How to use this Guide This Course Enrolment Guide 2015 provides you with information on when and where the units available for study in this program(s) will be offered in 2015. Enrolling in units for 2015 1. Read Section 2. ‘Program Map’ for information on course structure and unit sequence. Take note of any prerequisite or co-requisite requirements before selecting particular units. Take note of the study period in which units are offered. • A prerequisite is a requirement that must be met by a student before enrolment in a stipulated unit. It is your responsibility to ensure that you meet the prerequisites for a unit prior to enrolling into that unit. • A co-requisite is a requirement that must be met by having already passed or being concurrently enrolled in an associated unit in order to be able to enrol in the stipulated unit. If you choose units that are not listed below or you do not choose the recommended mix of units then you may find that you cannot complete your course in minimum time and that you may encounter problems with your timetable. This is a note for students in the BTBA who want to be History teachers. Students who want Modern History as a first teaching area, must include in their History major at least 6 units of Modern History (only two at 100-level). Students who want Modern History as a second teaching area, must choose 4 units of Modern History (only two at 100-level). Students who want Ancient History as a second teaching area should choose 4 units of Ancient History (only two at 100-level). [Note that HIST216 Middle Ages and Beyond and HIST308 Making History counts as Modern History.] Please note: Modern and Ancient History are treated as the single discipline area of “History” in the Curriculum and Teaching stream. Therefore, in addition to History, you must have a second, non-History teaching discipline area in your Arts units. HIST106 Australian Indigenous Peoples Past and Present and HIST308 are compulsory units for all History major students. Student undertaking a minor+2 in History should also include these units. This is a note for students in the BTBA who want to be Economics/Business teachers. The sequence of Economics discipline and curriculum units are a qualification to teach Economics/Business only. To qualify for a teaching major in Economics and Business Studies, you will need the 8 units of Economics and complete MGMT100 and ACCT100 in Year 3 as your extended Major. Please seek advice from your Course Coordinator. This is a note for students in the BTBA who want to be Economics/Business teachers. Information last updated on 25 February 2015 Page 6 Course Enrolment Guide – Bachelor of Teaching/Bachelor of Arts (Humanities, Mathematics & Visual Arts) –Students commenced 2015 - Strathfield 2015 Core Curriculum The Australian Catholic University Core Curriculum has been designed for undergraduate courses to focus on aspects of the University’s identity and mission. The units emphasise critical judgement, clear expression, ethical decision-making and concern for others as individuals and as a community. Depending on your course, the Core may be comprised of one or two University Core units, two Program Core units and one community engagement unit. The Core Curriculum units are included in the program maps. For more information on the Core Curriculum please refer to http://www.acu.edu.au/429466. The University Core Curriculum units are: UNCC100 Our World, Community and Vulnerability UNCC300 Understanding Self and Society: Contemporary Perspectives These units are often taught over differing week patterns to allow for student placements at various times during semester. Students should take special care to note the week pattern of tutorials when they allocate in tutorial direct to ensure that they are choosing the correct stream for their course. Note: Students should enroll in Mixed Mode and not in On Campus mode. Please consult with your Course Coordinator if the following applies to you: • You need to repeat a UNCC unit due to a previous fail grade. • You are unable to complete a UNCC unit during the standard semester it is offered. • You plan to enroll in an advertised international option specific to the Core. Arts Majors and Minors/Minor +2 First find your degree in the boxes below. Then choose one major and one ‘minor +2’ for your degree from the list. These will become your teaching areas. A major is your main area of focus (it has 8 units). A minor +2 will be your secondary focus (6 units). When you log in to Student Connect to enrol, you need to enrol in the compulsory units as well as the Arts areas required for your major and minor/minor +2. Allowable Majors and Minors/Minor+2. Students in the BTeach/BA Humanities Degree Choice of major from: Majors: Business Studies or Economics, Geography, History, Literature. Choice of minor+2 from: Minor +2: Ancient/Modern History, Computing, Drama, Mathematics, Sociology, Visual Arts, Economics, Geography, Literature or Study of Religions. Students in the BTeach/BA Mathematics Degree: Compulsory Major: All students in this degree will do a Mathematics major Choice of minor +2 from: Computing, Drama, Economics, Geography, Literature, Study of Religions or Visual Arts. Students in the BTeach/BA Visual Arts Degree: Compulsory major: All students in this degree will do a major in Visual Arts that may be extended with an extra 2 Visual Arts units to create a Major+2 (10 units) Then a choice of minor from: