St. Gregory the Great
Mission Statement
St. Gregory the Great is a Catholic Church made up of people of many different ages, talents, and cultural backgrounds.
We are an urban faith community with a small town feel of welcome and hospitality. Motivated by our baptismal calling,
we accept our duty to embody the presence of Jesus Christ in the world and to take up the mission he entrusted to us by our
word and example.
We glorify God through support and service of our time, talent, and treasure to our church and to the larger community
in which we live.
LIFE’S GREATEST LESSON - LOVE ALL YOU CAN
On Christmas this past year we distributed to all parishioners a free copy of the book Life’s Greatest Lesson by
Allen Hunt. I hope that you have had the opportunity to read the book. If you have not yet had the time to do so,
I want to encourage you to read the book during the Season of Lent. The book is written in novel form and relates
the very touching story of Grandma Lavish and how she developed her mission statement that was symbolized by
a bracelet that she wore on her wrist that had the letters L.E.G.S. printed on it. The letters stand for her mission
statement: Love All You Can. Earn All You Can. Give All You Can. Save All You Can. Each Sunday for these first
four weeks of Lent, I want to highlight one of these statements and invite you to look for ways in which you can
put it into practice in your own life. On this first Sunday of Lent, I want to focus on Love All You Can. Here at St.
Gregory the Great Church, all of our parish ministries, prayer experiences and liturgies in one way or another are
focused on helping us as the people of St. Gregory the Great Church to love God and to love our neighbor as we
love ourselves. We are a community of love that is expressed through our prayer, our worship and our service.
Our Parish Mission Statement expresses this well when it says: “We glorify God through support and service of
our time, talent and treasure to our Church and to the larger community in which we live.” As you go through
this Season of Lent, give some thought to ways in which you can better express your love for God through your
prayer and worship and your love for others through your stewardship of God’s gifts to you. Is there someone
you know who could use a little more love and care. Can you look for ways to tell people that you love them not
only with your words but also with your actions. Last week we celebrated Valentine’s Day, a day dedicated to
love. Can we find ways to keep the spirit of Valentine’s Day alive all through the Season of Lent.
This weekend we will be distributing at all our Masses a purple wrist band which has the letters L.E.G.S. printed
on it. I ask you to wear it during Lent to remind you to keep looking for ways in which you can Love All You Can,
Earn All You Can, Give All You Can and Save All You Can. And if people ask you what the wrist band is all about,
you can use it as a tool for evangelization by explaining what L.E.G.S. stands for and how you are trying to put
these four statements into practice in your own life. – Fr. Paul

