The Gregorian March 1, 2015 Second Sunday of Lent Page 2 March 1, 2015 St. Gregory the Great Mission Statement St. Gregory the Great is a Catholic Church made up of people of many different ages, talents, and cultural backgrounds. We are an urban faith community with a small town feel of welcome and hospitality. Motivated by our baptismal calling, we accept our duty to embody the presence of Jesus Christ in the world and to take up the mission he entrusted to us by our word and example. We glorify God through support and service of our time, talent, and treasure to our church and to the larger community in which we live. FIRST FRIDAY EUCHARISTIC ADORATION On Friday, March 6, there will be Eucharistic Adoration in Church from 9a.m. until 4p.m. The day will end with Benediction at 4p.m. Please consider spending time in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament as a way of entering more deeply into the Lenten discipline of prayer. Please note, there will be no First Friday adoration on Good Friday. Please enter and leave the Church via the North courtyard ramp entrance. LENTEN WRIST BANDS In case you didn’t receive one last weekend, we ask that you pick up as you leave Church a purple wrist band with the letters L.E.G.S. printed on it. These letters refer to the four themes found in the book Life’s Greatest Lesson by Allen Hunt that was distributed to all parishioners at Christmas. The themes are: Love all you can. Earn all you can. Give all you can. Save all you can. During Lent we ask you to wear this wrist band as a reminder for you to put into practice these four important spiritual tasks. The wrist bands can be found in baskets located on the Usher’s Tables and at the North Courtyard Ramp entrance. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY Lent is a call not just to “give up something” but more important to “give something for the poor.” Wherever you live in the parish, there are poor families that live within walking distance of your home. When in need they ring the Parish Center door bell. They are, in effect, ringing your doorbell. Your almsgiving in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box will help the poor to celebrate the grace of God’s love this Easter. MINISTRY OF THE WEEK – SATURDAY SCHOOL OF RELIGION The Saturday School of Religion provides volunteers with an opportunity to serve as Catechists to children in grades 1 through 8. They seek to teach their students the basics of our Catholic faith, prepare them to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation, First Communion, and Confirmation, and to encourage them to practice their faith in an active, conscious, and mature way. Volunteers are also needed as teacher and staff aides. Classes are held on Saturday mornings from 10-12:00 Noon. in the Gym classrooms from September through May. The contact person for the Saturday School of Religion is Sr. Regina De Vitto, 773-561-3546. LIFE’S GREATEST LESSON - EARN ALL YOU CAN The second major theme that is found in our Christmas book Life’s Greatest Lesson by Allen Hunt is Earn All You Can. In the book, Grandma Lavish has a great talent for baking, and she puts it to use by baking strawberry cakes and cupcakes. She eventually starts her own business and ships strawberry cakes and cupcakes to people around the country. She believed that God had blessed her with a talent for baking, and she decided to use that talent to earn as much as she could so that she could help people in need. She based her belief on the parable of the master who gave talents to three of his servants and then went away on a journey. Two of the three invested their talents wisely and returned the talents to their master with interest on his return. One servant buried his talent and simply returned it to his master on his return. Grandma Lavish says: “God already made it clear he wants me to love people as much as I can. And one of the ways I can do that is by using the money I make with the abilities he has given me just like the servants in the parable. He loves me and gives me gifts, and I can love people by giving the results of those gifts to them. That means I’m using his investments in me in the right way.” God has blessed all of us with time, unique talents and treasure. This Lent ask yourself if you are using your unique talents and gifts, God’s investment in you, in the right way. How might God be inviting you to further develop your unique talents and gifts in new and creative ways to help other people, especially those experiencing great need. To Earn As Much As We Can refers to more than just making money. It also refers to investing in our own personal growth and development in a way that allows us to be the best version of ourselves that God has created us to be and that allows us to return that investment to God by sharing our time, talent and treasure with others. Thank you for the ways in which you have developed your talents and gifts to Earn As Much As You Can, to become the best version of yourselves. Next week, I will look at what it means to Give As Much As You Can, the third letter in the L.E.G.S. bracelet that Grandma Lavish wore on her wrist. Last Sunday we distributed 400 purple L.E.G.S. bracelets at Mass. Wear it all during Lent to remind you to Love As Much As You Can; Earn As Much As You Can; Give As Much As You Can; and Save As Much As You Can. – Fr. Paul FISH FRY BAKERY CORNER Every year since the Fish Fry started we have had a great “Goodies Corner.” Your very good bakery goodies can be dropped off at the Parish Center after 2:00pm on Friday, March 6th, or better still bring them to the cafeteria when you come to the Fish Fry. Many thanks to all of you for making the “Goodie Corner” great for 12 years, and we are sure it will be great this year! YEAR OF SACRAMENTS—ONE WORD AT A TIME Pledge To pledge is to promise. And at the heart of the sacrament of Marriage are promises made and promises kept. Notice, however, that there is something very special about the pledging or promising that belongs to marriage. Usually, promises are about doing something or keeping something. In marriage, it is different. A man and a woman pledge and promise themselves. It couldn’t be more personal. They give not something but themselves to each other. Now we know how fragile our human pledges and promises can be. In the sacrament of Marriage, when a couple pledges themselves to each other, they wrap that promise in faith in God who will sustain the union and keep them faithful. Human pledges and promises are full of risks and unknowns. What makes them real and possible is a love that is more than human. It is God’s sustaining love.
