Further divisions by weight are made in the adult sparring divisions. Each ring size is 20' x 20'. Form Competition For scoring forms, we use hand signals while holding up fingers to represent scores from 5 to 10 (7 is average). For indicating a half point such as 5.5, a judge would hold up both hands showing 5 fingers while crossing their arms. There are five judges per ring and scoring is done by all five. However, the students score is determined by the elimination of the highest and lowest scores given and the addition of the three remaining scores. Competition begins with two competitors doing their forms at a time. After they are finished they will be scored. At the end of the competition, the student with the highest score is the winner. In the case of a tie for first, second or third, the tying students will be asked to do their form again, after the two tying students have done their forms, the judges will vote by a show of hands. The judges will be looking for the following in each student’s execution of their form. Please remember this is an open tournament (open to many different styles), each judge may be putting more importance on some things than others. “STANCES”- Strong, solid, sure footed, straight feet alignment, hips and shoulders straight. Head erect, eyes forward and focused on each technique. “MOVEMENTS”- Snappy, powerful, strong counter force, blocks and kicks delivered to the proper area, breath should be coordinated with movements, hip rotation, smooth timing and rhythm, strong kihap, sharp beginning and ending. “ATTITUDE”- Confident, at ease-yet alert, respectful, that of a warrior. Breaking Competition For scoring breaking, we use hand signals while holding up fingers to represent scores from 5 to 10 (7 is average). For indicating a half point such as 5.5, a judge would hold up both hands showing 5 fingers while crossing their arms. After they are finished they will be scored. At the end of the competition, the student with the highest score is the winner. In the case of a tie for first, second or third, the tying students will be asked to do their break again, no boards just demonstrating the technique after the two tying students have demonstrated their techniques, the judges will vote by a show of hands. Competitors must supply their own boards. Age 8 and under 3” boards, Age 9-12 6” boards, and Age 13 and up 10” boards. Black Belt total of three boards or less, all others total of two boards or less.(Only pine grade 1”X12” wood to be used) Point Sparring Competition (Continuous Point with clickers) The sparring event will use the standard Tae Kwon Do point sparring rules. The point areas will be the sides, top, and back of the head. Nothing to the neck and face area! The front of the torso is a target area for striking as well to the sides of the ribs, stomach, chest, but not to the throat or the sides of the throat, and no strikes below the belt. One point will be awarded for any hand or kicking technique to the torso area. Two points will be awarded for any kick to the helmet area. No kicking to the neck or face. The Competitor scoring the most points at the end of two minutes will be declared the winner. SAFETY IS KEY, if a competitor is injured the match will stop and the center judge will make a call with the corners to decide on a disqualification or warning on the attacker. Warnings and point loss may occur as well for other infractions such as continuing to kick below the belt or to the back, a kick or punch that hits the face. Absolutely no hands or fakes to the head area. Tournament committee has full authority and will make final calls. Please note all competitors are to wear foam head gear, chest protector, hand pads that cover the fingers, feet pads that cover the toes, a mouth guard and groin guard! No exceptions. Points are awarded for clean unblocked techniques to any qualified target. One point is awarded for any foot or hand technique to the body, and an extra point to any foot technique to head, controlled within one inch. (NO PUNCHING TO HEAD AREA). Qualified Targets Qualified targets are the following: the front and sides of the torso above the belt and below the neck and sides, top, and back of the head. The head within one inch with a foot technique. (There are special rules pertaining to the head as a target, please check the next section on warnings, point awards and disqualification) Warnings, Point Reductions and Disqualifications A student will get a warning for breaking the following rules. A point may be taken away or negative points given for frequent infractions or excessive violation of these rules: (1) Contesting the calling or not calling of points. (2) Any contact to the face. (3) Holding/Grabbing an opponent for more than a second. (4) Running or moving out of the designated ring. (5) Attacking a forbidden target - groin, knees, back, and punch to the head. (6) Using a forbidden technique, i.e. spinning backhand, leg sweep, 540 degree kicks. (7) Excessive contact to any part of the body. (8) Fighting after the call to stop. (9) Coaching from outside the ring. A student will only be allowed two warnings before loss of point, three warnings and student will be disqualified. The center judge does have the authority to subtract or give negative points to any offender. Only two face contact warnings are necessary for disqualification. Intentional excessive contact is automatic disqualification. The center referee will determine if the infraction was intentional, He/She may then issue a warning themselves. A contact call overrides all other calls for points. A competitor will be allowed one 30 second injury timeout. If unable to continue at the end of the 30 seconds the competitor injuried will forfeit the match. Any blood drawn no matter the incident is immediate disqualification! NOTE: This is a single elimination tournament and we will be using the bye system based on the number of competitors per division. How to Win The winner is the competitor who has the highest score after the two minute round. In case of a tie, the bout will resume with the winner being the competitor receiving the most points in a one minute overtime round. A competitor can also win by the disqualification of their opponent. Directions The tournament will take place at the Highland Community College Sports Center/YMCA Complex located in Freeport, IL.