Computing, Drama, Economics, Geography, Ancient/Modern History, Literature, Mathematics or Study of Religions. Information last updated on 25 February 2015 Page 8 Course Enrolment Guide – Bachelor of Teaching/Bachelor of Arts (Humanities, Mathematics & Visual Arts) –Students commenced 2015 - Strathfield 2015 Majors, Minors and Specialist Teaching Areas The major and minor/minor +2 sequences you complete (and in some cases the specific units you complete) will determine what Curriculum Pedagogy and Assessment units you can take, and what you are eligible to teach upon graduation. The subjects you can teach are known as your “Specialist Teaching Areas”. The following table outlines the requirements for each Specialist Teaching Area. Specialist Teaching Area Arts Sequence Needed Comments (no more than two 100 level units in a minor. A major must have two 300 level units by completion.) Business Studies (Only available in Bteach/BA Humanities degree) Major in Business Studies Students must take 8 Business Studies units for this option. To qualify for a teaching major in Economics and Business Studies, you will need the 8 units of Economics and complete MGMT100 and ACCT100 in Year 3 as your Advanced Major. Do not combine Business Studies with an Economics major/minor/minor+2 as they lead to the same/similar teaching specialist area. Drama Minor +2 in Drama Minor +2 must include both theory and theatre/performance units Economics Major or Minor +2 in Economics Minor is only available in the BT/BA Mathematics English Major or Minor +2 in Literature This major/Minor+2 leads to both English and Literature teaching. History Major or Minor +2 in History To major in History, you must choose between a first teaching area in Modern History or a first teaching area in Ancient History (6 units plus 2 core units). It is not possible to do both. However, you can complete extra units in Modern or Ancient History if there is space in your degree to do so. Modern and Ancient History are treated as the single discipline area of “History”, therefore, in addition to History, you must have a second, non-History teaching discipline area in your arts units. HIST106 is a compulsory unit in first year for History rd major/minor+2 students. HIST308 is a compulsory 3 year unit in the History major. Humanities (Society & Culture) A minor in History (4 units) st nd completed in 1 and 2 year plus 2 units of either Geography, Sociology or Philosophy in third year The School sector advises including two units of Geography in this combination. Students who wish to be History teachers should take a History major/minor+2. This is really a minor that is extended with two electives. This should normally consist of 2 x 100 level units; 2 x 200 level units and 2 x 300 level units taken over three years. ‘Minor’: 'Minor': 40 cp in prescribed units in one discipline or approved interdisciplinary area, normally including at least 10 cp at introductory level and at least 20 cp at advanced level.. Enrolment sessions are held in early February. You must attend one to ensure you have completed your enrolment correctly. Where do I find the units (subjects) for each major and minor? The next section of the guide has a list of units on offer for 2015. As you are in first year, most of your units should be introductory 100 level units. The Course Enrolment Guide is a ‘live’ document it may be updated throughout the year. What happens if I want to do a major that is not listed for the degree I am enrolled in? It’s important not to mix and match between the degrees. Some specialist teaching areas require a major, and this is only possible in the Humanities degree. (The other degrees have compulsory majors of their own). What happens if I want to study a language, linguistics, exercise science or other area not listed? The BTeach/BA degrees do not accommodate those options at present at Strathfield. Languages are available through cross-institutional study within the Bachelor of Arts degree only with prior approval from your Course Coordinator. What is the difference between Study of Religions and Theological Studies? Study of Religions is the nationally accredited specialist teaching area. It includes studies of different religions (including Christianity). The Study of Religions sequence also includes the three key units required by the Catholic Education Office. Theological Studies is specifically on Christian theology, it also includes the units recommended by the CEO. It does not include units on other religions except as part of Biblical studies. What is the difference between a minor and minor+2? How do I know which I will take? All students will take one 8 unit major. Most students will then also take a minor+2 (6 units) in their second area. However, for students in BTeach/BA Mathematics and BTeach/BA Visual Arts who want to specialise in those areas by taking extra units in Maths or Visual Arts should follow as below. • Students in the Mathematics specialisation normally complete a Major, two Mathematics Electives and must complete a Minor in another teaching subject. • Students in the Visual Arts specialisation normally complete a Major plus two Visual Arts Electives and must complete a Minor in another teaching subject. Part time students usually enroll in their 1st year Arts units first and then the next year complete their first year Education units. Any part time study will extend the degree. A usual part-time candidature will be 8 years. It is not possible