Mountain Biking in Bom Bom State Forest - Everyone is welcome.
For information on our club and events can be found on our Facebook page "Bom
Bom Racing".
General Information: There are rules and generally riding at Bom Bom and can be
ridden most times, if rules are followed. The main rule we ask is not to ride tracks after
substantial rain as bikes will damage tracks and cause environmental damage. Most
riders are aware of this condition. There are other rules like not to litter and respect to
the flora and fauna in the forest as an example.
The rules are posted on the sign at the entrance to the Bom Bom tracks.

Weekly Grafton Farmer’s & Grower’s Markets to be held Duke Street Road
Reserve, Market Square. Starting at 7.00am to 12.00 noon. The Farmers Market has
a great range of fresh local produce including jams, sauces, honey, bakery items and
plenty more. Stroll in the open air, chat with the farmers and producers, and even get
advice on best cooking methods.
The Grafton Farmers Market provides a great opportunity for Clarence Valley farmers
and fresh food producers to sell farm-origin and associated value-added processed
food products directly to local customers while giving you an opportunity to talk directly
to them about their produce and their farming methods.
The Market show cases locally grown fruit, vegetables, eggs, fish, flowers etc plus

The NSW Land and Water Commissioner and representatives of the NSW office of
Coal Seam Gas and Department of Primary Industries (DPI Water).
This special briefing will provide you with facts on the baseline water data project that
has been completed for the Clarence Moreton Basin, the NSW Gas Plan and
information to address concerns that have been raised around well-integrity in coal
seam gas activities.

The Lawrence ferry crossing the Clarence River at Rutland Street, Lawrence this ferry shuttles between

Chris Timmins – Artists for the month of February, 2015.
An Accomplished teacher of textiles, Chris Timmins has influenced the development of many quilt makers.
She is well known for her brilliant Bargello Designs that entice the eye. These designs have been published in
Patchwork magazines and hundreds of quilts have been made in Australia and overseas
Patchwork and quilting have been her passion and now she teaches both school students and adults all over
NSW. She has been invited back to Fiji after very successful trips in the past.
Twisted Bargello was the start of her journey to designing, tutoring and selling patterns. Twisted Bargello is one
of Chris’s most popular patterns, selling especially well in the USA and Canada.
Chris has designed many more stunning designs, Haylie’s Comet, Jacaranda Sky and Lightning Strikes. She is
now branching out into new designs called Take 6 and turning the latest craze “Jelly Rolls” into exciting quilts.
As well as quilting Chris enjoys producing exciting fabrics using a chemically safe dyeing technique using
Genesis Dyes. These fabrics are then used in quilting, wall hangings and cushions.
Chris is a retired Teacher after 34 years, including 27 at the Grafton High School, it was difficult to leave all the
wonderful students. She plans to continue to teach them after school, the new students coming through are
excited about learning the art of quilt making, displaying their quilts in competitions and hopefully taking home
awards. Chris’s students have won sewing machines in Sydney, which makes 38 plus machines won by school
students over the last 20 plus years in the Clarence Valley.
Come along to the Clarence River Visitor Information Centre at South Grafton and view just a few of the quilts
she has designed and created.

Artist team up for Artist of the month – Rhondella Hyde and Karl Rubli
Rhondella Hyde is one of two featured Artists at Ferry Park Gallery, Maclean during the month of February.
Works include acrylic painting, graphite pen & ink drawing and includes several new inspiring and colourful
abstracts. Rhondella is the winner of many art awards throughout the Clarence Valley, including Grand
Champion 3 times at the Jacaranda Art Exhibition. This year Rhondella will commence art classes at Ferry Park
Gallery, details of which can be found on the website at ferrypark.org.
The other featured artist is Karl Rubli, Karl has been interested in art all his life. Drawing and painting were
hobbies in his young years. Then he had a passion for design by profession and for pleasure. Later on his very
busy working life stopped him partly from drawing, sculpturing and carving.
A lifelong dream came true when he and his wife retired from Switzerland to Australia in 2005. He was attracted
and fascinated by the Clarence Region.
At once he began to carve in Hebel and wood. It is great to do carving and sculpturing for pleasure, he says.
“There is something magical in timber. It’s about appreciation of wood. And if there are defects and irritation
well, they are of natural beauty and charm”.
Karl tries to keep his hand carved forms simple, mostly stylized or abstract to let the brain make up the
completion. Each and every piece is unique. Karl does not work from plans and sometimes not even from
sketches as he likes to design his works entirely in his mind.
“I’m surrounded by outstanding art every day fabulous nature…with all its wonder and energy”.
This duel exhibition is well worth a visit to experience firsthand the beauty in the creations of Rhondella and

Traversing Antarctica: The Australian Experience marks the 100th anniversary of the 1911 – 1914 Australasian
Antarctic Expedition (AAE), the first Australian led and funded expedition to Antarctica and the start of our
involvement as a nation with this continent. The exhibition will enable Australians to develop a greater
understanding of the significant role that Australia continues to play in the exploration and care of Antarctic and
Antarctica’s historical, cultural and scientific value to Australia.
Traversing Antarctica brings together the people, documents, objects, maps, animals and images that make up
the fascinating story of Australia in Antarctica. The diversity of material, much of which is previously unseen,
offers visitors multiple access points to the cultural material of Antarctica. From the iconic material of the AAE to
intriguing official letters stunning film footage and hands-on activities the exhibition is designed to draw visitors
into Antarctica and inspire them to explore further.

