And ‘Good Riddance’ to the month of February! As of your Breakfast Meeting on Sunday, there are only Twenty days left until the first day of spring. ‘Yee Haw’. We did have quite the month though. Dinner and a Movie was a great night out. Dinner at Turtle Jacks followed by American Sniper (at least two of us went to this while the girls went to see Fifty Shades). The following Sunday, Chapter Y made an official Chapter visit to Chapter M in Hamilton. What a showing this was. Twenty Chapter Y Participants took part in the Breakfast Meeting. All in all, we think the meeting went very well. Thanks to all of you that came out on Sunday morning. Your support was just ‘Totally Awesome’. While we were there, we reacquired the Travelling Trophy. We will not be hanging on to this too long as we do believe we will be taking it on our next Breakfast Meeting Adventure. Last week a few of us went to a Camp Bucko fundraiser at Buffalo Wild Wings in Mississauga. Here, there were Campers from the camp, Firefighters and Police Officers, as well as us from Chapter Y. It was a fun evening highlighted by the Suicide Wing eating contest. Fifteen percent of every bill was donated to Camp BUCKO. They will be having another fundraiser that we will be able to attend. The month of March will be another busy one. Rider Education, Social event, and another Chapter visit on the 22nd to Chapter G, The Niagara Guardian Wings in Welland. At the next Breakfast Meeting, on the 1st of March, Chapter Y will have two Special Guests visiting. They are the Region K Couple of the Year for 2014/2015, from Chapter F, Wings in the Capital (Orleans), Francois and Chantal Seguin from Curran, Ontario. Just think, we may be riding after the next breakfast. The registration forms are now available for Rendezvous. Rendezvous is in Woodstock, Ont. this year. That’s only an hour away. Teresa and I will be competing as your Couple of the Year at Rendezvous. Hope to see you all there. Mark and Teresa Fleury Chapter Directors MARCH 2015 FRIENDS FOR FUN, SAFETY AND KNOWLEDGE Page 2 A View from the Rear It’s been another busy month for the Chapter and there’s no sign of letting up. We had a Dinner and Movie night, which I’ll let Ann fill you in on the details. Wednesday February 18th, after receiving short notice of the event, 7 of us were able to make it to the Camp BUCKO charity event at Buffalo Wild Wings in Mississauga. It turned out to be a great time with lots of people there who were Campers, Fire Fighters, Police, and supporters like us. There were door prizes and a Wing eating contest. A portion of the revenue that night was donated to the camp by Buffalo Wild Wings. We have let the proper people know to give us advance notice of the event next year so we can show up with a much larger crowd of supporters. While we were there a father of a camper from BUCKO came up to us and thanked Chapter Y for all our support. He took a picture of us along with the kind words below. First, let me say that as the parent of a BUCKO camper I'd like to thank you for all that you have done for the kids. It is very much appreciated. Please find attached the photo that I took of your group at the fundraiser tonight at Buffalo Wild Wings. Thank you so much for coming. Sincerely, Roy Janke. MARCH 2015 FRIENDS FOR FUN, SAFETY AND KNOWLEDGE Page 3 Several years ago Sue and I would drop off donated craft supplies for the camp to a lady in Milton whose parents were deeply involved with Camp BUCKO. It wasn’t until our visit to Chapter ON-M on Sunday that the penny dropped. The lady that we left the supplies with was none other than Laurie Hatton. David and Laurie Hatton are CDs of Chapter ON-M. Sorry Laurie that we didn’t clue in sooner. Our visit to Chapter ON-M’s breakfast last Sunday was nothing short of a complete success. 22 of us attended, with around an equal number from M, that made for a full hall of good friends having a great time. We hope Chapter M will return the favour soon and come and visit us. Birkdale Place Seniors Residence in Milton has turned out to be a great place for us to hold our Rider Ed seminars. We get the use of the Theatre Room for no charge, and lunch and beverages provided at a very reasonable cost. Over the past couple of weeks Birkdale has run into some bad luck which has led to the cancellation of some of our seminars. First there was the Norovirus, which forced them to lock down the building until several residents could recover. One of them was my Mom who had a very rough time with it. There wasn’t much I could do to help, but the staff there went out of their way to look after her. If that wasn’t enough, last Saturday a water main burst in the front lobby which led to major damage to the lobby area and basement where we hold our meetings. We wish Birkdale a speedy recovery with their repairs and getting back to normal business. Bob & Sue Henshaw Assistant Chapter Directors The Gathering Post Hi everyone! Another month has come and gone, and we are getting closer to our riding season --- hopefully. Our last social event was dinner at Turtle Jacks followed by a movie. It was another wonderful night with excellent people. Our next social event will be GAMES NIGHT AND FINGER FOOD at Fran's and Arie's, on Saturday, March 14th at 7:00pm. Please sign up --- it will be lots of fun Ann Eastman Social Committee Coordinator MARCH 2015 FRIENDS FOR FUN, SAFETY AND KNOWLEDGE Page 4 From the Chalkboard Well, our luck hasn’t been very good lately at Birkdale Place. On February 14th, we had to cancel the Seminar Presenters Course