Home Care: What Are My Options?
To an untrained ear, the terms “home health care” and “non-medical in-home care” can sound awfully similar.
Because it’s easy to mistake one for the other, it is good to understand the differences in terms of when each type
of care may be needed, costs involved and resources available so you can make informed care decisions.
What is Home Health Care?
Home health care refers to skilled medical care provided in the
home by a licensed medical professional, such as a nurse or
physical therapist. Generally, home health professionals are only
authorized to perform the tasks
prescribed by your physician.
When Home Health Care Is Needed?
Here are just a few types of skilled medical home care that fall
under the home health category: Occupational
Therapy, Wound Care, Mobility Training, Pain Management,
IV Therapy/Injections.
Generally Medicare only pays for skilled medical home care
when it is provided by an agency that is certified by Medicare
and ordered by the client’s physician. Specific guidelines must
be met and the home care agencies will be able to describe their
services and limitations. The home care is also usually on a
temporary basis. Under the Home Health Care benefit, Medicare
does not pay for: 24-hour care at home, Meals delivered to your home, Homemaker services, Personal care
(unless assistance with ADLs is provided as part of the HHC plan of care)
How does Non-Medical In-Home Care Differ from Home Health Care?
Non-medical in-home care focuses on helping seniors with the daily activities they need to engage in life and
remain safe and healthy. Family members or professional caregivers who do not have a medical license generally can perform these tasks. The following care tasks are just a few examples of non-medical in-home
care services: Bathing, Transferring, Toileting, Continence, Medication Management, Companionship, Meal
Preparation,, Light Housekeeping and Transportation.
Before hiring an agency to provide services, seniors and their families should know exactly what types of care the
agency’s professionals can provide. If you only need non-medical home care, it is typically private pay and can
range from $10-$30 per hour. Here are some other options you can explore to help pay for non-medical
in-home care:
 Pay for in-home care with public benefit programs. If you have a very low income and few assets other
than the home in which you live, some public benefit programs -- including Medicaid, VA benefits for
veterans, and Wood County Jobs and Family Services – may pay a limited amount for care.
 Pay for in-home care with private insurance. There are at least two options worth looking into: If you have
a long-term care insurance policy, it may include coverage for in-home care. You might also consider converting a life insurance policy into cash to help pay for in-home care.
 Pay for in-home care with personal and family assets. Like most families, you'll probably have to rely on
your loved ones and other family members' personal assets to pay for in-home care costs. There are several
ways personal and family assets can be used to help pay for in-home care, including tapping into the equity in
your home and gathering contributions from those family members who aren't actively
helping with daily care.
For more information on this topic, attend one of the programs “Home Care: What are My Options” throughout the
month of February at each senior center location (see each site’s page for specific date/time).

Endowment Fund
Volunteer Views
Friends of the Wood County Committee on
Aging are reminded that for many years the
Endowment Fund has been the recipient of gifts
to honor and memorialize friends and relatives.
Over the past several years, the generous gifts of
community organizations, families, and
individuals, augmented by money from the
Endowment Fund, were directed to the Kitchen
Project. That success of the project has assured
that the WCCOA will be able to continue to
provide congregate and home delivered meals to
a growing number of older adults in Wood
County. As in the past, WCCOA welcomes gifts
to the Endowment Fund to memorialize family
members and to honor people in the WCCOA
network of volunteers and professionals in the
Wood County Community.
The Heart…one little symbol that carries so much hope.
And it is a sign of the individuals who volunteer for the
Wood County Committee on Aging throughout all of
Wood County! They have heart and are caring individuals. Last November, 2014, an election was held to seat
new Governing Board members. In case you hadn’t
heard, Vickie Askins, Sue Kinder, Willard Misfeldt, and
Tim Nowicki are returning to the Board, while Rick
Barker, Jim Gordon, Thomas Milbrodt, Eric Myers, and
George Stossel are joining the Board for two (2) year
terms. These are some of the individuals who will help
propel this Agency to bigger and better in 2015.

So, what can you do? Each of the seven (7) locations of
our organization has great need for a volunteer team.
These team members can help create and strengthen the
various sites by helping the site managers with setting
up for and/or cleaning up after lunch, setting up for
various programming held at your site, delivering meals,
and a myriad of other things. If you like to do clerical
tasks, how about taking care of the time logs for the
volunteers at your site? Believe it or not, this one little
task is very important to the volunteer program for the
Agency! These hours are needed when writing grants or
even for our insurance! YES…volunteers are important.
As we go to print for this issue of Your County
Connection, we have been working through a rough
period in the Wayne, North Baltimore and Weston areas
with the Home Delivered Meal program. If you have
any neighbors or family members who say they “should
do something with their time,” why not suggest
contacting me to deliver meals? All three (3) of these
locations have sufficient need getting the hot meals that
many of you enjoy at a site out to individuals in these
other areas. How many can find one hour a week free
that will allow you to deliver a hot, nutritious meal to
an individual who not only needs this nourishment to
their body, but a smiling face that shows a caring in our
communities?