FASTING AND ABSTINENCE DURING LENT
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. The law of fasting allows one full meal and two
smaller ones. There should be no eating between meals. The law of abstinence prohibits the eating of meat. The
Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence in the United States. The obligation of abstinence begins at age 14. The law
of fasting obliges all between the ages of 18-59.
STATIONS OF THE CROSS
Every Friday during Lent, the Stations of the Cross will be offered after the 8:30a.m. Mass in the Church. The
Stations of the Cross will also be offered on Good Friday, April 3 at 3p.m.
PARISH LENTEN MISSION
I would like to invite all of you to come to our Parish Mission which will take place from Sunday, March 1
through Wednesday, March 4. Each night the mission will begin at 7p.m. in Church. The mission will be given by
Fr. Brian Fischer, our associate pastor and the former Director of Liturgy at Mundelein Seminary. In this the Year
of the Sacraments, the topic of the mission will be Finding Christ in the Place Where He Dwells: Reconsidering
Sacraments and Sacramentals. The topics will be: Sunday – The Sacramental Impulse: The Sacramentality of the
World; Monday – The Promise of the Sacraments: The Sacramentality of Christ; Tuesday – The Seven Sacraments:
The Sacramentality of the Church; Wednesday – The End of All Sacraments: The Sacramentality of Heaven. Each
talk will last approximately 45 minutes to an hour. After the Wednesday night session, there will be an informal
reception in the basement of the Parish Center. Please consider joining Fr. Brian for as many sessions of our Parish
Mission that your schedule will allow you to participate in. – Fr. Paul
CRS RICE BOWL
This weekend cardboard banks to raise funds for CRS Rice Bowl are available on the Usher’s Tables and at the
North Courtyard ramp entrance. Please take one home with you and fill it with your spare change to support
Catholic Relief Services which provides emergency relief services to people in need around the world. The banks
should be returned on Palm Sunday weekend, Mar. 28-29.
STAR OF BETHLEHEM GROUP
On Feb. 28 and Mar. 1, a representative of the Star of Bethlehem Group will be present in the vestibule of Church
after all of our weekend Masses. Currently, there are many Christian families living in Bethlehem who are completely dependent on carving olive wood figures for their living. The profit from sales will help these families and
will also go to support Catholic clinics, schools and senior citizen homes in the Holy Land.
LENTEN WRIST BANDS
This first weekend of Lent, we ask that you pick up as you leave Church a purple wrist band with the letters
L.E.G.S. printed on it. These letters refer to the four themes found in the book Life’s Greatest Lesson by Allen Hunt
that was distributed to all parishioners at Christmas. The themes are: Love all you can. Earn all you can. Give all
you can. Save all you can. During Lent we ask you to wear this wrist band as a reminder for you to put into practice these four important spiritual tasks.
LENTEN ICON WORKSHOP
On March 14-15, Joseph Malham, our artist in residence, will be hosting an Icon Workshop. It will take place
from 9a.m. until 4p.m. on Saturday, March 14 and from 9a.m. until 3p.m. on Sunday, March 15. If you are
interested, please confirm your reservation by Monday, March 2 by calling Joe Malham at the Parish Center
(773-561-3546) or e-mailing him at [email protected]. Please leave your name and phone number. He needs
to have all reservations in by that date so that he can order the correct amount of materials. The cost is $50 per
participant. Payment can be made the day of the workshop. The workshop is open to people from age 15 on up.
Space is limited to 10 participants. A minimum of six people are needed for the workshop to take place. Should
the number be lower than 6, the workshop will be rescheduled in Spring during the Easter Season.

On March 6, 2015 Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will be from 9:00AM to 4:00PM. Please enter through the

CHURCH TOUR
"Following the International Chamber Artists concert, 'Bars, Barns and Cafes', on Sunday, February 22, 2015, Joe
Franco will be offering a complimentary church tour highlighting the baptistry, ceiling and general architecture
of St. Gregory the Great. All are welcome. The concert begins at 4:00PM and should last approximately 60-90
minutes. Please plan accordingly."
RCIA
The Rite of Election/Continuing Conversion ceremony for those in the RCIA program will take place this
afternoon (Sunday) at Holy Name Cathedral. Our prayerful support accompanies Alex James Frankland, St.
Gregory’s RCIA candidate, who will be called and received into the final stage of preparation for the Easter
sacraments. We look forward to welcoming him as a full member of the St. Gregory’s community on April 4 at
our Easter Vigil.
ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY
In today’s Gospel, Jesus overcomes the temptations to wealth, power and esteem. As we begin Lent,
may we open our hearts to the grace of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.
YOUNG ADULT WOMEN’S CENTER PROJECT
Beginning next weekend, our Parish Young Adult’s Group will be collecting items to help support the Women’s
Center which provides assistance to women experiencing crisis pregnancies. In the area near the Baptismal font,
there will be boxes where you can place items needed by expectant mothers as well as items that mothers of
newborns will need to provide for their child. In the bulletin next weekend, there will be an insert listing items
that they will be collecting.
ANNUAL FISH FRY—GOODIE TABLE
The Fish Fry this year is early,—March 6th—so it’s time to start looking for our delicious “goodie”
recipes. Please drop off your donations to the Parish Center or better still bring them with you to
the Fish Fry. There is always lots of great food and friends to have a cup of coffee with!
SPIRITUAL READING/BOOK DISCUSSION – LIFE’S GREATEST LESSON
Beginning in March, all parishioners who received a copy of the book Life’s Greatest Lesson by Allen Hunt are
invited to join Sr. Regina in a discussion of the book after the 8:30a.m. Mass in the basement of the Parish Center.
The discussion will focus on the four main themes found in the book - Monday, Mar. 9 (Love all you can),
Monday, Mar. 16 (Earn all you can), Monday, Mar. 23 (Give all you can), and Monday, Mar. 30 (Save all you can).
FIRST FRIDAY EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
On Friday, March 6, there will be Eucharistic Adoration in Church from 9a.m. until 4p.m. The day will end with
Benediction at 4p.m. Please consider spending time in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament as a way of entering
more deeply into the Lenten discipline of prayer. Please note, there will be no First Friday adoration on Good
Friday. Please enter and leave the Church via the North courtyard ramp entrance.
YEAR OF SACRAMENTS—ONE WORD AT A TIME
Repair
In the Sacrament of Penance, the priest offers what is called a “penance,” usually a
prayer or action. It is nothing severe or difficult to do. But don’t think that it is of little
importance. In fact, it’s very important.
The penance is a small way to begin to repair the damage of sin. We confess our sins, and
we receive absolution, the forgiveness of those sins. Still, the residue or consequences of
sin remain. If we have been unjust or unkind, we need to repair the damage. If we have
succumbed to habits that diminish us, we need to repair the damage. If we have ignored the needs of others, we
need to repair the damage. The penance reminds us that a converted and forgiven heart will claim responsibility
and then move forward. The penance may be a short prayer or a small action, but do not underestimate its value.

