recent recession, though, underscored
the need for Redwood to become
increasingly self-reliant instead of being at
the mercy of economic downturns.
After careful planning and research,
the board determined the path to
self-reliance is through growth of our
endowment program, the Dorothy Wood
Foundation.
Based on results of a Feasibility Study,
Redwood is embarking on the Living
Legacy Endowment Campaign. This name
commemorates our legacy of service and
recognizes our intent to bequeath our
legacy to benefit future generations.

Our hope is that someday we will live in a world without
disabilities. The reality, though, is far different. According
to the American Academy of Pediatrics, one in six children
now have a developmental disability. Medical technology
is saving lives, but leaving some children with chronic,
lifelong health disorders.
Redwood has always responded and shaped its mission
by the careful development of programs to address real
needs and challenges. Early intervention, therapy, and
health programs help children get back on the path of
normal development. For people with lifelong special
needs, Redwood offers a full range of services to develop
skills, increase independence, and enhance quality of life.
As Board and staff leaders look to the future, we
recognize the strategic importance of developing
new revenue streams to reduce our susceptibility to
fluctuations in the economy and subsequent funding
cutbacks. Central to planning is the need to grow
endowment resources.

The first page of this newsletter introduces Living Legacy.
This is the first time we will reach out to loyal supporters
for an endowment-focused campaign.
Gifts to Living Legacy will be kept intact in our
endowment program—the Dorothy Wood Foundation—
while investment income provides a renewable source of
annual support for Redwood. Although Living Legacy will
benefit all programs, it will focus on three critical areas...
Therapeutic Services, Nursing Care, and Adapted Dietary
Programs. As you read the stories on the following pages,
consider how Redwood enriched four lives through
these services. The other 800 people we serve also have
inspiring stories of growth and development.

Making Eating Easy
Therapeutic Feeding Helps Abilities Grow
What is more natural than eating? People
grab a bite on their way out the door each
morning, eat lunch with friends, and catch
up with family members over supper.
They munch on snacks and celebrate
special occasions with food. Eating is easy
and fun, right? Except, when it’s not.
Penny now looks forward to meal time.
Children and adults with cerebral palsy,
traumatic brain injuries, and special
health care needs often find eating to be
anything but easy and fun. Limited ability
to control the head and body, or grasp
a spoon, interferes with self-feeding.
Inefficient chewing and swallowing makes
it hard to get enough food and puts
the person at risk of choking. Children
who have been tube fed may not even
recognize when food is in their mouth or
they may be frightened by the texture or
taste.
When Penny came to Redwood, she
received continuous feeding through
a G-Tube. Two therapists worked with
Penny to improve her feeding skills. The
physical therapist, Debbie Listermann,
put Penny in a supported seating position
using a chair with sides and a lap belt to
support her trunk, a pummel to separate
her legs, and a foot rest to support her
feet. This position helped Penny properly
align the muscles of her head, body, face,
and neck to improve safe swallowing. It
also allowed Penny to be at the table with
other children so she could learn that
food was an enjoyable experience.
At first, Penny cried and gagged when
food was presented. She definitely was
not interested in drinking from a cup.
Penny didn’t want anything in her mouth
or on her lips. To help Penny, Susie
Magnafichi, the occupational therapist
provided a lot of stimulation to reduce
sensitivity in and around her mouth. The
gradual transition from desensitization
to the exploration of pureed food helped
Penny realize that food was not a bad
thing. She quickly progressed to using
a spoon with assistance to feed herself
small amounts.
Penny’s mother, Mary, is pleased with her
progress, “Penny has come a long way.
Now when she sees food, she gets excited
instead of crying. Penny wants to drink
from a regular cup instead of a sippy cup.”
Children who have been
tube fed may not even
recognize when food is in
their mouth.
Where Compassion, Teaching, and Discovery
Come Together
Helping Penny and other children and
adults to eat is one of the most important
things we do at Redwood, as it provides a
good foundation for health and wellness.
Redwood serves breakfast, lunch and
snack to some 400 children and adults
every week. Stop in and have lunch. You
will see that mealtime, while challenging,
is still a pleasant experience. For more
information about Therapeutic Feeding or
Dietary Programs, contact Peggy Farmer,
Director of Therapeutic Intervention or
Pam Millay, Clinical Director.
Jason’s Connections
This innovative online community connects people
experiencing disability and their family/caregivers
to quality resources, support, and each other.
Redwood hosted the first ever Greater Cincinnati
Blog-a-Thon for Jason’s Connection in 2014. To

connections, go to jasonsconnection.org.

