Being sad is part of the life of each one of us individually, as families and as communities. Our sadness is
triggered by a seemingly infinite variety of causes. It can come upon us suddenly, or can grow slowly as we
gradually come to realise something is not right for us.
MARCH
We feel sad when confronted by the truth of our own sin, our own loss of health, our own diminishing capacities. We can feel sad in times of personal conflict or an experience of betrayal by someone we’ve trusted.
Sadness pops up when someone we love has received a life-changing diagnosis.

More broadly we can feel great sadness at the despair of many people, especially many young people, who
are led to take their own lives at an alarming rate here in Australia. Many of us feel sadness as we keep vigil
with the families of our two young men facing execution in Indonesia.
Then there are the tragic wounds that have been exposed in our Church and in our wider society as we keep
hearing stories of the victims of child sexual abuse. People express sadness at the perceived lack of statesmanship and good leadership in our various Political Parties. We have policies espoused by both sides of
politics, involving detention for people seeking refuge here, that our Bishops have described as inhumane
and which purport to represent the views of majority Australia.

Our sadness can also give birth to new resolve, hope and a deepening belief that in the midst of all that

THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT
REFLECTION………..………………………………..…WHY SO SAD?
Liturgy Group
Meeting P arish
House 7.30pm
Our Christian faith plumbs the depth of human tragedy and sadness, and in the death of Jesus invites us to
allow God to share our deepest sorrows with us. In the Cross on Calvary, all human suffering, all my suffering, is embraced in the death of the one sinless man that humanity has ever known. The violence and death
of Calvary gathers up the suffering of all peoples and turns our sadness inside out. This suffering, Jesus
embraces because of love. This suffering can serve to transform all our sadness as we learn to make our
own suffering a gift of love as he has done.
Just as it is taking the human family many lifetimes to learn this mystery, so it can take each of us much of
our own lifetime. Each new tragedy, conflict, betrayal, or sickness, brings its own shock and sadness.
Each new day we do well to wake up and place the day in the hands of Love, so that when new sadness
dawns in our heart, Love will be alongside to strengthen, comfort and transform.
Love transforms the death on Calvary to the joy of Easter. We wait expectantly for that day to dawn in our
hearts and in our world.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, grant that in
my frailty and sinfulness I may always keep your life
and actions clearly in my mind’s eye.
This Week… Scripture Zone
Let me make progress in living like you as far as I
can, so that I may grow up into your full humanity, and
become a holy temple in the Lord.
First Reading:
Exodus 20:1-17
May your grace go before me, and follow me, and
shine in my heart; be my guide along all my ways.
Direct my thoughts and words and actions according
to your commandments, that, doing your will in all
things, I may be preserved both here and in eternity.
Ludolf of Saxony
The Decalogue is part of the
solemn conclusion of the covenant and is best understood in
that light. It is one thing to say
“Yes”, and another to make that
“Yes” a reality in our daily living.
These “Ten Commandments”
spell out what it means to “walk
the talk”.
Response:
If today you hear his voice,
harden not your hearts.

Second Reading:
1 Corinthians 1:22-25
Just as the Israelites are asked
to trust God’s faithfulness, so
we find ourselves asked to do
the same, the difference being
the Incarnation of that fidelity—
Jesus Christ.
Gospel Acclamation
Glory and praise to you, Lord
Jesus Christ!
I will rise and go to my father and
tell him:
Father, I have sinned against
heaven and against you
Glory and praise to you, Lord
Jesus Christ!
Gospel Reading:
John 2:13-25
Jesus’ prophetic action in the
Temple is another passage
whose context should not be
forgotten. As part of the Evangelist’s “plan”, however it becomes a
reminder to us that, for Christians,
Jesus is the New Temple of
God’s, Dwelling.

OUR PARISH PRAYER
Loving God,
you are the home for our hearts’ deepest longings.
We find our way as families and as individuals only in you, through our brother Jesus,
encouraged by the breath of your Spirit.
We thank you for all the blessings we enjoy in our parish family. May we continue to share our gifts of life
and love with glad and generous hearts.
May our world be somehow more alive because we have passed this way.
May Mary our parish patron continue to inspire us as we give new birth to your Word in our turn.
We make our prayer in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
