Throughout Black History Month we will have a little contest to test your knowledge. Twice a
week, we will read a question related to an important person, organization or event that has
contributed to our country’s history. Please write your answer on a piece of scrap paper and
turn it in to Mr. Sharkey before or during lunch. We will draw three names from all of the
correct answers, and announce the names of the three “winners” tomorrow. Those three
students can stop by the Main Office for a surprise!
Yesterday’s Question: What is the name of the first commercially successful blackowned record company, when was it founded, and by whom?
Motown is an American record company. It was founded by Berry Gordy, Jr. on January
12, 1959, in Detroit, Michigan and was incorporated as "Motown Record Corporation"
on April 14, 1960. The name, a blending of motor and town, is also a nickname for
Detroit. Motown played an important role in the racial integration of popular music as
an African American-owned record label which achieved significant crossover success.
Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and Queen Latifah all got their starts on Motown
Records.
Popcorn and a Book has been cancelled for this week. We will let you know when it will be
rescheduled.
Stop by the office for your free ticket to cheer on the St. Louis Billiken's Women's Basketball

The Cinderella Project is an awesome organization that collects gently used prom and dance
dresses for girls who aren't able to afford one on their own. The girls are recommended to The
Cinderella Project by their high school counselors. Once recommended they are able to go to
the boutique set up by The Cinderella Project and pick out a beautiful dress and accessories for
their big day. To date Rockwood has come together and donated over 430 dresses. Dresses
will be collected until Feb 26th. Thanks for helping make girls dreams come true!!
Happy Birthday today to: Violet Hainz and Ashley Shore
Please remember to stop by the office for a birthday surprise!

-William Shakespeare
At this time, we ask that all students and staff stand for our Pledge of Allegiance.
Pledge of Allegiance
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it
stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
HAVE A THANKFUL THURSDAY!
