REGISTRATION IS UNDERWAY!
Fall registration is in full swing at the Preschool. With some of
our classes already full for the upcoming school year, we
would love to offer interested families a tour this month.
Enrolling for next Fall will provide your preschool-aged child
with opportunities to make friends, grow in self-confidence,
and prepare for future academic success—all while having fun
in a secure, nurturing, faith-filled environment. St. Raphael
Preschool, an award-winning school for 2–5 year-olds, offers a
wider variety of class offerings, including an extended day
through 3:00 PM!
All our teachers are certified/credentialed and lovingly foster
students’ social-emotional, spiritual, physical, and academic
growth. Large, bright classrooms are designed to stimulate
experiential learning and discovery. Creative movement,
music, and Spanish as well as cultural arts enrichments are
included in the program. All four- and five-year-olds also
attend the beautiful Catechesis of the Good Shepherd faith
formation program. Extended day students participate in
science, math, art, and drama activities.
See our Admissions page at www.straphaelpreschool.org for
more information on our class offerings which range from one
day a week to five days a week. We invite you to schedule a
tour by calling 865-5725 or 865-5728 to set up a tour. We
welcome your children on the tour with you!

PRO-LIFE CORNER
Our culture. . .has become hardened to many who cry out. We
idolize the strong and the beautiful and tend to disregard the weak
and imperfect. In our own lives, have we been programmed not to

Camp Living in God's Kingdom, for campers ages 4-10 and
Camp,
junior counselors ages 11+. Our theme acknowledges that we
live in a kingdom where God is King, Mary is Queen, and Jesus
is the Prince of Peace. Children explore vocations as a way to
spread the Good News of God's Salvation. Your children
won't want to miss this highlight of the Summer, so mark your
calendars now, and look for more information soon.
CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF CHILDREN/TEENS (CIC/T) is
offered for children and youth (aged 8 to 18) who have not yet
celebrated the Sacrament of Baptism. If your child is ready to
begin the journey toward full initiation into our Catholic faith,
CIC/T is the path. Contact Linda Lenzmeier at
[email protected] or 865-5715 for details.
JOURNEY TO FIRST EUCHARIST—Has your child begun asking
"Why don't I get to go to Communion?" Have you noticed a
desire in your child for fuller participation in the Mass?
Perhaps it's time to begin preparation for the Sacraments of
First Reconciliation and Eucharist. Per diocesan norms, this
two-year process begins as early as first grade. We invite you
to start talking with your child about journeying towards these
Sacraments. Contact Linda Lenzmeier at

This Lent could be a great time to get in the good habit of
beginning each day by offering the day ahead to God.
It’s amazing how this simple morning practice of a Daily
Offering Prayer can make us aware of God’s call to each of
us to be apostles of prayer: turning each moment of the day
into an offering to God for the good of the whole Church
and world. Combine the Daily Offering with an Evening
Examen of the day just ending, and you've got a regular
spiritual bookend to help you dive deeper into living your
faith in daily life.
For links to the Daily Offering and the Examen prayer, see
our website. Give it a try for a week and see what happens!

