A Day at the
St. Francis Soup Kitchen

I’ve always wondered how it felt like to
serve the needy. I’ve
been behind the scenes
at Open Hand before but
have never actually interacted with those who are
in need. This past Saturday, I was able to do just
that. The Confirmation
candidates went on a trip
together to the St. Francis Soup Kitchen in
downtown Atlanta. Not
only did we help prepare
the food but also personally served the hungry
there. It was definitely a
lot of fun but I also no-
ticed a few things about
the people we met. Some
of the guests laughed
and joked around with
each other teasing their
friends and telling stories
in spite of their dismal
situation. There was a
spirit of compassion for
others in that place and I
know Jesus was working
through us in helping
these people.
I loved working in
the soup kitchen. I realized how blessed we are
and how God has provided for us in His mercy. I
thought of how Jesus
Himself fed those who
were in need and for the
first time, I was able to go
out and do the same. In a
few months, my classmates and I will receive
the Sacrament of Confirmation and be
sent out into the
world to be true
followers of
Christ. I believe
working in the
St. Francis
Soup Kitchen
was an excellent first step.

My Dear Brothers, Sisters and Children,
Once again we have begun
our Lenten Journey. It is a special
time of growth and conversion. The
primary purpose of Lent is spiritual
preparation for the celebration of Jesus’ death and resurrection. The
Church tries to achieve this goal by
leading her children to metanoia or
“repentance” through the reordering
their priorities and reorienting their
values, ideals and ambition. This
goal is realized through fasting, prayer and self-control and works of charity. During this time of lent we are
walking with Christ in the desert path
of purification and conversion. It is
not a matter of routine or simple repetition of practices, it is a matter of
love, a matter of self abnegation for
the love of God and the service of
our fellow men and women. We are
aware that the Lord loves us to the
end. We also know that we are in
need of His love. However, there are
things in our lives that need to
change in order to experience His
love. That is why we need to take
Lent seriously by denying our unhealthy passions to a greater degree.
"Return to me with all your
heart".(Joel 2:12) The prophet insists

Lent Is a Time for
Renewal and Growth
on inner conversion. Pope Francis in
his Ash Wednesday homily said," To
return to the Lord with all [one’s]
heart, means taking the path of a
conversion that is neither superficial
nor transient, but is a spiritual journey that reaches the deepest place
of our self.” The heart, in fact, is the
seat of our sentiments, the center in
which our decisions and our attitudes
mature. That, “Return to me with all
your heart,” involving not only individuals, but also extending to the communities, is a summons an address
to all. “Gather the people. Sanctify
the congregation; assemble the elders; gather the children, even nursing infants. Let the bridegroom leave
his room, and the bride her chamber". (Joel 2:16) The prophet dwells
particularly on the prayers of priests,
noting that their prayer should be accompanied by tears. We will do well
to ask at the beginning of this Lent
for the gift of tears, so as to make
our prayer and our journey of conversion ever more authentic and without
hypocrisy". (Excerpt from Pope Francis's Ash Wednesday Homily).
A few suggestions for our parish
family:

2. Participate in the Lenten Retreat
with love for the Word of God and
make a fruitful confession which will
make you a new person, ready to
win the world for the Lord.
3. Pray the Rosary daily on your way
to or from work, offering particularly
the Sorrowful Mysteries for the end
of abortion and persecution of Christians in the world.
4. In this family year, make a special
effort to ask your spouse about how
you can better help him/her and do
the same with your children.
5. Make a decision to stop gossip
and to focus on the goodness of
each other to build a healthy community.
6. Resolve to reconcile with family,
relatives and estranged friends.
7. Set aside some money we might
spend on ourselves for meals, entertainments or clothes and giving it to
an organization which takes care of
the less fortunate in our society.
