FASTING & ABSTINENCE
REGULATIONS
FOR LENT
Ash Wednesday & Good Friday;
are days of fast and abstinence.
Fridays of Lent are also days of abstinence.
Fasting is to be observed by all 18 years of age
through age 59. On a fast day, one full meal is allowed.
Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may
be taken according to each one's needs, but together
they should not equal another full meal. Eating
between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including
milk and juices, are allowed.
Abstinence is observed by all 14 years of age and
older. On days of abstinence, no meat is allowed. Note
that when health or ability to work would be seriously
affected, the law does not oblige. When in doubt
concerning fast and abstinence, the parish priest
should be consulted.
Fasting almsgiving. and prayer are the three
disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens
should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit
of penance, and of preparation for baptism or of
renewal of baptism at Easter.
Because of our
special program
“Faustina:
Messenger of Divine
Mercy,” there will
be no “Fast” Food
Friday this week..
!! PLEASE READ !!
Beginning Ash Wednesday, February 18th, Daily
Mass will be held Monday - Friday at 8:30am
and 5:30pm throughout the weeks of Lent and
conclude on Wednesday of Holy Week, April 1st.
We will also be praying the Divine Office or
Liturgy of the Hours at Lauds or Morning Prayer
after 8:30am Mass and at Vespers or Evening
Prayer at 5pm before 5:30 Mass.

Liturgy of the Hours (if you have one) or the

40 Cans for Lent Appeal
The 40 cans for Lent appeal is a food drive coordinated by your Knights of Columbus council.
We encourage all parishioners to prayerfully look into their hearts and contribute 40
“cans” ( items from the needed list from the Mathew 25:35 food pantry.) and contribute 1 item
for each day in Lent. Drop off points will be at the back of the church, at the Caritas Gift Shop
lobby, and at the Food Pantry itself in the plaza next to Seacoast Bank on Jensen Beach Blvd and
inside Winn Dixie on Jensen Beach Blvd.
The Food Pantry is in need of canned meats like tuna or chicken, canned vegetables, peanut butter, jelly, 1
lb. bags of rice, soups, canned meals such as spaghetti & meatballs, pasta, canned fruits, cereals, powdered
or shelf box milk, canned tomato products, spaghetti sauce and pork & beans.
“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and
you welcomed me …”
God Bless you all for your generosity during the Lenten Season!!
Clean, Clean!
My grandson Andrew is two years old and just recently figured out how to climb out of his crib. Each morning, once his
feet hit the floor, he darts to Mommy and Daddy’s bedroom to announce, “Awake!” It’s not a command aimed towards
them, just an announcement to let them know he isn’t sleeping anymore. As if they didn’t already know.
Andrew likes to clean things. If he sees something that he thinks needs to be cleaned, he says, “Clean, clean!” and gets to
work. For example, if something spills, he grabs a towel and starts rubbing it around until the mess is gone or at least
smeared around a bit. But his newest initiative, especially right after announcing, “Awake!” is to say, “Clean, clean!” and
begin vacuuming the house with one of those battery-powered vacuum cleaners. It’s relatively quiet compared to a regular
vacuum cleaner, but I suppose not at 6:00 AM.
Leprosy was at the center of the readings in last week’s Mass. During the time of Moses, lepers were required to remain
separate from others. If approached, the lepers were instructed to shout a warning of, “Unclean, unclean!” In the Gospel
reading that followed, Jesus healed a leper and instructed him to present himself to the priest. Jesus was sending a clear
message regarding the New Covenant. It must have been quite a challenge to the priest.
After listening to the reading, I imagined the leper in the body of my little grandson Andrew, approaching the priest with a
big, happy grin and announcing, “Clean, clean! And then skipping away with a sing-songy, “Nah, nah, nah, nah, naaaaah,
naaaaah!” As if to say, “Jesus healed me when all that could be done before was to be kept away!”
When word of the leper being healed began to spread, the Gospel reading goes on to say that “it was impossible for Jesus to
enter town openly. He remained outside in deserted places, and people kept coming to Him from everywhere.” We now
find Jesus not only healing the leper, but taking on the leper’s former state of being kept away. That’s what Jesus does. He
heals and takes our burdens upon Himself.
The thought of this story returned to me again after my wife and I were discussing our plans for Lent. I was sort of joking
when I told her I was going to give up anxiety for Lent. But when she replied that it wasn’t such a bad idea, that she would
like to do the same, I had to give it some serious thought.
The very next day I was reading a book that quoted 1 Peter 5:7, which instructs us to “cast all anxiety upon Him, because
He cares for us.” These words gave me pause and a strong resolve to do my best to really give up anxiety. Not easy for us
chronic worriers. But nothing is impossible for God. He cares for us. He takes our burdens upon Himself. Perhaps all I
have to do is try not to hold on so tight.
So I have a plan for Lent. When I am tempted to worry and feel anxiety creeping in, I am going to do my best to “become
as a child.” In fact, I’m going to model myself after a special two-year old named Andrew. I’m going to view anxiety as a
crib not a crutch. I’m going to imagine climbing out and tell myself “Awake!” I’m going to cast all my anxiety upon Jesus.
Then I’m going to repeat those two words, “Clean, clean!” I might even skip away with a “Nah, nah, nah, nah, naaaah,
naaaah!”
Lent is going to be a little different for me this year. I pray that it is for you too.
EVANGELISM IN ACTION: Awake and clean, clean!
This article is dedicated to Father Thomas Rynne, who gently guided me through my first confession, ended with those
classic words, “What a beautiful confession,” and sent me away, “Clean as the pure white snow of Baptism.” May you
rest in God’s love, Father Rynne.

ADULT FAITH FORMATION AND RCIA
“Go and sin no more.” Perhaps no words of Jesus convey as much love and
compassion as these addressed to the woman who was nearly stoned for adultery.
This powerful Scripture passage taken along with the
parable of the prodigal son, who was welcomed back
into his father’s house with rejoicing, gives us a
profound picture of how God looks at each of us as
sinners.
Join us as we take a closer look at the Sacraments of
Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick. Everyone
is welcome, so don't forget to invite a friend or two!

Join us Wednesdays, at 6:30PM in the Parish Hall for this amazing study of God’s
chosen people. Through this study we will travel with the Israelites from their
preparation to enter the Promised Land to their return from exile. We will learn, like
the Israelites, what it means to be “God’s people”.
What others are saying about the study. . .
“The study provides a powerful
combination of sound,
up-to-date Catholic Bible scholarship and
effective use of
the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the
wisdom of the
