Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This last Sunday of January marks the beginning of our Catholic School Week (CSW) celebration.
As I mentioned in my last week’s letter, the theme for this year’s CSW is Catholic Schools:
Communities of Faith. Academics. Service. Today and all through the week, all Catholic School
communities across the US are engaging the student body in many activities in line with this
year’s theme.
It is the self understanding of the Mother Church that education is central to the mission
entrusted to her by the Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord mandated His disciples to go proclaim the
Gospel and teach all the nations. (Cf Mt 28:16-20). The mission of the Lord continues up to
today through the Church’s work of ministry in bringing glad tidings to the poor, in feeding the
hungry, and in proclaiming liberty to captives. The Lord came so that from death and sin we may
be set free. But sin in the theological sense does not refer primarily to the bad things we do or to
good things we fail to do, but to the human condition that leads us to committing those things.
This condition takes on many forms and one of the most confining and crippling among them is
ignorance. Ignorance is not bliss. It is in a sense, a form of captivity. Thus, education sets the
person free from the bondage of ignorance. That is why the Church sees education as a sacred
task, a ministry that is part of the proclamation of the Good News. It is, in other words,
evangelization.
The purpose of evangelization, of course, is conversion. Anyone can be free from ignorance and
be highly educated without being transformed into a person of God. Catholic education therefore
must not only inform the mind but must form the heart so that transformation of the total person
into becoming disciples of the Lord can take place. Catholic education aims to help young
persons develop their gifts, intellects, talents, and capabilities so that they can become the best
version of themselves. St. Ireneus said: “The glory of God is human being fully alive.” To become
the best we can be is the best way to give God honor and glory, especially when our best is
expressed in putting our gifts and abilities in His service. Catholic education, without a doubt,
prepares young people for life. But it is the preparation for the life to come that matters the
most. Thus the emphasis on developing virtues and on growing in holiness is to be expected.
Catholic education makes accessible to students the participation in the liturgy and the
sacraments, which are powerful forces for the development of personal sanctity.
Let us celebrate CSW and pray for St. Mary Catholic School at Woodstock, IL. Let us pray for all
our students, teachers, staff and administrators that together we may remain faithful to the
tenets of Catholic education. As we join with almost 7,000 Catholic Schools across the Nation in
celebrating CSW 2015 let us together thank the Lord for the blessing of Catholic education not
only to us Catholics but to the US as a nation. For the past 300 years, Catholic education has
produced citizens who have accomplished many great things for the nation. It is because they
are well formed in the ways of Christian faith and have the experience of an excellent education
in the Catholic school. Happy Catholic School Week!

Lent is coming up quickly. An anonymous parishioner
shares this timely story:
I was raised Catholic, went to Catholic school, and sent
my children to Catholic School. One year, I was with my
kids as they prayed the Stations of the Cross at school. I
hadn’t done that since I was in grade school myself, so it
was like opening a time capsule.

I remembered that it was agony to go through the Stations as a kid. It wasn’t just kneeling for a long time in
those scratchy blue wool uniforms, and it wasn’t just the
plodding organ playing mournful songs. I also remembered emotions. During some stations, I would try to
think positively. For example, Jesus goes before Pontius
Pilate and who cares what Pilate thinks of Jesus anyway.
That can’t hurt Jesus’ feelings too much. Whew. He
(and I) survived one station. Some were not so bad,
such as Veronica wiping Jesus’ face. Thank God somebody was nice to Jesus. I would hope that would be me.
But some stations were just awful. Jesus is scourged.
Jesus falls the first time. Then He falls again. And again.
It doesn’t get any better after that. I felt like, why are we
dwelling on this for what seems like an eternity?
Our teachers reminded us that our sins nailed Jesus to
the cross. Ugh. I felt torn. Even though I knew my sins
added to Jesus’ suffering, I also knew that I would fight
with my brothers and sisters again, probably that same
afternoon. How could I live with myself?
After opening this little time capsule, I realized a subtle
way I had responded to the Stations as a kid. Without
knowing it, I had resolved to keep my sins small, to just
carry them myself.
But by this time, I was in my late forties. I was exhausted from carrying my sins around, however small.
And the positive accomplishments in my life were not
amounting to as much as I had hoped. I wasn’t sure
they were going to balance out the resentments and the
anger that was piling up in my heart. But I didn’t want to
lay those stripes on Jesus. It is just so unfair. He is
sinless, perfect and loving; how could I do that to Him?
Along the way, I had learned Jesus is hurt if we don’t give
Him our sins. If I don’t give Jesus my sins, then His agony was for nothing. In trying to carry my sins myself, I
rob Jesus of His purpose. If I lay my sins on Jesus, I give
Him a victory. It actually consoles Jesus if I give Him my
sins because He accomplishes what He came for.
I can’t remember if this is the precise event that brought
me back to Confession, but even now, Jesus and I go
back and forth about this as I prepare to meet Him in the
confessional. In giving my sins to Jesus, I allow Him to
accomplish His purpose. And to accomplish one’s purpose in life is to have joy.

On January 25, 7 pm concert and 6 pm
dessert bar & bake sale. Community
concert is at Grace Lutheran Church. Admission is $5. All proceeds will support the people
in need in Woodstock and Wonder Lake. 13.6% of
our neighbors are living below the poverty line. In
the last two years, WACM has provided: $53,000 in
food; $41,000 in clothing, medicine, utilities, transportation, etc; assistance for 120 children and 111
adults per month.
Thank you to those people who contributed to the
day-time lunch this past Christmas Day. It always
helps having volunteers willing to make lunches and
help serve. The day-time drop in shelter is in Woodstock every Thursday. It provides a safe, warm place
for those who don’t have homes of their own. They
provide lunch weekly as well.

Small group studies are not only a
great way to grow in your faith, but
they allow you to get to know other
parishioners and feel a sense of belonging in our parish. If you have
never tried a small group
study, check out these two opportunities. Catholicism is a 10 week
study presented by Fr. Robert Barron. This study will
begin the first week in February. Fr. Barron created
this groundbreaking study as a thematic presentation of what Catholics believe and why, so all adults
can come to a deeper understanding of the Catholic
Faith. Not a video lecture, Church history, or scripture study, this engaging and interesting formational program uses the art, music, architecture,
literature and all the treasures of the Catholic tradition to illuminate the timeless teachings of
the Church. Consoling the Heart of Jesus presented by Fr. Michael Gaitley explores the topic of Divine Mercy.
This study will start the week of
January 19 and conclude the week
before Divine Mercy Sunday. We