Assistive Technology Helps Abilities Grow
Unlimited Access
to Information
Earthquakes, volcanoes, floods, and
other forces that change the earth.
Do you ever wonder how these
natural phenomena shape history?
John does. He wonders about
these things a lot. John is especially
interested in natural disasters that
impacted the people who lived in
biblical times.
Imagine wondering, but having
no way to find out. Now imagine
incredible technology that will allow
you to learn everything there is to
know about earthquakes and other
calamities. Ah, you say...That would
be the Internet. For you, yes. For
John, no.
Exciting new
technology is
opening up a new
world for John.
Using the Internet has been difficult
for John. In fact, using the computer
for anything has always been difficult
for John because he is blind.
Through the introduction of exciting
assistive technology this past year,
a whole new world is now opening
up to John. It all started through the
generosity of the Ettlinger Trust Fund
4
John puts the new Braille keyboard and the new printer to good use.
and Toyota Motor Engineering and
Manufacturing North America, Inc.
They funded a Braille printer and
Braille labeler.
John put this equipment to good
use. He summarized audio book
information into written notes with a
Braille keyboard and the new printer.
He produced Braille-label signs.
Schools, employers, and community
organizations wishing to enhance
accessibility can now contact John to
make Braille labels for their elevators,
restrooms, and vending machines.
One barrier John experienced was
the age old problem of typographical
errors. He could not see them.
John also needed help with opening
programs and documents. To address
these stumbling blocks, Redwood
purchased JAWS screen reader. This
assistive technology provides speech
and Braille output for computer users
who cannot see screen content or
navigate with a mouse. John loves it.
With guidance from his assistive
technology professional, John is
exploring JAWS tutorials. Lisa states,
“I want John to be comfortable
enough with this technology that he
can be independent. He can already
start JAWS with hotkey shortcuts,
use arrow keys to navigate icons on
the Desktop, and open and close
documents.”
While a job is in John’s future dreams,
right now he is enamored with the
possibilities of unlimited access to
information. “There are going to
be so many things I will be able to
do on my own. I can’t wait,” he
says with a big smile. To find out
more about assistive technology
available at Redwood, contact Lisa
Staub, Coordinator of the Assistive
Technology Resource Center.
“There are going
to be so many things
I will be able to do
on my own. I can’t
wait.”

From the Chief
Development Officer
I am honored and excited to be a part of the Redwood
community. Over the past few months, I have had the
privilege to meet and work with the board and committee
members, donors, and staff who make this organization
so vibrant and strong. From the first moment I entered
Julie Althaver
Redwood’s door, I felt a deep connection and passion to
Chief Development Officer
this organization.
Through this newsletter, Redwood communicates the wonderful good works
happening in our programs and services. Just as importantly, we trumpet
the tremendous outcomes that emerge when donors, staff, board members,
and families work in unison to advance, experience, and rejoice in our clients’
achievements.
Oliver Wendell Holmes once said, “The greatest thing in this world is not so much
where we are, but in what direction we are moving.” Direction… a course one
follows when desires and goals come together to form positive impacts. What
an impact you, our wonderful, supportive, and committed donors have made for
Redwood across our 62 year history! Your support allowed us to improve, change,
and grow services to meet the ever changing needs of children and adults with
special needs. Last year alone, over 800 clients benefited from direct services. This
would not be possible without you.
Thank you for your continued commitment to Redwood. Thank you for your time,
talent, and treasure. Thank you for stepping forward in these times of economic
uncertainty to partner with us in the mission of guiding children and adults to reach
their highest potential. Thank you for investing in our direction, a direction that
keeps evolving in many wonderful, miraculous ways.

Making Sense of a Complicated World
Therapy Helps Abilities Grow
Subcontracts
Needed
We move, see, hear, touch, and taste... bombarding our brain with a constant
stream of input. Amazingly, the brain makes sense of this allowing us to explore
and learn, perform everyday tasks, create, and accomplish.
Adults acquire work and life
skills through completion of
subcontract work in Vocational
Day Training. Production
services include:
For most of us, the process of mastering the
use of our bodies, senses, and brain begins at
birth and continues at a rapid pace throughout
childhood. Some children, though, experience
significant roadblocks in their development.
They have trouble making sense of our
complicated world.
Drew works on the swing with Amy.
Leslie and Zachary have three little boys
with Fragile X Syndrome. This single-gene
disorder results in developmental delays and
is the most common known genetic cause
of autism spectrum disorders. Children with
Fragile X often have difficulties processing
sensory information which leads to delays in
communication and socialization skills. Therapy
is the mainstay of treatment.
Leslie shares, “When we received Drew’s diagnosis we were truly apprehensive
about his future. With the therapy he receives at Redwood, our hopes for his
future have brightened. He has been in speech and occupational therapy for over
two years and shows continued improvement with each session. Drew’s face just
lights up when we pull in the parking lot!”
Our therapists’ faces light up too! They love helping Drew (and his brothers)
learn and grow. Drew is now saying words, naming storybook characters, and
requesting “more” as he uses a communication iPad app and explores his favorite
stories in speech therapy. He is now following simple directions. Drew is also
showing improved sensory processing through therapeutic swinging, deep pressure
stimulation, and other sensory motor activities in occupational therapy.
Leslie in thrilled with her son’s progress, “Drew’s therapists and the staff are
amazing, true professionals in every sense and so compassionate in what they do.
We continue to be grateful that our therapists have helped Drew to find his ‘voice.’”
Over 375 people each year benefit from
direct therapy, consultation, seating
and mobility services, technologybased treatments, assistive technology
intervention, and other therapeutic
services at Redwood. To learn more,

Therapeutic Intervention.