2015 ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL
I want to thank everyone who pledged to the Annual Catholic Appeal this year. Thus far we have received
$21,712 from in-pew pledges towards our goal of $21,116. This total does not include pledges from people who
responded to the direct mail appeal that was sent out by the Archdiocese of Chicago. If you have not yet done so,
may I encourage you to please consider making a pledge to the Annual Catholic Appeal. There are pledge forms
located on the Usher’s Tables in the back of Church and at the North Courtyard Ramp entrance. You can also
obtain a pledge form at the Parish Center. The Annual Catholic Appeal is a worthy cause that allows us to reach
out to touch many thousands of people in the Archdiocese of Chicago whom we could never reach on our own
or as a parish. It benefits our own Parish because all money received over our pledge goal comes back to us as a
rebate. Thank you again for your generosity and support. - Fr. Paul
FESTIVAL OF FORGIVENESS
On Feb. 27-28, the Archdiocese of Chicago is celebrating a Festival of Forgiveness during which confessions will
be heard at 24 parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago for 24 hours straight, from noon on Friday,
Feb. 27 to noon on Saturday, Feb. 28. Parishes in our Vicariate that will be offering 24 hour confessions are Holy
Name Cathedral, 735 N. State, Chicago, IL; Sheil Catholic Center, Northwestern University, 2110 Sheridan Road,
Evanston, IL; St. Catherine Laboure, 3535 Thornwood Ave., Glenview, IL; St. John Brebeuf, 8307 N. Harlem, Niles,
IL; St. Paul of the Cross, 320 S. Washington St., Park Ridge, IL. A complete listing of all 24 parishes can be found on
the Archdiocese of Chicago website, www.archchicago.org. Click on the icon - Festival of Forgiveness – which
can be found on the home page.
On Friday, Feb. 27, we will have confessions available from 7-9p.m. in our Church. On Tuesday, Mar. 24, at
6:30p.m., there will be a Lenten Reconciliation Service in Church followed by an opportunity for individual
confessions. During this season of Lent, take advantage of these opportunities to experience the forgiveness and
mercy of God.

Bars, Barns & Cafés
WORLD PREMIERE, ICA’s 1st COMMISSION
The International Chamber Artists (ICA) are ecstatic to be commissioning the world premiere of If You Travel Far Enough.
We will present the full program on Sunday, February 22, 2015 at 4 PM at St. Gregory the Great Church, 5535 N. Paulina,
Chicago, IL 60640.
This wonderful work was inspired by the photos and texts of Chicago writer Susan Licciardi. Chicago composer Eric
Malmquist accepted the challenge of scoring this piece that is divided into three sections, each with four songs - bars, barns,
and land.
The program includes:
Eric Malmquist, text by Susan Licciardi –
If You Travel Far Enough - WORLD PREMIERE, ICA’s 1st COMMISSION
Paul Schoenfield – Café Music
Ludwig van Beethoven – String Quartet in
F Minor, Op. 95, "Serioso"
“This collaboration is very special not only because both the music and lyrics was composed specifically for ICA but also
because the result is truly phenomenal,” says Patrick Godon, ICA Founder and Artistic Director. “While Susan Licciardi
sparked the flame by writing these beautiful vignettes, Eric Malmquist has masterfully composed a colorful new work for
various combinations of seven instruments with soprano. Join us for this ICA first!”
ICA concerts are free with a suggested donation of $15.
