Sharma vows to raise
Nepali inclusion in WBCS
HM Report
Darjeeling, Feb 17: It had
been overlooked since years
but eyes seems to have
opened up as the Kurseong
MLA Dr. Rohit Sharma is all
set to raise the issue of inclusion of Nepali language in
the West Bengal Civil Services (WBCS) examination. Not
only that the MLA, who is
also an eminent educationist in the hills has also promised to raise the issue of inclusion of a bureaucrat from
the hills in Public Service
Commission (PSC) selection
committee.
Aspirants from the hills
appear in the WBCS examinations every year in ample
numbers and those who qualify for the mains after getting
through preliminary examinations ultimately has to appear with subject which is not
their mother tongue. Candidates appearing from the
same examination from
across the state elsewhere
however have the option for
Bengali as one of the subjects. The WBCS is conduct-
ed by the West Bengal Public Service Commission with
its office only in Kolkata, the
state capital.
Speaking to a section of
media Sharma described the
issue as ‘most pertinent’ and
was overlooked since years.
The issue however came to
light recently after a section
of outraged students in the
hills raised the issue along
with the Gorkha students at
Jawaharlal Nehru University.
"It is outrageous, and
shocking that everyone had
overlooked this issue... not
just the politicians, but even
the examinees had never
bothered to raise this issue...
now that it is out in the open,
we will make sure that Nepali
will be included in WBCS
examinations as early as procedurally possible," Sharma
was quoted as saying by a
facebook page. “The people
should to be a little bit more
patient as the whole process
will take some time,” he added assuring that if not for this
year, Nepali will be definitely included as an Optional
Paper in the WBCS exami-
nations to be held in 2016.
Sharma has already
raised the issue of inclusion
of bureaucrat from the hills
in Public Service Commission (PSC) selection committee with the West Bengal Public Service Commission Secretary demanding
immediate action. “The PSC
Secretary has in turn promised to expedite the matter,”
he said.
Sharma has targeted the
coming budget session to
speak on the issue. , "I am
not sure if I will be given
time to speak to the Legislative Assembly during the
budget session, as that is
reserved only for questions
relating to budget issues,
but if I am given some time
I will raise these issues in
the Assembly, and if not,
then I will follow up on these
issues and see that all the
three issues you have
raised are resolved to the
satisfaction of our hill students," he said.
Asked about Mukul, 31 swine flu cases in Kolkata
Mamata loses cool
Kolkata, Feb 17: As many as
four fresh cases of swine flu
were detected here in the last
two days, a West Bengal
health department official
said Tuesday. However,
there have been no fresh
deaths. As many as 31 people have been afflicted with
influenza, with two deaths
recorded in Kolkata so far.
”The total cases are 31 till
Monday. No additional
deaths were reported. The
state is stocked with the required drugs and the situation is under control,” State
Health Secretary Moloy Dey
told IANS.
Tests were being conducted at the National Institute of Cholera and Enteric
Diseases (NICED) facility in
Beleghata. The official said
oseltemavir tablets and
masks are in stock. Hospitals
and medical colleges have
been asked to remain extremely watchful. Swine flu
Kolkata, Feb 17: Amid reports of Trinamool Congress national general secretary Mukul Roy planning
to split the party, a visibly
irritated West Bengal Chief
Minister Mamata Banerjee
Monday refused to give a
direct reply to a poser concerning her one-time second-in-command and directed a media person to put
the question to her party's
block level presidents instead.
Banerjee, till then in a
good mood as she was interacting with the media after Trinamool's impressive
showing in the by-polls in
the state, got angry when a
reporter sought her comments on the perception
that the Bharatiya Janata
Party was pitting Roy
against her.
"I think you shouldn't
ask me this question. You
should not ask me this question. You ask my block presidents. They will give you
the reply. There are so
many," said the Trinamool
supremo.
Rubbishing any talk of
a split and internal bickering in the Trinamool, Banerjee said: "We are the
number one strong party
not only in India but in the
world. No one can divide
Trinamool.
"If any individual gives
his opinion, they have the
prerogative. But the party
remains strong and united
and this is our collective
family."
Roy, a former railway
minister, has seemingly fallen out with Banerjee after
his interrogation by the
Central Bureau of Investigation in connection with
the multi-crore rupee Saradha ponzi scam.
A founding member of
the Trinamool, he has distanced himself from the party and shied away from attacking the BJP over the
past few weeks. Credited as
the architect of Trinamool's
stunning electoral victories
in recent years, he played a
minor role in Friday's bypoll to Bongaon Lok Sabha
and Krishnaganj assembly
constituencies.
Two days back, Banerjee
effected a series of organisational reshuffles in what
is being termed as a move
to clip Roy's wings. Banerjee had also questioned
Roy's absence from a
closed door meeting and
complained that he was not
carrying out his duties or
responding to her summons.
Meanwhile, replaying to
queries from scribes, Roy iterated that the BJP was
emerging as the principal
opposition force in the
state. The BJP had substantially increased its vote percentage in both Bongaon
and Krishnaganj, and even
finished runner-up in the
latter. (IANS)

people across India this year,
the union health ministry
said.
During the period Jan 1
to Feb 10, the total number
of H1N1 cases was 5,157.

Dalai Lama, a citizen
of world, undeterred
by protests
Dharamsala, Feb 17: Globetrotting elderly monk the
Dalai Lama, who is revered
as a spiritual leader in the
Orient and the West, considers himself a citizen of
the world. He loves to interact with the public, especially youth, despite encountering protests.
Wearing his trademark
maroon robes, the Nobel
Peace Laureate explains
that the protesters are exercising their freedom of expression.
"Yes, there are people
out there shouting at me.
They are exercising their
freedom of expression," he
explained to his followers
in Basel, Switzerland, about
the protest by the proShugden group, a breakaway Buddhist group, outside his hotel.
The Dalai Lama returned
to India Feb 14 after con-
cluding his two-weeklong tour of Denmark,
Norway, Switzerland
and the US.
Feeling sorry for the
demonstrations by proShugden supporters
against him in Copenhagen last week, the
Dalai Lama said they
were misinformed.
"Some may come
because they feel the
Dalai Lama has some
kind of miraculous power.
That's nonsense! Some
people may feel the Dalai
Lama has some kind of healing power. But if there are
some real 100 percent guaranteed healers here, I'd like
to show them my knee. It
has been giving me problems!" said a post on his
website.
Officials of the Dalai Lama's office, which is based
here, say the spiritual guru
visits places only on invitation. These include invitations for various religious, social and cultural
events.
This summer, the Dalai
Lama, 79, is all set to take
off for Japan and Australia
for his teachings and public talks.
Before flying abroad, the
spiritual leader will give a
short teaching in his abode
Dharamsala March 5.

memories connected with
him which were experienced by them earlier in
Darjeeling hills and in Nepal. He said that earlier instead of ‘Gorkha’ Subash

murdered. “The murder of
late Madan Tamang had not
been planned in Darjeeling
hills instead the conspiracy
was plotted in Kolkata. The
state government endorsed
fear pyscosis on the late Subash Ghisingh through the intelligence departments so as
to oust him from power and
Darjeeling Hills.
Thus in a way the state
government although not
assassinating him directly
has done so indirectly by
successfully chasing him
out of Darjeeling as he was
for sixth schedule which was
a stepping stone to the formation of Gorkhaland in later
years,” he added.
He also said that he was
personally ready to provide
all the documents and other
aids to the GNLF party in
support of the sixth schedule status for Darjeeling hills.
