There is a very distinctive odour and these ear infections cause ears that fold over or hang down do not have that same airflow.
Some dogs, such as poodles and Shih Tzus, are also prone to
most dogs quite a bit of discomfort. When their ears become

can ask your veterinarian to show you how to safely remove it.
If you have a dog that enjoys the water, your furry friend could
be more inclined to develop ear infections. Therefore, it’s extra
important to dry your dog’s ears thoroughly after a bath or swim.
There are other types of ear infections, such as parasites or ear
mites, which can spread among pets, especially if they sleep in
the same places. Less common issues with ears include growths
and irritation from foreign bodies, such as dirt and other small
debris.
Fortunately, ear infections aren’t usually expensive to treat. In
most cases, vets will prescribe ear drops. This type of topical
treatment is considered the best option for treating an ear infection
quickly. In some cases, vets will prescribe oral medications, such
as antibiotics, antihistamines or anti-inflammatories. These
treatments are usually done alongside ear drops, and not as an
alternative.
In chronic cases, a dog’s ear canal can thicken, resulting in a
narrower path that makes it easier for debris to get trapped.
Beyond perpetuating the cycle of infection, thickened ears are
uncomfortable for your dog, and can have a negative impact his
hearing over time.
Take care of your dog’s ears, and if you have questions, consult
your veterinarian.

A parent is a child’s first and most
important teacher. This is an
ongoing role and, even when you
don’t realize it, your child is
watching and learning from you.
Your actions have a strong impact
on your child’s understanding of the
world.
Here are some of the many things
your child might learn by watching
you:
RESPECT
• Your child first learns about
respect when you treat her in a
respectful way. A child deserves the
same respect you would show anyone
else in your life.
• She watches the example you set
in the way you interact with family
members and friends, as well as the
wide array of people you encounter.
• She learns about self-respect when
she sees you taking some ‘me’ time
to recharge.
PRIORITIES
• He realizes that family time is
important when you put down your
phone and set aside other concerns so
you can give your full attention during
family meals and activities.
• When he sees the way you
express gratitude, he learns to
appreciate his belongings and the
people in his life.
• When you do not regularly use
gifts or money as rewards, he learns
that happiness cannot be bought.
RESPONSIBILITY
• She watches as you take
ownership of your mistakes and
she learns to focus on solutions
rather than problems.
• She gains confidence when you
show trust in her abilities and do
not do things for her that she could
do for herself.
• When you keep your word and
follow through on promises, she
learns to be dependable and
consistent.
Whether you are raising a toddler
or a teen, your actions make a
lasting impression on your child.
Simply put, try to act the way you
would like your child to act, and
treat your child the way you would
like to be treated. Make every effort
to be the person you would like
your child to become.

Add some dieffenbachia dazzle to your home
Dieffenbachia is

will eventually get
a bit leggy and not
be as sturdy-stemmed as one grown in stronger light.
Taller varieties can become top-heavy and if they
are not planted in large, heavy containers, they may
topple. One strategy is to put the pot into a cachepot
to keep it stable.
Dumb cane is the common name for this plant,
and the peculiar name is derived from the fact that
the plant contains toxins that, when ingested or
touched, may cause a type of temporary paralysis
or skin irritation — which is never fatal and not often
serious.
There is no doubt that this plant contains volatile
chemicals as several cancer research projects have
investigated the plant’s usefulness in developing
cancer medications.
Dieffenbachia is a tropical plant and is native to
Central and South American tropical regions. It is
an understory plant so it is not fond of exposure to
direct sunlight as the sunlight in a tropical rainforest
understory is always heavily filtered.
It likes to have a porous, well drained soil; a mix
of two-thirds peat moss and one-third perlite works
well for this plant. The soil should be kept
moderately moist but not wet as dieffenbachia can
be killed if they get too wet. Bacteria and mould will
develop and destroy the plant.
Dieffenbachia also likes heat, which is not unusual
for a tropical plant. It will not thrive in a cool
environment, and the warmer the temperatures, the
happier it will be.
Dieffenbachia has a straight stem and simple (no
leaflets) alternate (alternate one after the other up
the stem) leaves. The large leaves, held out to the
side of the stem by sturdy branches, are wide and
come to a point.

A dwarf variety is indeed dwarfed by a nearby giant
towering over it.
This large specimen has silver white marking son its
leaves.
Like its cousins the aglaonema, spathiphyllum,
and philodendron, the dieffenbachia produces
spathes rather than flowers. These are rather
nondescript and are usually cut off; plants grown
indoors rarely bloom.
Although the leaf tips can brown due to too much
fertilizer or from lack of moisture in the soil, the
dieffenbachia naturally over time sheds its lower
leaves. The leaves will yellow, turn brown and curl
up and drop off the plant. These unsightly leaves
should be removed when they begin to yellow.
Because a mature dieffenbachia — some varieties
can reach a height of two metres — will over time
lose its lower leaves and have bare, rather unattractive
lower stems, cuttings are usually taken from a mature
plants and then the parent plant is discarded.
The terminal top shoots can be cut off and rooted
in soilless mix or in water. Pieces of stem can also
be used to create new plants.
The piece of a stem must have an eye for it to root
and the best practice is to lay a 10 centimetre long
section of stem on its side and half bury it with damp
soilless mix; roots will appear in about four
weeks.
A good way to do this so the cutting and
soil have lots of moisture surrounding
them is to root the cutting inside a plastic
pop bottle — with the cap removed.
There are many varieties of
dieffenbachia and they range in size from
dwarf plants that grow less than 30
centimetres tall to giants that reach more
than two metres in height. Leaf colour also
varies widely between varieties.
Leaves of dieffenbachia are its claim to
fame; they are wonderfully patterned and
very showy. The leaves will have white,
cream, ivory or white markings on their
dark green surfaces — although some
varieties have so much variegation that
there is very little green showing.
Examples are D.’Topic Honey’, whose
leaves are almost pure pale gold with a very
The leave of this specimen are almost totally limegreen/gold. (Albert Parsons/For the Sun)
thin green leaf margin. Another is D. ‘Picta’ whose
leaves have an almost totally white mid-rib.
Leaves can have blotches or dots of colour or they
can have large patches of a single colour on their
surfaces. The leaves are shiny and smooth — or
sometimes a bit rippled — and they are easily
cleaned by wiping them with a dampened soft cloth.
Dieffenbachia is an easy care, statuesque plant
that does not demand a lot of light or a lot of care.
Whether it is a dwarf variety used in a dish garden
or as a tabletop plant or a larger specimen sitting on
the floor, a dieffenbachia plant would be an attractive
addition to any interior space.

