Troop 53 is headed by Scoutmaster
Richard Cable and Committee
Chairman Caesar Abcarius. The Troop
has 36 youth members: 13 high school
aged and 23 middle school aged. Most
high school Scouts attend Jesuit or Rio
Americano High School while most
middle school Scouts attend Arden
Middle School or Sierra Oaks School. The Troop is divided into four
Patrols according to their school class: sixth, seventh, eighth grades,
and high-school. The Troop holds elections twice a year for positions
of responsibility. Presently the Senior Patrol Leader is Jack Murphy,
Nick Bender is the Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, John Harrington,
Rithvik Yenumula, Chris Granroth, and Liam Hammers are Patrol
Leaders. Kaj Olsen is the Scribe and Order of the Arrow
Representative, Rocco Cable is the Troop Guide, Ryan King is the
Bugler, and Danny Garland is the Den Chief.
More information about Troop 53 with a calendar of events and
pictures of past activities can be found at their web site t53.info.
The Troop started the New Year with their largest fund raising
event—the Christmas Tree Pick-up. They gather Christmas Trees from
the Arden Park neighborhood to take to the County’s North Area
Recovery Station. Residents give the Troop $10 donations for this
service.
Usually for the months of
January and February the
Troop participates in a Snow
Day where the Scouts play in
the snow while learning
survival skills. And then

an overnight snow campout. Lack of snow has cancelled these events.
In January Assistant Scoutmasters Erik Olson organized a trip to San
Francisco with ten older Scouts along with Scoutmaster Cable and
ASM Greg Williams travelling by Amtrak’s Capitol Corridor. The idea
was to have the Scouts plan their adventure using transportation in
the urban landscape: BART, Muni bus, streetcars, cable cars, and shoe
leather. The Scouts stayed at a youth hostel in the Tenderloin and had
an eye-opening adventure walking the area. They performed several
hours of community service serving food at St Anthony’s. Later, the
Scouts ate dinner at Delancey Street Restaurant operated by the nonprofit Delancey Street Foundation. Sunday morning they attended a
Sunday service at Glide Memorial Church where the message was
received loud and clear with rock and blues music performances.
February saw the Troop’s only other fundraiser of the year, See’s
Candies Valentine’s Day sales. The Troop sold out their entire
inventory. Sacramento Suburban Kiwanis members supported the
Troop by purchasing nine one-pound boxes of chocolate candies.
The calendar for March brings the annual Scouting For food where
Scouts will go door-to-door throughout Arden Park collecting bags of
non-perishable groceries and donated to St Mark’s United Methodist
Church where the food will be categorized and distributed to the
needy.

April is when the Troop celebrates its newest members when Pack
53’s Webelos II Scouts become Boy Scouts in the annual Crossover
Ceremony.
Troop 53 cordially invites a Kiwanis member or two to attend a Troop
Meeting to give a short talk and/or slideshow, say five to ten minutes,
about the Kiwanis Service Organization, what you do and why you are
an important part of the community, how you raise funds, and your
Key Clubs. I believe it is important for the Scouts and their parents to
see you. Our Court of Honor is Wednesday March 18, 7 pm at the
Arden Middle School “old” gymnasium. This event is well-attended by
most of the Scouts and their parents. You would be one of the first
speakers of the event so you may take leave or stay the entire hour
and a half. Feel free to contact me by email
[email protected] or phone 916-799-4436.

Happy and Sad Bucks
 Bruce Lagomarsino was featured in the February 18
Sacramento Bee "Our Region" section.
 Barb was happy for the scouts we had as guest and for the
impending beginning of baseball spring training.
 Jim McKelligon was happy to have spent a "grueling 10 days in
San Diego with his daughter and her family. He shared the
riddle his 4 year old granddaughter asked him. If you’re an
American when you go into the bathroom and an American
when you come out of the bathroom, but not when you are
inside what are you? European!
 Tom was happy for a great weekend at Sea Ranch with
beautiful weather and photography experiences sharing time
with former club member Owen Cater and his wife Jan and
another couple that brought a quad copter (drone) with
camera capabilities. Unfortunately he got a tick bite and he
and Nancy were rear ended at low speed as they were
returning to Sacramento. He was also hopeful that the Kings
new coach George Karl would change the direction of the
losing team.
 Jackie was happy for the scouts to be able to join us and sad
to tell us that Marge Dwyer had a heart attack recently and
Rick will be on leave until June.
 Naomi was also happy for the scouts joining us and sad for
deaths in the family. One of those dying was going to go with
her to Hawaii in May and she was cancelling her trip.
 Ronnie Errecart, Naomi's grandson was happy to join us and
the other scouts.
 Chris was happy to have gotten some comp tickets to the final
round of the AT&T golf tournament at Pebble
Beach. Beautiful weather and local golfer Nick Whatney
finishing in second made it a very memorable day.
 Donna was sad that her grandson Wyatt's cold had turned into
pneumonia.

Minnesota Road Work
A road crew supervisor in Minnesota hired Ole to paint the yellow
line down the middle of route 32 heading up toward Bemidji. He was
skeptical about hiring him since he didn't have any painting
background, but he appeared enthusiastic and told him that he really
needed the job. At least his wife Lena told him so.
He explained to Ole that his work day would be to complete 2 miles
of centerline on the road. He was set up with brushes and paint and
his boss got him started. After the first day, the supervisor was
pleased to find that he'd painted 4 miles of road in his 8 hour shift,
instead of the two expected of him. He told Ole that he did an
excellent job and said how pleased he was with his progress.
On the second day, Ole completed painting just the 2 miles of road
that was asked of him. His supervisor was surprised, because on the
first day, he had completed twice as much work. But he didn't say
anything, since 2 miles of road was the amount that the job required
anyway. He decided to just accept it, and to look forward to the next
day when he was sure that Ole would pick up the pace again.
On day 3, the supervisor was disappointed to learn that in his 8 hour
shift, Ole completed painting only 1 mile of road. Ole was called to
the supervisor's office and asked “what was the problem?”
"On your first day, you completed 4 miles of road, on your second
day, 2 miles of road, and now on day 3, you were only able to
complete 1 mile of road. What's the problem, Ole?"
"Vell," Ole replied, "I'll tell you vut is da problem, but I tought a
smart man like you vould figger it out fer yourself. Every day I get
farder and farder avay from da paint can."
