A MESSAGE FROM THE VICE-PRESIDENT
As most of you probably are aware, this coming July 2015 is the Annual General Meeting and
election month at Probus. Even though the July AGM and yearly elections are still six months
away, we must begin now, in February, to put together a slate of candidates to fill the upcoming
vacant positions on the Management Committee.
It is not unusual for clubs, especially seniors' clubs and organizations of our type to experience
difficulty finding individuals willing to take on leadership roles. That is quite understandable.
Those who have spent a lifetime shouldering responsibilities in education, business, public service,
and raising a family, now just want to enjoy the speakers, trips, social get-togethers and other
amenities provided by the club.
However, the cold hard truth is that, if we cannot find a slate of candidates to take on leadership
roles for the upcoming term, there won't be a Probus Club. That's right -- unless we can fill these
management positions, our club likely will have to fold. Our constitution stipulates that a serving
officer can hold office for only one consecutive term. New candidates must be found, duly elected,
and installed if the club is to continue.
However the good news is that, once a candidate has been inaugurated, the duties (depending on the
position) will prove to be very light -- at the most not more than a couple of meetings, or just a few
hours per month.
There are the social aspects as well: after every management meeting the committee gets together
over coffee and refreshments in an informal atmosphere for a friendly chat. It's a great way to get to
know people you otherwise might not have had an opportunity to become acquainted with.

The Management Committee and three Past Presidents of the club discussed and
reviewed the above chart that compares our present meeting place with two other
possible meeting places. There may also be information on other sites, not represented
in this chart that will be shared at the February 19th meeting.
Sandra Forest will be presenting this chart and the background information for all
members to discuss at the February 19th meeting and then she will be calling for a
members vote on the hall at the March 19th meeting. There will also need to be a
discussion and vote on March 19th with all the membership concerning the financial
implications of increasing membership fees to cover any future costs.
So review the above chart and come to the February 19th meeting with your thoughts
and suggestions on helping all of us come to a decision on these topics for the best
interest of the club and all of our members.
The Management Committee would like to thank the three Past Presidents for their
involvement with these issues and helping to develop solutions for all our members to
decide.

Mark Fisher, with the Barrie Historical Society presented
“Creeks of Barrie”
Mark gave an informative talk about some of the creeks many of us didn’t know
existed within the City of Barrie. A good amount of information was especially
focussed on Kidd’s Creek, which exists around Cundles, Hwy 400, and Sunnidale
Road. Mark is constantly patrolling these creeks and asking that the City of Barrie
fix the runoff waters that not only flood these areas, affecting the trout and the
structure of the creeks, but also flows into Kempenfelt Bay. This impacts Barrie’s
drinking water as 50% comes from the bay. Please note that all new housing
projects attend to the very important headwaters of these creeks. Barrie needs to
fix the headwater problems that date back to the 1970’s and 1980’s.

February 19, 2015
The speaker for February 19th will be Peter Sundborg from the Barrie Food Bank. We are asking
members to bring a non-perishable food contribution to the meeting.
March 19, 2015
March has been designated as National PROBUS Month. No guest speaker this month. Coffee and
treats will be served.

Words from the Membership Chair
I am investigating means to recognize 5, 10
and 15 year memberships. Probus Central
offers pins, which members can purchase for
about $6s each. They are like the small lapel
pins, consisting of the Probus logo with small
lettering *x years" below. The pins are about
1/2 inch diameter.
Other Probus clubs have their members attach
these pins to their name badge but that may be
a problem with magnetic badges which tend
to drop off if you put extra weight on
them. Another possibility is to stick a small
decal on the name badge but there is not much
spare room on badges with long names.

Waldorf-Astoria Red Velvet Cake
Ingredients:











1/2 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
2 ounces red food coloring
2 tablespoons cocoa (heaping)
1 cup buttermilk
2 1/4 cups cake flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon vinegar
FROSTING





3 tablespoons flour
1 cup milk
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup butter (must be butter)
Directions:

Cream shortening, sugar and eggs.
Make a paste of food coloring and cocoa.
Add to creamed mixture.
Add buttermilk alternating with flour and salt.
Add vanilla.
Add soda to vinegar, and blend into the batter.
Pour into 3 or 4 greased and floured 8" cake pans.
Bake at 350°F for 24-30 minutes.
Split layers fill and frost with the following frosting.
Frosting: Add milk to flour slowly, avoiding lumps.
Cook flour and milk until very thick, stirring constantly.
Cool completely.
Cream sugar, butter and vanilla until fluffy.
Add to cooked mixture.
Beat, high speed, until very fluffy.
Looks and tastes like whipped cream.