to simply speed up the degree later, although it is possible to return to full-time study. Part time study is an important option for people who do significant amounts of paid work; or who have medical or personal circumstances that affect their study. Remember also to investigate the disability support available if that is relevant. I have a disability and would like to know what support the university provides The university has a Disability liaison unit to assist students find out all the ways the university can support study at ACU. This includes assistance with tutorial times, note takers, exam and test adjustments and many other forms of support. It’s a good idea to make contact with the Disability advisors early (well before the start of the semester If possible) so that an Individual Education Plan can be established for you. Students who wish to train in 3 specialist teaching areas (including RE) Within the BTeach/BA degree, students may train for two specialist teaching areas. Students who wish to add a third, Religious Education, may apply to undertake a Graduate Certificate in Religious Education (4 units) that may be obtained at the end of the degree (end of fourth year) as a separate study option. Program Information The Bachelor of Teaching/Bachelor of Arts (Humanities) is a dual undergraduate degree leading to a career in secondary teaching with a specialisation in Humanities. It combines compulsory education units, teaching discipline units and professional experience, with two Arts areas. Professional Experience Professional Experience teaching rounds are block placements which must be undertaken at the times noted on the Faculty of Education and Arts Strathfield calendar. The teaching placements cannot be undertaken on a part time basis. InPlace - Placement Management System for Education Students The Faculty of Education and Arts at Australian Catholic University (ACU) is implementing InPlace, a placement management system which streamlines registration, requests, and allocation of professional and community engagement placements. InPlace will provide education students with greater access to information relating to their Professional Experience placements. Students enrolling in Professional Experience units, with an EDFX, ADFX and SDFX code, will be able to register and access allocated placement records online. Key benefits from InPlace include: • Online registration for placements • Ease in updating professional/community placement information • Ability to receive placement notifications online • Access placement allocations online InPlace is based on Student Connect data. You will no longer have to fill forms manually for placements. In order that “best match” placements are made, please ensure that your personal details, including address and mobile phone number is current and up to date in Student Connect. Note: Mandatory documentation such as Working with Children Checks/Police Checks will still need to be lodged in person at your local Professional and Community Experience Placement Office. Additional Requirements – Working With Children Check and National Police Check The Commission for Children and Young People Act 1998 for New South Wales requires all people in child related employment whether in paid employment or working as a volunteer to complete an online form at http://www.kids.nsw.gov.au/Working-with-children/New-Working-with-Children-Check. Students will then need to attend the Motor Registry to complete the final clearance. Students within the Faculty of Education and Arts NSW teacher education programs are to provide the Clearance Confirmation letter to the relevant administration officer within the Field Based Learning Unit. The Clearance Confirmation letter will be stored in accordance with the Act at the Australian Catholic University. All students assigned to field based learning activities must meet these requirements prior to confirmation of their placement and, having done so, are suitable for child-related employment. The free, online module has been provided by the Australian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA) and is available at http://etraining.allergy.org.au/. It can be completed in less than one hour and participants will receive a certificate of completion which they should present a copy to school Principals at the commencement of professional experience placements. A copy of the certificate should also be presented to the relevant administration officer within the Field Based Learning Unit. International students must obtain and present their relevant police check from their home country and from any other country/ies where they have been domiciled for twelve months or more for the last ten years. These police checks must be sighted and authenticated before students will be permitted to undertake Professional and Community Experience. Study Abroad Preservice teachers consistently achieving high academic results may consider studying abroad for one semester, usually in the first semester of Year 3. Study abroad will extend the length of time necessary to complete your course. Transitional arrangements Students who wish to transfer from other ACU campuses or other universities need to consult the appropriate BT/BA course coordinator. Part-time and Out of phase students need to speak with the Course Coordinator. Failing one or more units will result in a student becoming out of phase and will extend the length of the course.
