BROWN for Lecture and Book Signing Author Margaret Walker (1915– 1998) has been described as “the most famous person nobody knows.” It is a shocking misperception of a woman who was an award-winning poet, novelist, essayist, educator, and activist as well as friend and mentor to many of our most prominent twentiethcentury African American writers. Song of My Life (University Press of Mississippi) intends to reintroduce Margaret Walker to readers by telling her life story—a story that many can relate to as she overcame familiar obstacles related to race, gender, and poverty. Song of My Life opens with her family and those who inspired her—her parents, her grandmother, her most important teachers and mentors—all significant influences The Southern Cultural Heritage on her reading and writing life. MARCH 2015 P AGE 3 Cooking Gumbo with Tom Ramsey Join Chef Tom Ramsey on Monday, March 23rd from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. as he instructs and entertains everyone on how to make two delicious gumbo recipes. One is a classic family recipe for a dark seafood gumbo. The other will be a lighter version of chicken gumbo with a blonde roux. Tom Ramsey is a chef, sommelier, writer and media personality living in Jackson, MS. At his “day job” as Chef and Proprietor of La Finestra.
