Uber connects drivers and passengers through a mobile app and operates in over 50 countries and 200 cities, including Australian capital cities and some regional centres. Founded in 2009, Uber are considered a major disruptive force in urban passenger transport and are backed by major investment firms, including Goldman Sachs, Google Ventures as well as a number of hedge funds. In 2013 USA Today named Uber tech company of the year. Uber offers a number of different services, including UberX, a lowcost service in which a driver’s personal car is used. UberPool allows multiple users to ride together, to increase efficiency and reduce costs. Professor Graham Currie, Monash University Professor Currie is a renowned international Public Transport research leader and policy advisor with over 30 years experience. He has published more research papers in leading international peer research journals in this field than any other researcher in the world. Professor Currie has worked for some of the worlds leading Public Transport Operators including London Transport. Professor Currie is also a specialist advisor to international agencies on planning transport for major special events and has worked on all the summer Olympic Games since 1996 and the Hajj pilgrimage in Mekka, KSA. Phil Carter, Arup Phil is an urban and transport planner with over 15 years’ experience gained through his time living and working in Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom. Phil has assisted companies such Google and governments in the areas of strategic transport planning, emerging city systems, smart streets and integration of land use and transport planning. Phil brings expert knowledge on global mobility trends and emerging technologies such as driverless vehicles, big data and real time/personalised travel. Phil considers the role of these technologies on cities, businesses and personal travel patterns and how technology can benefit and influence mobility. Professor Currie specialises in research on transport futures, methods to evaluate major infrastructure projects, methods to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of transport system design and operation, research exploring factors influencing travel behaviour and the social and economic influences and impacts of travel. Dr Elliot Fishman, Institute for Sensible Transport Elliot is a transport innovation specialist, with over 10 years experience advising governments and large organisations. He is Australia’s most published researcher on global bike share systems and has advised the New York City Department of Transport and Transport for London on their bike share programs. In 2008 he advised the Prime Ministers Office on oil vulnerability in Australian cities, during the height of the petrol price spike. Dr Fishman has discussed Australian transport challenges in articles for The Age and the Herald Sun. He has also appeared on Channel 7’s Sunrise program and many ABC radio interviews. He is currently Guest Editor of the journal Transport Reviews and won best paper at the 2013 Australasian Transport Research Forum.