Nursing Care Helps Abilities Grow
Stabilizing Health
Nursing is a noble profession. Nowhere
is that more evident than at Redwood
where 41% of the people who use
our services have special health care
needs. Many of their conditions are life
threatening and require daily nursing
care.
Redwood is fortunate to have a caring,
competent, and committed nursing
team. They follow detailed nursing
regimens and respond quickly to medical
emergencies. Whether soothing a
child, guiding an adult, or listening to
a parent, they are patient, calm, and
compassionate. They also like to have
fun.
Richard spends a lot of time with the
nurses. He has a great sense of humor.
The nurses banter back and forth with
Richard as he receives food and water
through a g-tube, oral suctioning,
medication, catheterization, Healing
Touch, and full assistance with arm and
leg braces.
Richard and Cheryl share a joke as Richard receives lunch.
Richard banters well—giving as good as
he gets—even though he is nonverbal.
Richard communicates through facial
expression and eye movements (up for
yes and blink for no). As a result, the
nurses know that Richard loves jokes,
funny t-shirts, his baby niece, audio
books, and science fiction. He loves
sports, especially football, but not the
Bengals. Richard is competitive and likes
to bet. He always races another adult to
see who finishes a tube feed first; and
laughs jubilantly when the nurses sing
“We are the Champions” to the winner.
One nurse, Cheryl, shakes her head with
wonder... “You know, you almost forget
that Richard doesn’t talk because he is so
expressive!” Mom agrees, “Richard gets
his point across.”
Richard always has a smile.
Richard has been involved with Redwood
for a long time. He attended summer
camp until he graduated from high school,
and then enrolled in Adult Day Health
Care, first in the Young Adult Program
and now in Life Skills I. The availability
of daily nursing care made it possible for
Richard to participate in these programs
by stabilizing his health.
Mom says, “I feel totally comfortable with
the nurses at Redwood. I trust them with
Richard’s care.”

Children Services
Early childhood education is important for every child—with and without special
needs. Julia Hester, preschool teacher, puts her training in Interdisciplinary Early
Childhood Education to excellent use for preschool children in Early Care & Education
and Prescribed Pediatric Extended Day.
A visit to her classrooms would show children eagerly learning about hibernation,
migration and adaptation (science); writing letters to a marine (critical thinking);
making and using life-sized cardboard trains (cognitive/language/motor); exploring
animals around the world (zoology and geography); and discovering holiday traditions
(culture). Julia weaves literacy and math into all activities, and incorporates real
world vocabulary into learning themes, such as “making hypotheses” during science
experiments. To best guide intellectual, physical, and social/emotional growth, she
individualizes lessons for each child.
When asked what topic children liked best, Julia immediately said, “Apple volcanoes”
and added that “receiving a postcard from the marine sparked interest in learning
about life on a submarine.”
Adult Services
One of the favorite parts of a Redwood tour is a visit to Computer Life Skills (CLS).
Everyone is amazed to see adults using adapted keyboards, alternative mouse access,
switch-activated scanning tools, and other technology to explore special-interest
topics on the computer.
Thanks to Maryrose Duber—adult special educator/activity coordinator—folks in
CLS are developing new areas of interests. When she introduced “World Travels”
with France as the first destination, they created passports and researched tourist
attractions. As a result, adults across Redwood experienced the magic of Paris. When
Maryrose incorporated line dancing into the exercise program, one man created a
Cupid Shuffle PowerPoint. That was fun and reinforced directional concepts. When
she wanted to teach “jobs in our community,” the guys in CLS eagerly researched and
created Power Point programs for this purpose. Maryrose’s passion for learning and
teaching is catching fire in adult programs... especially in CLS.
Innovative Therapy
Children learn by watching others. It almost seems as if they pick up new skills and
behaviors by osmosis. Children with certain disabilities find it more difficult to notice
the small steps that make up everyday tasks such as brushing teeth or tying shoes.
Even more complicated is picking up on the social cues that guide interactions with
others. This requires observing, processing the perceived thoughts, emotions, and
intentions of others, and responding accordingly.
At Redwood, children discover hidden social cues or task sequences through the
evidence-based practice of video modeling. How it works is that children watch a
video of other children role playing a social interaction or performing a task of daily
living. The video is just as fast as real life, but the difference is in the pause button.
Therapists can pause the video to help children see, imitate, and learn. Amy Kinsler
uses this technique with children during occupational therapy with great results!
