From Father Lawrence,
Reaching Out for Lent
Recently our parish staff had our
annual retreat. Unlike recent years
when we’d go to the Villa Maria
del Mar in Santa Cruz, this time
we went to the Meritage Resort in
Napa. The Meritage is a beautiful
resort at the southern end of
Highway 29. It was built by a
Catholic gentleman named Tim
Busch. Though the Meritage is
very plush, Mr. Busch also wanted
it to have a strong Catholic
identity. It has a statue of Mary
overlooking the pool and spa, and
even has a Catholic chapel right in
the lobby. We were able to get
special room rates because of our
status as a Catholic parish.
The retreat was a time for us to
really retreat from the busyness of
everyday parish life. We had time
to pray quietly together in the
chapel, to have daily Mass
together, to just enjoy each other’s
company and to do a good work
together. Our good work consisted
of going to Rainbow House, run
by Catholic Charities of the
Diocese of Santa Rosa. Rainbow
House is a transitional housing
development for single young
mothers age 18 to 24 who have
children under 5 years old. At
Rainbow House our staff was
introduced to the challenges that
these young single mothers face.
Many of them have been
traumatized by broken
relationships, bad habits, and/or
emotional or physical abuse.
Having their baby can be a
turnaround moment for them and
they come to Rainbow House to
start putting their lives back together. There they receive counseling, a stable environment and
job and life skills support. Rainbow House is proud that 80% of
the women in their program
“graduate” to independence with
regular employment and housing.
Our experience with Rainbow
House included an introduction to
their program and providing help
with their facilities. We helped
remove weeds from a garden plot
and planted seeds for their
vegetable garden. Others helped
bring bricks down from their attic
where a chimney had been
damaged during the August 24,
2014 6.0 earthquake. It was fun,
actually. We bonded as a staff in
an amazingly
joy-filled way by
just going something
good for someone in
need.
Lent is a time for
renewal: renewal of
our hearts, minds
and souls.
Opportunities for
renewal are available
through our Lenten
Retreat 33 Days to Morning
Glory, through the Stations of the
Cross in the church on Fridays at
7:00 PM, through our 40 Days for
Life prayer campaign for mothers
facing a difficult or unplanned
pregnancy, and through the St.
Raymond Lenten Challenge with
City Serve of the Tri-Valley;
where you can get involved
locally in a service project not
unlike the one we had at Rainbow
House. Contact the parish office
for more on the Lenten Challenge.
However you decide to practice
Lent, I pray it bring you renewal
and growth in faith, hope and
charity.
Sincerely in Christ,
Fr. Lawrence D’Anjou

Tuition Assistance Information
St. Raymond School encourages families to apply for
tuition assistance through Private School Aid Service
(PSAS) at the following link:
http://www.psas.org/7306.aspx.
PSAS provides St. Raymond School a list ranking the
need of applicants. It works with Financial Assistance
for Catholic Education (FACE), an Oakland Diocese
organization providing tuition assistance. If FACE
denies a request for assistance it is still possible to get
assistance from a fund at St. Raymond School that
receives support throughout the year from donors and
the parish. Another source of funding -The Basic Fund
– also supports students in Catholic Schools. However,
The Basic Fund only accepts applications for new
students. Once an award is granted, families continue to
receive an award. If you are looking for a Catholic
education for your child but need assistance, please
consider these options. For more information on
admissions and tuition assistance, please contact the
school office.
Dine Out at Rigatoni’s
On Tuesday, March 3rd, St. Raymond School will host a
‘dine out’ at Rigatoni’s in Dublin (7350 Dublin Blvd.).
Dine at Rigatoni’s during business hours that day and
help support the St. Raymond PTG and Enrichment
programs for our students. Rigatoni’s will donate 20% of
your bill to St. Raymond School. Such an easy and
delicious way to support our school!

Q. Why should we perform acts of penance?
A. The primary reason is that we take Christ
as our model and he himself undertook acts
of penance in preparation for his ministry and
before his passion.
