms our hearts.
My thanks to our creative, caring staff who continually
enrich our students.
On Tuesday, December 16, 2014, members of the
Congregation Beth Judah Youth Chorale gave a Chanukah
concert at Brandall Estates in Linwood, providing a
wonderfully joyous way for the residents to begin Chanukah.

A Gleaming GALEEM Shabbaton
Games, meals, services,
snacks, discussion, games,
singing, snacks. That was
the basic outline of the
first Shabbaton of
GALEEM (the Beth Judah
religious school) held on
Shabbat Vayyeishev,
December 12-13. Family
Shabbat dinner (thanks to
Chef Nicole!) — with
exuberant singing (thanks
to Hazzan Myers and to
Carly and Sammy,
USYers!) — was followed by a scavenger hunt, games and snacks.
And that was just Friday night. Nine of our students, along with
Ellie and Rabbi Kremer and Chaya Bender, a GALEEM teacher,
slept in the building. A few of them got a good night’s sleep, but all
had lots of fun!

Hanukkah celebration at

with more than 60 children, parents
and grandparents enjoying the
proceedings! Beth Judah’s Preschool
Director Lynne Midelton organized
a dreidle craft project for the
children, Rabbi Kremer read a PJ
Library Hanukkah book, and Hazzan
Myers offered some songs,
including amusing turns on the
classic “I Have a Little Dreidle.”
Chef Nicole prepared a “pasta ‘n’
latka” dinner for all.

Beth Judah Hanukkah Outreach: DeLIGHTSful!!
December saw Galeem (religious school) and Preschool children bring Hanukkah joy to many through lively choral
performances led by Hazzan Myers and Israeli dancing led by Morah Iris Levy. Galeem students performed at Shalom House in
Ventnor (and worked on a Hanukkah craft project with residents) and at Brandall Estates in Linwood. Preschoolers brought their
infectious Hanukkah energy to the monthly Survivor’s Lunch at Jewish Family Services and to an Open House at Beth Judah.
Continuing a multi-year tradition, Beth Judah’s Sisterhood and Men’s Club organized a Hanukkah visit to AtlantiCare
Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City. After lighting the first (electric) candle, the ad hoc mixed chorus, with Rabbi
Kremer on guitar, shared some Hanukkah songs with patients and staff.

FREE PROGRAM! It can’t get any better than this! You don’t have to spend any
extra money to participate. Most of these programs require you to purchase a debit card
from us to use at the store, just like you would use cash or your credit card.
Supermarkets allow you to purchase medications with the card as well as your
groceries. The synagogue receives between 5 and 10 percent of whatever is purchased
by the congregant.
Currently there are over 50 congregation families who have participated, either
regularly or sporatically, in one or more of these programs. Through their efforts, we
have already generated a few thousand extra dollars. If every family unit purchases an
average of $200 each month, we would generate more than $30,000 during the year!
