The Shell St. James’ Parish Newsletter Our Vision at St. James’ Parish is to build a lasting Christian community that honors our Episcopal heritage, enhances the spiritual lives of our members through parish ministries, nurtures Christian fellowship among youth and adults, and puts faith into action, serving the whole community through outreach. Our Mission is to meet the diverse and changing needs of our parishioners and community through worship, music, Christian formation, pastoral care, fellowship, and outreach. MARCH 2015 3rd Annual Lenten-Easter Messiah Sing-Along ▫ March 22nd The third Community sing-along of Handel’s great oratorio, “the Messiah, “ will be held March 22nd, at 4 p.m., in historic St. James’ Church, 5757 Solomons Island Rd., Lothian, MD. Led by St. James’ Parish Music Director Michael S. Ryan and accompanied by concert pianist Beverly Babcock, a walk-in chorus will sing without rehearsal all of the choruses in parts two and three. Soloists will include Laurie Hays, soprano; Robin Henshaw, alto; David Merrill, tenor and Alvy Powell, bass. The Easter Sing-Along grew out of the popular Advent and Christmas sing-along that has for 28 years attracted as many as 250 people. The setting inspires the singing because of the beauty and intensity of the sound created by the voices under the concave hand-plastered ceiling of the Colonial building. The church was completed in 1765 just 20 years after the “Messiah” was composed. The oratorio was gaining popularity in Europe as the Colonists dabbled in politics, and worked their tobacco farms and oyster boats. Singers and listeners are asked to bring a snack or a dessert to share at the light reception hosted by the Women of St. James’ Parish. Some scores are available to buy ($10) or borrow. A free will offering will benefit the St. James’ Parish Community Assistance Fund. In addition, we gave $500 to the SCCEAG Fund at Johnson Oil and were able to fill the fuel tanks of two additional families. Most of the people needed help with lot rent, electric and fuel bills. In addition, we helped a homeless family with three children stay in an Annapolis motel for four nights, and in an unusual situation, we were able to help a family get back on their feet by assisting with an extremely necessary dental procedure. We feel blessed to be able to help our neighbors in need and appreciate your support. — The Community Assistance Team Please remember that the plate offering on the 1st Sunday of every month is earmarked for the Community Assistance Fund. Thank you for your generous support! Did You Know ? … why the symbol for St. James is a sword piercing a scallop shell? St. James “the Greater” or “the Great”, the brother of St. John, was the first of the Apostles to be martyred and suffered death by the sword. He the only Apostle whose death is recorded in the New Testament (Acts 12:1). The scallop shell represents his many travels, and years ago pilgrims carried large scallop shells for cooking and drinking. The St. James’ Parish banner also includes a pilgrim’s staff and hat. St. James’ Parish Communication & Transparency Policy It is the objective of the Vestry of St. James’ Parish to continue and encourage transparency and communication regarding all parish governing and financial decisions, as well as the many projects and programs coordinated by the Parish committees and ministries. Truly, your support has helped to provide the financial resources that enable our Church to continue to reach out, care for, and touch so many lives, both within our Parish family and within our community. I do not know the amount of your pledge/support, but I do know that every contribution by every parishioner to further God’s work in this Parish is essential and needed and helps ensure that our important ministries can continue and grow. For those of you who have formally pledged and have made a financial commitment/pledge for 2015, the Vestry thanks you for providing helpful information for planning our resources during the coming year. Pledges are needed so that we can balance our budget, appropriately plan for the year, and continue doing the work God has called us to do. It is not too late to make a financial pledge for 2015 as they are always welcomed and accepted throughout the year. Please know that our valued programs run on tight budgets and your donations, in whatever form, allow our ministries to continue to flourish and grow. Again, thank you for what you do for St. James’ Parish, and I encourage you to keep our Parish in prayer and to ask the Lord how you can serve Him through our many parish ministries. May you and your family be abundantly blessed throughout this year and always. — The Rev. William H. C. Thanks For Your Support! 9 Christian Formation at St. James’ Parish ATRIUM is the name chosen to represent a unique religious program for children from 3 to 12 years of age. The word is used to define a sacred, prepared space that allows the children to come closer to God. The word “Atria” is used to set it apart from the secular word “classroom.” The adult leader is referred to as a “Catechist” and is the one who shares in the experience of Christ’s presence. The course of study, activities, and special notes for the Atriums will be posted outside of each classroom. Parents are encouraged to take note so they can discuss with their children the information that has been shared. Please understand that the children may need or desire more time on a particular topic causing the schedule to be periodically adjusted. Please feel free to speak with one of the Atrium leaders or contact Sharon McGlaughlin at 410-991-6041 or [email protected] if you have any questions or would like more information about the program. During the month of MARCH Atrium 1 (ages 3 to 6 years) will continue to emphasize the season of Lent; explore the Eucharistic presence – that Jesus is present in the bread and wine of communion; work with the replica of Jerusalem; following Jesus from Palm Sunday, to the Last Supper, to Gethsemane, arrest, trial with Pilate, and crucifixion. — Julie Cornellier Atrium 2 (ages 6 to 9 years) will be presented the Found Coin and Insistent Friend as well as the Passion Readings. — Sharon McGlaughlin Atrium 3 (ages 9 to 11 years) will be studying the Moral Parables which include The Workers and The Talents. The children will be introduced to the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We will also work on Meditations. — Sharon McGlaughlin NOTE: We are exploring the Lenten practice of ‘giving up’ something that is a sacrifice. The children are encouraged to identify something they can “give up” during Lent. Jesus sacrificed himself by being fully human and took up our sins so that we could be forgiven in his Divinity. If you engage a substitute, please call to remind him or her of the commitment. Altar Guild Volunteers Needed Volunteers, women and men, are needed to help with Altar Guild. Even if you regularly attend the 9 a.m. service, perhaps you would be willing to serve a month at 11 a.m. We desperately need help for March, April, May, September, and October. Altar Guild sets up the silver, wine, and wafers for the service. We fill the candles. You would not need to clean linens. Each month we have two people assigned to the 9 a.m. service and two to the 11 a.m. service. Unfortunately, we have months with no 11 a.m. help at all. Training is provided; you would not be on your own. For more information, or if you are interested, please speak to the clergy or contact Paula Davis at 301-793-8665. 13 Let us pray for all those who are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness or any other adversity.
