Today’s readings are a nice shorthand catechism of what our baptized lives mean. As Noah passed through the waters of the flood to a covenant with God, so did we enter into a covenant, a promised relationship with God through our baptism. The psalm reminds us that if we truly keep the covenant, the way of life God expects us to follow will not be a burden, but a source of love and truth. Peter’s letter gives one explanation of what our baptism means: it is an appeal that we make to God for a clear conscience. How do we obtain this clear conscience? The words that Jesus proclaims immediately following his temptation show us the way: “Repent and believe in the gospel.” It might be a good spiritual exercise to keep these readings before us throughout the entire season of Lent, a means to help us return to a life lived in our baptismal promises. . February 22, 2015 Pastors Comments THOUGHS ON THE READINGS: The essence of Jesus's ministry is found in Mark 1:15, the proclamation of God’s Kingdom. To ready himself to be faithful to this mission, Jesus spends forty days in the desert, opening himself to be tested. Mark uses the word tested in the scriptural sense that God tested just people. If you would so please read Wisdom 2:12-20 and 5:1-23 to gain more insight into this idea of God testing just people. LENTEN THOUGHTS: “By the solemn forty days of Lent the Church unites herself each year to the mystery of Jesus in the desert” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 540). By his willingness to be led by the Holy Spirit, Jesus remained faithful to his relationship with God the Father, in spite of the devil’s cunning. The Church in her wisdom has created Lent as a time for us to focus on our relationship with God and on our need to remain faithful to God in our present circumstances. The Church has developed many Lenten practices to help us enhance our relationship with God. For example, some people might wish to incorporate spiritual exercises, such as spiritual reading or Saint Ignatius’s exercises, into their daily prayer routine. Others may wish to focus on voluntary self-denial, such as fasting and almsgiving. Ash Wednesday began a few days ago, and the season of Lent will last for forty days, paralleling Jesus’s time in the desert. We use this time to prepare for the significant events of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday. On Good Friday, Jesus was crucified. Three days later, on Easter Sunday, he was resurrected. These events are central to understanding the redemptive meaning of Jesus’s life, death, and Resurrection. Through Jesus’s death on the cross, all humanity receives salvation. And Jesus’s Resurrection demonstrates that he truly is the Son of God, who has conquered death once and for all. Jesus’s temptation reveals the way in which the Son of God is Messiah, contrary to the way Satan proposes to him and the way men wish to attribute to him.1 This is why Christ vanquished the Tempter for us: “For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sinning.”2 By the solemn forty days of Lent the Church unites herself each year to the mystery of Jesus in the desert. (Catechism, paragraph 540) To prepare ourselves for this kairos moment (meaning “the right time”), we spend forty days properly preparing ourselves to enter more fully into the Paschal mystery that we celebrate and share during the liturgies of Holy Week and the Easter season. So, I encourage you to make take this time to prepare your heart and mind for the coming of the Lord this Lenten season. PRAYER ON THE LORD’S SUFFERINGS: Lord my God, I your servant, never cease to thank you and rightly, because for my sake, guilty as I am, you have borne the blows of hands that beat you, the bondage, the strips and spitting, the mockery and trumped –up evidence, through these sufferings, I humbly ask that you rescue me from the scourge and shackles of my enemies, by the fire of your love, and by the spit you let land on your face, cleanse me of all my sins and crimes, and grant me holiness, O Lord Jesus Christ. Amen Peace, Fr.
