READINGS FOR THE WEEK
FOR THE GLORY OF GOD
The entire history of the Jewish people is directed toward one goal: that
God might be glorified through the chosen people. Christians, too, are called
to “do everything for the glory of God.” In today’s scriptures Paul reminds
us that the best way for us to glorify God is to seek to benefit “the many,” as
Christ did when he shed his blood for all of humankind.
The reading from Leviticus explains one way the Jews sought to benefit
the many, by keeping lepers and leprosy away from the chosen people. Jesus finds a better way. He cures the leper, who immediately re‑enters the
community to spread the good news about Jesus to everyone who will listen. In this way both Jesus and the leper fulfill their calling to glorify the
God who fills us “with the joy of salvation.”

LENT, A DAY OF PUBLIC CATHOLICISM: This Wednesday, Catholics will be
visible at work, at the store, in school, and everywhere inbetween. Conversations may naturally turn to religion, to Catholic
tradition, and to the meaning of LENT. The wearing of ashes is a preChristian expression found in the Book of Judith 9:11, Daniel 9:3, and Jonah
3:6. Jesus was familiar with the practice (Mt. 11:21), and the early Church
made it a sign of public penance. Ashes were sprinkled on penitent's heads.
Around the year 1000, ashes came to be used by all the faithful. In 1091,
Pope Urban II recommended the custom to all Churches in communion
with Rome. We are "branded" with the sign of our Baptism, reminding us
of the purpose of Lent as a time of baptismal renewal, the acceptance of
penitence, and participation in community. The Ash Wednesday
Mass schedule is as follows: 7:00am and 6:00pm.
FAST & ABSTINENCE: there are only two days in the liturgical year when
Catholics are obligated to fast and abstain: Ash Wednesday & Good
Friday. Fasting can help us be aware all day long that Lent, this season of
looking more intently at our spiritual lives, is beginning. Everyone is
encouraged to embrace fasting according to one’s ability, i.e. sickness, very
young. While what’s important is the spirit of this challenge, the Church
gives the following for us as a guideline: FASTING...eating no more than
one full meal (two smaller ones), no solid food between meals for persons
18-59 years of age; no snacking. A person is to ABSTAIN from meat on Ash
Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent for all 14 year olds and older.

TOWN HALL MEETINGS FOR SYNOD OF BISHOPS

Francis is encouraging widespread consultation in dioceses
around the world on questions concerning marriage and family
life. Bishop Medley invites your input at Town Hall Meetings
to be held across the diocese. Add your voice to those of Catholics across the
globe.
There is one more Town Hall Meeting:

Your input will be conveyed to the Synod of Bishops in a report submitted by
Bishop Medley at the conclusion of the listening sessions.

Parish Religious Education Program
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
NOTE: PREP resumes sessions this Sunday, Feb. 15th and on Feb. 22nd.
Good help may be hard to find, but we had just enough last Sunday.
Thanks, God, for our beautiful parish.
Sincere thanks to the wonderful people who helped with the Confirmation reception:
John, Claudia, Ben, Nick, and Gabby O’Bryan; Amanda and Olivia Clary, Kaden Howard;
Tracy and Carsyn Settles; Sue O’Bryan; Steve Hopkins, and Frances Gaddis. They made
a very special day even better, THANKS!
Please pray for our 3 young people who are in formation to receive the Sacraments of
Initiation at the Easter Vigil, on April 4:
Sedia and Cayden Storm, and Mason Shepherd. The Storm sisters are catechumens, and have been
coming here for catechesis (R.C.I.A.) since March 24, 2014. They will receive all 3 Sacraments of
Initiation at that service. Mason is a “candidate,” as he is already baptized, and will be confirmed and
receive Eucharist for the first time, at the Easter Vigil. He has been in faith formation since
November, 2014. Cayden and Mason are students at Sorgho Elementary, in the 5th and 4th grades,
respectively. Sedia is a 6th grader at Burns Middle School. These 3 “inquiring minds” are a joy to work
with, and will soon be full members of the Church. Please keep them in your prayers as they
approach Lent and the weeks leading up to their full participation with us.
FYI: There are 2 young men (candidates) who recently started catechesis toward full
reception into the Catholic Church, here at St. Mary Magdalene. It’s a bit early to say
more, but they are 2 great blessings to us. Through God’s grace, they will continue
weekly sessions, and be ready for “full welcome” in the summer. Your continued prayers
for all those seeking the Fullness of Truth, in the Roman Catholic Church, is
requested.
God is GOOD!!!
God is VERY good!

Just.” As we share from our sacrifices for the needs of our Sister
Diocese in Mandeville Jamaica, we respond not only with words, but
also with deeds to thank the Lord for His many blessings to us and
share in His ongoing mission to tell the whole world of His kindness.