Music scene continues to thrive with Man Alive
Frank McGwire
HAPPENINGS
ON THE SCENE
Frank McGwire is a veteran of the
local radio industry, a musician and
booster of the music scene in Brandon and Westman.
» [email protected]
here’s a new sound being
created in Westman by a band
that incorporates an eclectic
combination of music into
their sound. The end result of
this varied blend of genres is a
sound that will leave you
saying “Man alive! This is
interestingly new!”
Hence, their name — Man
Alive.
They describe themselves as
a cutting-edge “newgrass”
(bluegrass with drums) band.
With bluegrass roots and
influences of rock, jazz, pop,
folk, country and even
classical, these guys are
guaranteed
to
surprise
audiences with their sound. It’s
delightfully fresh and new, and
truly a mix not witnessed in
these parts or anywhere else
all too often.
Man Alive started out as a
trio last spring when local
players Matt Zimmerman,
Rory Graham and eventually
Scott Brown joined forces. By
the fall of 2014, they decided
they wanted a bigger, fuller
sound so they called upon
Jacob Herd to handle bass and
keyboards
(interestingly
enough, Jacob is currently
finishing up his jazz
performance
degree
at
Brandon University on
saxophone) and BU music
student Jon Smith to hold
down the beat on drums.
Since their transition into a
quintet, they’ve been playing
more and more gigs, and
they’ve managed to keep the
momentum going strong by
producing a six-song EP.
To celebrate their first
recorded effort, they’ll be
doing two shows this
weekend, including Friday
night at the West End
Community Centre as well as
their official CD release show
at the Double Decker on
Saturday.
Brandon’s newest band, Man Alive — (L-R) Scott Brown, Rory Graham, Matt Zimmerman, Jacob Herd and Jon Smith — is playing back-to-back shows this weekend,
including the West End Community Centre Friday and their official CD release party at the Double Decker Saturday night. (Submitted)
In fact, the guys played a
very important gig at the
Decker just last month.
“That was the gig we
decided to play our debut
show as a five-piece,” said
drummer
and
band
spokesperson (at least for this
article) Jon Smith. “The band
had played a little as a trio, and
once Jacob and I were added,
we played a few jam nights
and socials, but we decided to
mark Jan. 17 of this year at the
Double Decker as our first
‘debut show’ featuring us. We
played three sets, brought lots
of friends out, and basically
tried to make it our coming out
party. It was a lot of fun!”
So where did the name
come from? Was it from the
old Canadian TV series “Man
Alive” which took its name
from a poem by St. Irenaeus,
a second-century bishop of
Lyon who wrote: “The glory
of God is man fully alive, and
the life of man is the vision of
God.”
Smith is quick to dismiss
that notion.
“Oh wow, I wish we were
that deep! The actual origin of
the name is not that inspired
— I think Matt just liked the
phrase ‘man alive.’ However,
I find the band name to be
really suited to us. To me, the
words ‘man alive’ evoke
visions of what our playing is;
hard guitar picking, driving
drumming and bass playing,
tasteful textures, and pushing
to our limits in our live shows.
“When I think ‘man alive,’
I feel what it feels like to put
yourself out there, take risks
onstage, and work hard to
connect with an audience, but
I also feel the afterperformance sweat, fatigue,
and the desire to make more
music. The words have
powerful associations for me.”
Their website bio says
they’re
a
cutting-edge
“newgrass” band, with
bluegrass roots and influences
of rock, jazz, classical, pop,
folk, and country. That means
the band offers up covers with
a twist, said Smith, who is in
his third year at BU in the jazz
studies program.
“We cover a wide range of
bands, tweaked to fit our style
and sound,” he said. “For
example, we do a couple of
Johnny Cash tunes which are
sort of a natural fit, but we also
cover songs such AC/DC’s
‘Highway to Hell,’ which gets
altered with a train beat vibe.
We also cover traditional songs
such as ‘Alabama Jubilee’ and
‘Bowing the Strings’ that
feature Rory on fiddle.”
For those looking to catch
the band at an upcoming
show, fear not, as they are not
your average cover band and
they do plenty of original
material,
“We have about seven
performance-ready originals,
but we are always writing
more,” said Smith, who is
confident Man Alive’s eclectic
blend of music styles offered
up with a mainly bluegrass
delivery will be successful.
“If anything, the blend of
styles will help make our band
unique. Matt and Rory
certainly have lived for a long
time in the language of
bluegrass and traditional
music, but for me — and I
think for the other guys as well
— bluegrass music was not
such a familiar thing.
“I’m personally still learning
the nuances of this style, but I
think as I progress I’m going
to bring my natural influences
and tendencies out; and as a
band we will hit on something
that is not necessarily 100 per
cent blue/newgrass, but
something that is uniquely
‘Man Alive.’”

Man Alive in action, you
