After a successful Inter Probus lunch we come to the excitement? of our A.G.M. I hope
our aim is to keep it short and sweet meaning we should have time for any member's
small contribution/anecdotes etc. We are still needing volunteers!
I would like to take this last opportunity to give my thanks to everyone for what I believe
has been a successful if quiet year and to wish the next committee all the very best.
Tony.

InterProbus (Continued)
Terry Oliver, Chairman of Mid Sussex Probus Club, moved the vote of thanks at the
end of Neil’s talk, which had been most entertaining and well up to standard. Michael
Harper then asked David Hughes, President of Burgess Hill and District Probus Club to
bring the meeting to a close, which he did by announcing that his Club would organise
the next InterProbus Meeting in 2 years’ time.
The InterProbus Lunch followed the
familiar format, with a welcome from
Michael Harper, President of Haywards
Heath & District Probus Club. Grace was
then said by his Vice President, Richard
French. After the meal, the Loyal Toast
was proposed by Michael and he
introduced the Speaker, Neil Sadler,
who had retired from Sussex Police in
2008. His number had been 006, the cause of some merriment, and this has been
taken over by his younger daughter who now serves in Sussex Police.
From the time that Neil joined the Police in 1978 there have been many changes. The
uniform is much different from what it was then, the equipment has changed
considerably, the old wooden truncheon has been replaced with an expanding baton,
radios and mobile phones are now universal, a pepper spray is carried and a gilet is
worn which will stop a knife, but not a bullet. What has not changed is the handcuffs,
locked with a key. Some officers carry a Taser stun gun, first used at Gatwick in 2009.
There is also the Police Helicopter, fitted with a spotlight and infra-red seeking
equipment, very useful when looking for missing persons. That took Neil to a
discussion of missing persons, ranging from the Babes in the Arundel Woods,
Madeleine McCann, the “Canoeman” and Lord Lucan. The helicopter could have
discovered the little girl who had wandered off, and survived for 2 nights in the woods,
much more quickly. She was Elizabeth Peck and was very lucky. At the 2011 Census
there were 56 million people in England and Wales, and there are 17,000 policemen,
which works out at 1 per 420 people. Because policing is a 24 hour per day job, only a
small proportion can be on duty at any one time. Observations by people like Postmen,
Milkmen, Bakers, etc. can be a valuable source of information.
