It works! They repent before Jonah makes his way through a third of the city, and God sees “by their actions” how they have turned from evil. Then we hear Paul telling the Corinthians that “the world in its present form is passing away.” He calls for a change of heart. He stops short of telling them to set aside their everyday lives, but still he urges them—rather mysteriously—to live as though they aren’t doing the things they’re doing. Finally, Jesus stands on the shore and cries, “The kingdom of God is at hand!” The apostles-to-be abandon their nets and follow him. Thus in all the readings we hear an invitation to a radical and immediate change in our lives. . Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Psalm — Teach me your ways, O Lord (Psalm 25). Second Reading — The world in its present form is passing away (1 Corinthians 7:29-31). Gospel — Jesus proclaims, “Repent, and believe in the gospel.” The new disciples abandon their nets and follow him (Mark 1:1420). January 25, 2015 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION As a result of the reforms of the Second Vatican Council, the Church has defined a new pastoral plan for your care whenever you struggle with illness. There are rites for children, a communal rite for celebration in the parish, forms of care for the sick at each stage and transition, and for the desperately ill. There is a much broader interpretation of who may be anointed, including not only the visibly ill, but those battling addiction, or the elderly coping with the frustrating aches and pains of aging. Children under seven are normally not anointed, since the oil is associated with reconciliation. (For the same reason, they do not receive ashes on Ash Wednesday.) However, children close to that age who have a serious illness often gain a deep level of spiritual insight and maturity, and may benefit from catechesis for the Eucharist. Once admitted to confirmation and/or Eucharist, a sick child should be anointed. It is a great strength of our present rite that a section is included with prayers tailored to the experience and understanding of a child. Considering our recent history of being fairly sparing with this sacrament, the generosity of celebration today is helping us to retrieve an essential part of our tradition of reverence for the sick. Parish Council Elections 2014- There is one opening on the Parish Council. Thank you to Joey Smith for his leadership over the past 3 years. January 24th and 25th- Biographies for candidates published January 31st & February 1st- Parish Council Election “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Called by Jesus to “come after me,” Simon and his brother Andrew abandoned their nets and followed him. That is to say they gave their lives to him. Jesus is calling each of us to “come after me.” If you feel that God is calling you to follow him as a Catholic Priest, contact the vocations office and let us help you with your discernment. 270-683-1545, www.owensborovocations.com, or [email protected] Sunday, February 1st, after the 8:00 AM Mass. This meal is served free of charge by the Men’s Club in appreciation of parish support. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION 4 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time (B) January 25, 2015 Please continue to pray for our 24 Confirmandi, who will be confirmed here on Sun., Feb. 8, at the 10:30 a.m. Mass. We are very grateful to all who supported these amazing 24 young people on their way to Confirmation. Crissy Stevenson deserves special recognition as a great Confirmation leader, and a great youth minister. While I (Debi) am Confirmation director, I am really happier as a consultant and table leader. Crissy has the skill set to make our program second-to-none. With only a little guidance from me, she wrote our program from the ground up. We looked carefully at all the Confirmation programs on “the market,” but were not satisfied with what is available. Crissy gleaned ideas from her wide experiences directing youth, and discerned materials, which, having a degree in Ministry helps with. We would not have one of the largest and most active youth ministries in the diocese (yes, here at St. Mary Magdalene Parish) without her, and her loyal volunteers. Thanks, Crissy! We love and appreciate you! Please continue to pray for our 10 wonderful 2nd graders, who participated in the Sacrament of Reconciliation here, for the first time, on Sat., January 24. They are now starting to prepare for First Eucharist, which will be at the 10:30 a.m. Mass, on Sunday, April 26. The children are: Cendal Brown Addison Byrne Kylie Fitzgerald Catherine Gillim Kathryn Riney Graci Stephen Logan Wood Simon Ferguson Reese Keller Noah Storm 5 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time (B) January 25, 2015 Our Next Youth Mass is on Saturday, January 24 at the 5:00 PM Mass. Our last Parent and Sponsor Session on February 4. This class we will all meet together with the Confirmation Students, with the topic being “I’m Confirmed– What next?” Parents and sponsors, please plan on attending this session! What exactly is youth ministry? Youth Ministry, here at St. Mary Magdalene is for all youth in grades 6-12. This is for BOTH the public school and the Catholic school students. Our Youth Ministry Program is a community with its foundation rooted in Christ. This is a community that gathers to pray together, learn together, and play together. There are opportunities for catechesis, service, sharing, and just having fun. The Youth Group is not separate from the Church, you are part of the church! The focus is always to integrate you back into the larger community! Those who are involved in their church as teenagers through youth groups are more likely to remain involved and connected to their church as adults. This has been researched and statistically proven. Our youth group is a place that brings together our Catholic community. It’s not about what school you attend or which family belong. When you graduate from school, you are still a part of this church community. What better way to get involved than through our Youth Ministry program? Western Kentucky Teens Encounter Christ is scheduled for February 20-22, 2015, at Gasper River Retreat Center, Bowling Green. This TEC is for High School Seniors & Juniors. Adults who have completed diocesan Safe Environment Training and background checks may observe the weekend. This 3 day retreat focuses on the Paschal Mystery and how we live that out in our day to day lives. It is for those persons who are searching for goals, for acceptance, for meaning, for community, for values, and for God. For weekend applications, please see Crissy, or go to www.wkytec.org. The cost is $60.00 and a $10.00 deposit is required two weeks before TEC begins. This retreat sometimes tends to fill up fast, so get your registrations in soon!! 6 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time (B) January Calendar 24– First Reconciliation 10:00AM 24– Youth Mass 5:00PM 25– PREP 9:00-10:20 AM 25- Middle School Youth Group 5-6:00PM 25- High School Youth Group 6:30-8:30PM 27– Scripture Study after the 7:00 AM Mass 28– Confirmation Session 6:30-8:00PM 31– Voting for Parish Council “God who is mighty has done great things for me, Holy is God’s Name” – Luke 1:49 Bishop William Medley invites you to join him as he celebrates his 5 year Episcopal Ordination Anniversary as the 4th bishop of the Diocese of Owensboro with Mass at Saint Stephen Cathedral on Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at 12:05 p.m. Owensboro Catholic League Bunco Party Date: February 13, 2015 Time: 6:30 pm Where: Home Builders Association Cost: $30.00 a couple or $15.00 for single Grab a date and come out and celebrate an early Valentine’s Day while helping the Owensboro Catholic League Appetizers will be served, BYOB Please contact Chip Pride at 270-316-1233 or Amy Pride at 270-314-6175 to RSVP K of C's Sorgho Council #6101 will be making sausage on February 6th.