Lent
The Season of
The season of Lent is upon us. During this special season, we
embrace the themes of repentance and Baptism. Part of this
focus is through a spirit of repentance, a renewal of
Baptismal promises, and following the norms for fasting and
abstinence.
NORMS FOR FASTING AND ABSTINENCE
Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence. Good Friday, April 3,
is a day of fasting and abstinence. Fasting is to be observed
by all 18 years of age and older, who have not yet celebrated
their 59th birthday.
On a fast day one full meal is allowed. Two other meals,
sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to
each one’s needs, but together they should not equal
another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but
liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed. Abstinence is
observed by all 14 years of age and older. On days of
abstinence, no meat is allowed. Note that when health or
ability to work would be seriously affected, Church law does
not oblige.
When in doubt concerning fast and abstinence, the Parish
Priest should be consulted. Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer
are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and
Catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a
spirit of penance and of preparation for Initiation into the
Church or the renewal of Baptism Promises at Easter.
JOIN A SMALL CHRISTIAN COMMUNITIES FOR LENT! As you
prepare for the joy of the Easter Season, reflect on the weekly
scripture, deepen your faith and prayer life, and join others
from the community for fellowship. For more information or
to register to be a part of these communities, visit http://
tinyurl.com/Lent2015SCC.
COMMUNAL RECONCILIATION SERVICES
Please mark your calendars and make time to attend one of
the Communal Reconciliation services this Lenten season.
Opportunities to attend a service are abundant in the parishes
around our Diocese, with two at St. Raphael.
Date
Bishop Burbidge offers three practical suggestions for a
blessed Lent.
1. Pray: Slow down. Allow time for silence in your busy life
so that the Lord can speak to your heart.
2. Be Free from Distress: When Jesus sent his disciples, He
sent them out in pairs without any possessions. Material
items can be a distraction and burden. Walk lightly and
unburdened by these things.
3. Celebrate His Divine Mercy: Know that God loves you.
God’s mercy is greater than any sin or failure.

PARISH LIFE
All telephone numbers are area code 919 unless otherwise noted.
STATIONS OF THE CROSS will be celebrated during Lent every
Thursday at 10:00 AM, and each Friday evening at 7:00 PM.
English stations will be held in the Church, and Spanish
stations will take place in the Chapel. A different parish
ministry will host the Friday evening Stations.
EXPOSITION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT will be held this
Thursday, March 5, 7:30 AM – 8:45 PM in the Chapel. This is
the only time we will have this devotion during Lent this year.
We remember Jesus' words to St. Peter the morning of his
crucifixion: “Could you not watch one hour with me?” This is
our time to be in His presence. All are invited at any time, for
any length of time. We are grateful to those who sign up for a
specific time, and, in particular, for those who have committed
to a time each month.
FREE TAX HELP—If you have a low income, even if you speak
limited English, the St. Raphael Volunteer Income Tax
Assistance (VITA) ministry can help prepare basic tax returns
for you. Social security cards, picture ID, and all tax forms must
be brought for your session. You may be eligible for important
tax credits if you have children or support other family
members. Appointments (approximately one hour each
session) are available 9:00 AM-12:00 PM on Saturdays, in the
St. Raphael Catholic School media center (library). To schedule
an appointment in English or Spanish, call 865-5700, ext. 303.
SAFE ENVIRONMENT TRAINING—We will hold a training
session on the topic of recognizing and reporting child abuse
and neglect on Tuesday, March 3, at 6:30 PM in the Lewis
Room. This is the safe environment training that is required for
all clergy, employees, and those in leadership positions with
children and youth. As always, parents are welcome to attend.
This session is for those who are being initially trained and
also for those who need to complete their five-year renewal
cycle. Please register in advance by calling 865-5705 or
emailing [email protected].
LENTEN DINNERS ARE HERE! It's that time of year again when
you have the perfect excuse to eat out with friends and family
at our great Lenten Dinners each Friday during Lent. This year
one of the options is a baked fish plate with boiled potatoes,
coleslaw, roll, salad and beverage (tea, lemonade, coffee, or
water). We will continue to provide our other traditional
selections of fried fish, shrimp, and spaghetti, served with your
favorite sides and drinks, too. Sponsored by the Knights of
Columbus, proceeds from our suppers support the Scholarship
Fund at St. Raphael Catholic School.
MIDDLE SCHOOLERS: LOOKING TO PLAY LACROSSE? Saint
Raphael Catholic School club lacrosse is looking for boys
grades 6-8 to join its team. Participating boys must come from
Saint Raphael Parish families and provide a valid (within one
year) sports physical to participate. Players are required to
provide their own gear and sticks - many of our experienced
lacrosse players are often willing to assist with used gear, so
please ask if gear is an issue. Tryouts for parishioners will be
Monday, March 2,and Tuesday, March 3, 3:30-5:30 PM, on the
Saint Raphael Catholic School athletics field. For practice and
game schedules please visit www.saintraphaelschool.org/
athletics. If you have questions or want to register, please
contact Jake Dapolito, Athletic Director, at
[email protected].