Charles Condor The Lithographs – Prentice West.
Exhibition from 12th February to 22nd March, 2015.
This exhibition presents a series of lithographic prints created by the enigmatic English born artist Charles
Condor, who was a key member of the Heidelberg School of Australian Impressionism. The subjects of these
fine lithographs are drawn from Balzac and the bohemian tales of Henri Merger. On display are the Balzac set
of lithographs created from 1899 until 1906, invitation cards, allegorical bohemian scenes and a collection of
books.
Abstract Wonder – SCU Graduating Students – Loft.

Abstract Wonder showcases the work of 2014 Southern Cross University (SCU) graduates Dan McDonnell,

Gallery exhibition showcases the best of the Clarence
An exhibition that explores iconic scenes, birdlife, flora and atmospheric interpretations of the Clarence Valley,
is on display at the Grafton Regional Gallery.
The exhibition, Summer in the Clarence, features the work of Grafton Art Club Members paintings and
photographs. As a long-standing organisation with a strong member base, the Grafton Art Club continues to
grow. The club offers a wide range of recreational and educational activities in varied mediums throughout the
year.
Whether it’s a beach scene, a river scene, rural life or works depicting people enjoying summertime activities,
the images are created through the experience and lifestyle of the artists. In this way the fresh and colourful
artworks capture the essence and mood of life in valley.
The artworks are a small representation of the many artists who are members of the art club.
When you walk through the exhibition it’s good to see new artists now part of this long-standing art club.
Presenting a selection of what the art club artists are creating is a great way to acknowledge the wonderful work
by the people involved in the Grafton Art Club.

Travelling from the North to Maclean. Turn right off the Pacific Highway at the Ferry Park
Complex. Continue on this road for approximately 500 metres and take the brooms Head
turnoff. This is a right turn. Follow this road up the hill and down under the highway until
you reach at Y intersection. At the Y intersection take the street to the left and follow this
road past the industrial estate. After the industrial estate the road turns sharply to the left.
This is where Gardiners Road approximately 800 metres and you will see our Motocross
Sign (Race Days Only). Turn right into the gravel road veer right at the top of the track.
There are usually signs out on race days to follow.
Travelling from the South to Maclean. Turn left off the Pacific Highway at the Ferry Park
Complex and follow the instructions above.

Maclean District Historical Society’s, Corner Wharf and Grafton Streets, Maclean is
launching their latest publication “From Cane Fields to Battlefields” by Carolyn Cameron
Starting at 10.00am.
“From Cane Fields to Battlefields” is a commemoration of the involvement of the Lower
Clarence in WWI.
Author Carolyn Cameron said that like most places in Australia in world War One, the Lower
Clarence (which we have, for convenience sake, taken as from Brushgrove, Cowper, Lower
Southgate and Lawrence down to Yamba, encompassing both sides of the river and its
arms), was not slow in providing recruits.
The impact this made on the area and the toll this took on both soldier and family is
immeasurable.
The book documents the course of the war as seen through the eyes of local soldiers and
their families at home, using local newspaper articles, letters, diaries and other ephemera
collected by the returned soldiers and also by the loved ones of those who did not return.
Around 830 names have been collected although it may not be the completed list of those
who served.
Researchers who helped with the book, tried to collect as much information as they could
about anyone who was born, worked lived or had any family connection with the Lower
Clarence, during that time.
In the electoral roll for that period, a number of approximately 3,500 names are recorded
(including women).
Assuming one third of those enrolled were women, and this is a very conservative figure,

this means almost one third of the available men in our area enlisted.

After their inaugural and very successful An Afternoon at The Proms Concert at the
Saraton in October 2014, The Clarence Valley Orchestra & Chorus conducted by Greg
Butcher performs a tribute concert commemorating 100 Years since WW1. You will hear a
special War Requiem Allies of War written for orchestra and chorus by Australian
Composer Greg Butcher, in honour of the Volunteers who signed up for War Service during
WW1 from the Clarence Valley.
This performance will also commemorate 70 years since the end of WW2, with a tribute to
the entertainers of the Concert Parties who played an important role in entertaining the
troops and keeping up morale. A variety of musical medleys from the songs of Vera Lyn &
Marlene Dietrich to the big band sounds of Glen Miller and the Andrews Sisters to name a
few.
A concert not to miss and a salute to all who have served in the Defence Forces.

24th Tour de Woodford – Sporting Event will be held at the Brushgrove Recreational Triangle and
Woodford Island.
The Rotary Club of Maclean began The Tour de Woodford in 2008 as a way of bringing the
community of the Clarence Valley together in a way that gave not only families and
individuals the opportunity to have a great time together, but encourage the more
competitive rider to pace themselves against their fellow cyclist on one of two open road

course, 25k or 45k Brushgrove (Recreational Triangle park), has proved to be a popular
not only for the riders and their families, but also the residence of Brushgrove-Cowper to
cheer on the riders at the mass start. The riders come from across the Valley and beyond,
with large groups leaving Grafton, Yamba and Maclean early in the morning for the ride to
Brushgrove to support this charity event. No matter which course you are on there are
Marshals, support and direction signage along the way, the main thing to remember is that
it is an open road event, therefore all road rules apply. Please follow marshal directions
and have a safe and wonderful Tour de Woodford.