as the Norwalk Virus was running around the facility. The next two Seminar Days have been cancelled also. Seems a water main broke, destroyed the lobby and flooded the basement where we hold the Seminars. These dates will be rescheduled once they have the facility up and running. Don’t forget, there will be a Medic First Aid/CPR/AED Course coming up at the end of April. The date is still to be determined. We are also getting close to booking the dates for the PLP’s (2) and ARC (2 or3). Watch for these dates on the Website. It’s time to think about getting the bike ready to go. Here is your official check-list to optimize the maintenance and performance of your favorite ride. Mark and Teresa Fleury Chapter Educators Get ready! I have had enough of winter! I don’t want to let too many secrets out, but we are looking at a great year of rides. This year is going to ROCK, with rides all through Ontario. Just a reminder: Rendezvous is July 24 – 25 – 26. I would like to see a great turnout from Chapter ON-Y. Speaking of rides, our first Chapter ride is scheduled for 16 May 2015. The Chapter ON-Y ride is looking awesome! Thanks to all that gave some input and ideas of places to go and things to do. When we return from this ride, you will be amazed at how many things we were able to do in a two week time frame. DON’T BE A STRANGER…COME OUT AND HAVE FUN!!!! Gary and Henny McDermott Ride Committee Coordinators MARCH 2015 FRIENDS FOR FUN, SAFETY AND KNOWLEDGE Page 9 WOW! The website is a smash! Thanks to all those that view, list, and search on the site. I hope most of you had a chance to check out the scrapbook section. There are five scrapbooks in the section, and you might get a chuckle. The private section has been changed with seven subdirectories and an event calendar. The event calendar is in a PDF format that can be downloaded to your computer. All Mark & Teresa’s Rider Education Seminars with dates, signup sheets, and location is the first section, followed by Chapter “Y” Social Events. Way to go Ann Eastman and team for putting together what looks like an exciting year of events full of fun. The next section is one I hold dear: Chapter “Y” Rides. You can sign up and see all the rides which have been put together for the year. Region “K” Rides is next, with Rendezvous, then the National Rides “Reno Rendezvous” & “Wind Ding”. The final section is the Breakfast Runs. Being such a social chapter and wanting to visit our fellow GWRRA chapters to meet, greet and socialize over breakfast, we have listed all the chapters we will be visiting this year. Don’t forget to check the website twice a week to keep up with any changes. Our Chapter FB went viral with #216 fabulous friends from all around the world. If you have not yet been to the FB site, you do not know what you are missing. From the United States GWRRA groups, we would like to welcome to our FB page Chapter La-K (Metairie, Louisiana), GWRRA Mississippi Chapter C, GWRRA Louisiana District Eastpointe, Michigan, and GWRRA Indiana District. We would also like to welcome all your members that have joined our FB individually. From Europe, we would like to welcome Gold Wing Greece, Wupper Winger and Goldwing Misfits. I bet we will all be using the FB translator this summer… This is an excellent social media meeting place for our members and members from other chapters. The interaction between all of us is endless. Let’s have a great year and take advantage of FB to see what’s happening across the border. Come on to the FB page and have some fun. Thank You Gary McDermott Webmaster MARCH 2015 FRIENDS FOR FUN, SAFETY AND KNOWLEDGE Page 10 A big HELLO from your Winter Texans: It’s hard to believe that it’s the 26th and we leave here on the 15th of March. Seems like yesterday we got here, which was in fact the 15th of December. On the way south we spent several days in Huntsville, Alabama. Toured some of the old homes there, went to the train museum, the train depot, the war museum, as well as camping at the Space Centre in town. New sign for the trailer: From there we travelled to New Orleans, really Sidell, which is about 20 minutes north of New Orleans, cost of campsite was 1/3 of what they wanted in New Orleans. Toured the downtown area and bought a 3-day bus tour pass, a must to see the sites including walking tours. New Orleans is definitely a younger person’s venue than us senior people, the place really doesn’t start hopping until after dark and on into the wee hours of the night. Here at Tropic Winds Resort we have so much to do and so little time to do it. Mary is involved in a crafts class, Euchre, Texas Hold’em, and ladies tea, while my time is spent golfing and wood-working (Sargent Preston is one of my attempts at wood working). Mary and I both enjoy pickleball and being a 1st responder (we each spend 1 day a Sargent Preston week remaining on site with a pager should a medical emergency occur), as well as going to information seminars at Valley Baptist Hospital and our own 1st responders auction to raise money to purchase needed equipment and medical supplies. We both enjoy reading, and Mary does knitting, and I do rug hooking when the weather turns cold and windy and we feel we would rather stay in. We have met so many new friends and had time to rekindle old relationships. It has been so warm down here that we need to put two ice cubes into our happy hour drinks instead of one like last year. Before you know it, we’ll be back home having breakfast with our favourite GWRRA Chapter. Keep warm and give your motorcycle a hug!