GIVE A WEEKEND TO GOD by attending an Ignatian Weekend
Retreat. This year the retreat theme is Behold the Face of God.
Each year, parishioners of St. Raphael go on retreat at Loyola
on the Potomac – a Jesuit Retreat House in Faulkner, MD.
These weekend retreats are conducted in an atmosphere of
prayerful silence and based on the essence of the Spiritual
Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola. Open to anyone who desires
to grow in their relationship with God through prayer, the
retreat will include generous amounts of time for prayer and
personal reflection. The retreats begin on Friday evenings and
conclude with lunch on Sundays. For an informative brochure,
to make reservations, or if you have questions, contact
Monica Lavia at [email protected]. Reservations may also
be made online at www.loyolaonthepotomac.com. The fee for
the weekend is $235, however, there is a $50 discount for first
timers and youth up to age 30. A deposit is required to save
your room. Retreats for men will be held March 6–8 and
March 20–22. A retreat for women is scheduled March 13-15.
Come away and rest a while.

every Friday morning after the 9:00 AM Mass in the Ministry
Prep Room. Join us.
COMPASSIONATE CARE has launched its Renewing Hope
Grief Support Group this month. If you are considering this as
an option to assist you as you walk through grief, contact
Janet Schirripa at 865-5704 or [email protected], to
learn about the upcoming series of six sessions starting in
May. The group is also building a lending library of resources
for our members as they make the difficult transition to life
without a loved one by their side. Please let Janet Schirripa
know of your desire to donate a resource to our beginning
library. If you'd like to purchase an item and then donate it to
the library please visit the Compassionate Care web page on
the parish website and click on the list of recommended
books. Perhaps you could dedicate the book in memory of
your loved one, or share an encouraging word. What a kind
way to reach out to another who is trying to heal!

good works for those in need, joining the mission trip is
difficult due to financial constraints. Let these youth be your
vessels of faith-sharing by sponsoring them on a Summer 2015
Trip. No sponsorship amount is too small or too large. Contact
Jeremy Roca at [email protected] or 865-5726 to help.

CELEBRATING THIS YEAR OF CONSECRATED LIFE—In 2013,
Pope Francis declared that a Year of Consecrated Life (YCL) be
celebrated throughout the world. YCL began on the First
Sunday of Advent, November 30, 2014. It will close on the
World Day of Consecrated Life, February 2, 2016. Its purpose,
as stated by the Vatican, is to “make a grateful remembrance
of the recent past” while embracing “the future with hope.” At
St. Raphael, we held an Intergenerational Event, Wake Up the
World! Celebrating the Year of Consecrated Life, and boys from
our parish were able to "picture themselves" as priests or
brothers, with their smiling faces in the cut-out images.
READ & FEED NEEDS YOU—In this program, children have a
quick meal, and then work with our volunteer tutors to
strengthen skills and instill a love for reading. Could you be a
tutor? Tutors work with students 6:45-8:00 PM each
Wednesday in the Lewis Room. Tutors need to attend Safe
Environment Training and have a background check for the
Diocese. Volunteer support is also needed from program
helpers and substitute tutors. For more information and to
register for our Tutor Training, please contact John Griswold at
[email protected] or 617-828-4492.

every Friday at 7:00 PM in the Chapel, for a time of worship.

PILGRIM VIRGIN—The Legion of Mary's Our Lady of the Way
Praesidium offers the Pilgrim Virgin for home visitation to
parishioners interested in having the statue of Our Lady of
Fatima in their home for one week. Two members of the
Legion of Mary will bring and pick-up the statue at an agreed
upon date and time. Each day the family fulfills its
commitment to pray the Rosary together. To arrange, contact
Kathy Riedy at 847-1583 or [email protected].
What are you doing to celebrate? Prayers, intentions, prayer
cards, a video on consecrated life and other resources are
available at www.usccb.org/beliefs-and-teachings/vocations/
