The Gregorian “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” August 10, 2014 Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 2 August10, 2014 St. Gregory the Great Mission Statement St. Gregory the Great is a Catholic Church made up of people of many different ages, talents, and cultural backgrounds. We are an urban faith community with a small town feel of welcome and hospitality. Motivated by our baptismal calling, we accept our duty to embody the presence of Jesus Christ in the world and to take up the mission he entrusted to us by our word and example. We glorify God through support and service of our time, talent, and treasure to our church and to the larger community in which we live. ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY In this Gospel, Jesus immediately stretched out his hand and caught Peter, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” Please help the Society of St. Vincent de Paul bring respite and hope To the elderly who are not able to find relief from the summer heat, and you will bring them faith and hope! Somehow, they make us different and never leave us the same as we were. Certain sacraments—Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders—mark and shape our identity forever. We receive these sacraments only once, and that is once and forever. They impart what is called a “sacramental character” marking us off as belonging to Jesus Christ in Baptism, sealed by the Holy Spirit in Confirmation, and conformed to Jesus Christ, the head and shepherd of the Church, in Holy Orders. The other sacraments mark us on our ongoing journey of Christian discipleship as sustained by the sacrifice of Jesus and our union with him (Eucharist), as forgiven sinners (Penance), as healed (Anointing of the Sick), and as effective signs of God’s love and life-giving power in the world (Matrimony). Whether clearly obvious or subtly present, whether intensely felt or quietly present, the sacraments do mark us as disciples of Jesus Christ. And we are enriched. INTERNATIONAL CHAMBER ARTISTS (ICA) VIOLIN ECHOES As the leaves turn color, echoes of summer remain, much as the echoes of the violin resound in International Chamber Artists’ kickoff concert program, which showcases new violinist Ellen McSweeney. Join ICA musicians on Sunday, September 7 at 3:00 PM at the Belden Stratford Hotel located at 2300 Lincoln Park West, Chicago, IL 60614. The program includes: Edvard Grieg – String Quartet in G minor, Op. 27 George Crumb – Eleven Echoes of Autumn, 1965 Béla Bartók – Contrasts You’ll have a second opportunity to hear the Violin Echoes concert on Sunday, September 14 at 4:00 PM at the St. Gregory the Great Church, Chicago, IL 60640. Experience the tour de force of a stormy, intense, and brooding atmosphere in Edvard Grieg’s String Quartet No. 1 in G Minor, his only surviving string quartet. In turn, the chilling and diverse timbres of George Crumb’s Eleven Echoes of Autumn, 1965 might remind one of the transience of seasons. A similar timbral array at once delights and transfixes the ear in Béla Bartók’s Contrasts, commissioned by the inimitable jazz clarinetist Benny Goodman. “We are thrilled to have the thoughtful and talented violinist Ellen McSweeney join us,” says Patrick Godon, ICA Founder and Artistic Director. “This Violin Echoes concert was designed with Ellen in mind, and with an intention to help transition from summer to fall – a beautiful season with colorful music. Come to this concert and welcome Ellen to ICA!” ICA concerts are free with a suggested donation of $15. For more information, visit www.ICAmusic.org. You can also like us on Facebook for photos and videos featuring, musicians, composers and fans. About ICA The International Chamber Artists, ICA, is a professional group of talented musicians under the artistic direction of pianist and conductor Patrick Godon from Chicago, IL. ICA seeks to present performances driven by the highest standards of artistic excellence while supporting communities and organizations through collaborations and financial support to promote the viability and growth of classical music audiences for the future. Page 4 August 10, 2014 SUMMER MISSIONARY APPEAL Next weekend, Aug. 16-17, Deacon John Battisto will speak at all our Masses about the missionary activities of the Scalabrini Fathers and Brothers. They were founded by Bishop John Baptist Scalabrini in 1887. They are a worldwide religious order of priests and brothers with the specific mission to assist in the spiritual and social needs of migrants and refugees. The Scalabrinians serve migrants of many different ethnic backgrounds. Their apostolate ranges from multiethnic parishes to centers for migration studies, from refugee camps to chaplaincy for seasonal workers, from radio and television programs to legal conferences. They serve migrants and refugees in thirty nations around the world. The Gospels reveal the compassion Jesus had for all people, foreigners as well as his own countrymen. He answered the question “Who is my neighbor?” with the parable of the Good Samaritan, showing that any person in need falls within the scope of responsibility. The Scalabrinians seek financial support to continue their ministry to migrants and refugees; to educate their seminarians; and to care for their aging and ill members. This appeal is part of the Mission Cooperative Plan of the Archdiocese of Chicago. A special collection will be taken up at all the Masses on their behalf. As always, we ask you to be as generous as possible. TAIZE PRAYER SERVICE There will be a Taizé Prayer service on Sunday, Aug. 10 at 4p.m. in Church. Taizé Prayer consists of gentle chanting in the Taizé style, a reading from scripture, general intercessions, and an opportunity for silent, reflective prayer in the presence of an icon. This month will feature an icon of Mary in honor of the Feast of the Assumption of Mary on August 15. If you have never experienced this style of prayer, please join us on Aug. 10.
