This particular Sunday of the Season always gave the stories of Abraham from the Book of Genesis and the Transfiguration of Jesus in the Gospels as points for our Lenten reflection. In today’s readings, both stories involved Father and son scenes: Abraham and Isaac and the voice of God the Father and Jesus, God the Son. Both stories took place on a mountain: Mt. Moriah for Abraham and Mt. Tabor for Jesus. For ancient Israel, the mountain is where you encounter God. It is a place of religious experience. That our stories today were set on a mountain highlights the mystical dimension in our proclamation of the Word. This weekend, we are given an extraordinary glimpse into the faith & character of Abraham. The command to kill his son Isaac, his only child, born to him in old age, was beyond his comprehension. The Bible does not describe to us the anguish of Abraham over this divine imperative but it is easy to imagine him agonizing and struggling over this seemingly absurd command. Earlier, he was promised by the same God that he would be father of many nations. How was this promise to be fulfilled, if not through his son, Isaac? He was being asked to sacrifice the thing that meant the whole world to him and the very foundation on which his faith stood. But Abraham’s faith and trust in God proved greater than anything in the world. He carried out the divine command. God must be obeyed at all cost. As he raised the knife to slaughter his son, the Angel of the Lord stopped him. His hand was stayed, and Isaac’s life was spared. Abraham is rightfully called the father of faith. His faith is an ultimate example to all of us to emulate. He always took God at his word even when his faith was being tested beyond all limits. Our Gospel gives us the story of the Transfiguration, a mystical experience for the apostles who were present at this amazing event. The apostles were completely overcome when given a glimpse of Christ in all His glory and when it was revealed to them who their Master was: “This is my beloved son, listen to Him.” It was a blessed happening to sustain them in the coming darkness of Gethsemane, when they would witness Christ in agony. Moments of joy when everything fits together are few and far between. The apostles witnessed for themselves what Abraham only intuited in faith, the moment of glory that empowered him to be willing to sacrifice his only son. The story of Abraham sacrificing his beloved son Isaac prepared us for the greatest story ever told: God the Father gave us His beloved Son as a sacrifice. What Abraham was halted from doing is what the heavenly Father carried out for our sake. The anguish and struggle of Abraham can give us an insight into the interior life of God the Father when He gave His only Son, sacrificing that person that meant everything to Him. Lent provides us with an excellent opportunity to ponder on this greatest act of love performed on our behalf. That God the Father found us worthy of the life of His beloved Son should reduce us to silence. Thank you, Father, for your greatest love. May your mercy be on us always. Sincerely Yours In Christ, Fr. Burt Absalon, Pastor !"|"6W0DU\3DULVKĊ:RRGVWRFN,OOLQRLV" :KRLV:KR 5HDGLQJVIRUWKH:HHN 2I0DUFK ! At the time our church was undergoing renovations. She remembers walking up the front stairs and peering in the windows of the doors. What she found (even with the scaffolding up) was her home church. She said, “The beauty and grace of St. Mary surrounded me, even from outside the doors.” Jo Ann started out working with a group of counters, a wonderful group of four women who counted the Sunday collection once a month. When a position for bookkeeper opened up about 2 1/2 years ago, she was offered the job. Jo Ann said, “I had been doing bookkeeping work for over 30 years, but I wasn’t sure that I wanted to go back to ’work’.” After prayerful consideration, she said yes. It was one of the best decisions she ever made. She learned not only new computer applications but new things about Catholicism! She enjoys being able to go into the church daily to pray. And here, it is a given that God and family are first, so consideration of time needed to spend with her two youngest sons, Joel and Zach, is freely given. She feels that her youngest sons are both her blessings and her challenges, as all children can be. She is so grateful to be able to be there for her family and to work with our priests and staff at St. Mary. In addition to Joel and Zach, Jo Ann has two older children, Petrina and Michael. Petrina graduated suma cum laude from St. Mary College in South Bend, IN. Michael currently holds the rank of major in the Army. Jo Ann has been married to her husband, Butch, for almost 28 years. They had their marriage blessed in the Catholic faith here at St. Mary on their 25th anniversary, by Msgr. Aaron Brodeski. Jo Ann and Butch also have three grandchildren, Lauren, Elizabeth and Brendan. Please share some of your own stories! Email them to [email protected]. We can print your story anonymously if you want.
