Last Monday at Saint Patrick’s Catholic Cathedral in Armagh, Archbishop Eamon Martin, Catholic Archbishop of Armagh and , primate of all Ireland, and Archbishop Richard Clarke, Church of Ireland Archbishop of Armagh, launched a new ‘Flesh and Blood Ireland’ (FaB) campaign in order to mobilise people to help increase the number of blood and organ donors. Welcoming the donation initiative Archbishop Eamon said, “The FaB campaign calls on all of us to recognise the importance of being an organ or blood donor, and it challenges us to recognise the need to respond with an act of generosity and love. It aims to raise the profile of donation within our Churches and encourages donation as a personal gift.” People who have given or received blood or organs in the past, A Benefit Night and those who have lost love ones as a result of a lack of blood or organ donation, were in attendance at the launch. Leixlip on Saturday 7th March at Benefit Night The ‘Flesh and Blood Campaign’ will have its Dublin launch on Friday 6 March in Saint Patrick’s Church of Ireland Cathedral. Dr Eddie Rooney, chair of the Northern Ireland Committee for blood donation has said that, in the 32 counties, around 800 people are currently waiting for an organ transplant with 96,000 people receiving blood transfusions every year. According to the Irish Blood Transfusion Board only 3% of the Irish population gives blood. 3,000 blood donors are needed each week, while one in four people will need a blood transfusion at some point in their lives. Over 1,000 Irish people receive transfusions every week in Ireland. Approximately 70,000 patients will have transfusions in Irish hospitals this year. A unit of blood lasts for just 35 days. There are currently 650 patients awaiting transplantation. One donor can potentially help nine other people. 8.30 p.m. €10 per person. Most times we take the things around us for granted. If it is there now then it was always there or if I use it for that then it was always so. But sometimes great gems are hidden in plain sight and we only have to look afresh to see them. So what am I talking about? Well would you consider pepper something special. That spice you put on your food? Sure pepper is only used to flavour your food? Well maybe pepper has a bit more up, its sleeve. The peppercorn is in fact the dried fruit of the plant Piper nigrum which grows extensively across Asia including India and Vietnam. The different types of pepper are the same plant but harvested at different times and processed differently, for example black pepper is the cooked and dried unripe fruit, green pepper is the dried and unripe fruit while white pepper is the ripe fruit seeds). The majority of people are familiar with the taste and smell of pepper which is strong and pungent, mainly due to volatile-oils, such as piperine. Pepper itself is a good source of minerals like potassium, calcium, zinc, manganese, iron, and magnesium all of which have important and critical functions within the body. Pepper also contains many vital B-complex groups of vitamins such as Pyridoxine, riboflavin, thiamin and niacin. It is in addition a good source of many anti-oxidant vitamins such as vitamin-C and vitamin-A. It also contains other chemicals which are known to have disease preventing and health promoting properties. As such pepper has been used traditionally for a wide range of conditions including upset stomachs, malaria, bronchitis, cholera and cancer. The effects on the stomach and digestion are thought to be due to carminative actions which reduce wind and bloating including an increase in gut motility as well as improved digestion by increasing gastro-intestinal enzyme secretions. It is also considered to have properties which reduced inflammation. Topically, it is sometimes used directly on the skin for nerve pain. As I mentioned above we are probably most familiar with pepper on our food, however, even here it can surprise us in what this plant can do. Did you know that piperine can increase absorption of a wide range of nutrients from food including selenium, B-complex vitamins, beta-carotene. For me this is the most exciting. To think that when you put pepper on your food it is increasing the absorption of all the good nutrients in your food, So the humble peppercorn has lots of hidden talents. "Use your brains!" they say, which is telling us to think. We think with our mind, the brain being the extraordinary tool it uses. Thinking goes to a higher plain when we start reasoning - 'putting two and two together.' We're always doing that, working out all sorts of things, many of which don't matter that much. The big day will come for each of us, however, when the God who gave us life will want to know what we did with it. As we know, there is the Particular Judgement, when we will stand alone in Heaven's spotlight, and the General Judgement, when we will all stand before Him. The Particular Judgement will come, even for those who don't believe in it. What is true does not come from what a man believes: it is objective, and independent of what any human being thinks. In Australia we have a rock - you might have heard of it - it's ancient name being Uluru, given it by our aborigines, or Ayer's Rock, after the first white man to see it. It is six miles around the base, and 1,000 feet high, and that's only the tip of it. I was telling someone in England, Ireland or somewhere about it, and they didn't believe me. The Rock didn't disappear because he wouldn't believe it was there: neither does God. We know about God from two sources: Reason and Revelation. We know so much about Him because He revealed Himself to us, starting way back with Abraham and culminating in coming here Himself in the person of Our Divine Lord, Jesus Christ, who is as much an historic figure as Julius Caesar or St. Patrick, and can be known as such from undeniable sources. Those who have never had the advantage of knowing Revelation will still have to answer to Him, for He will expect them to know a fair bit about Him from using their brains. St. Thomas Aquinas, of course, gave us his five proofs for the existence of God: from motion, cause, contingency, perfection and design. I always liked the last one - it was simple, the proof from design. I had the joy of being in St. Patrick's Cathedral, Armagh. It's got to be as beautiful as any in the world. Had someone told me all that carved stone and marble, and all that fine mosaic which covers nealy all the interior just came together when an earthquake threw all the stuff into the air, and it landed in that beautiful order, I would have called his psychiatrist. So, perhaps, when He judges us, He will expect each to have known at least something about Him and about good and evil. Ignorance of these things does not make innocence John W. Let us use fasting to make up for what we have lost by despising others. Let us offer our souls in sacrifice by means of fasting. There is nothing more pleasing that we can offer to God, as the psalmist said in prophecy: A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit; God does not despise a humbled, contrite heart. Offer your soul to God, make him an oblation of your fasting, so that your soul may be a pure offering, a holy sacrifice, a living victim, remaining your own and at the same time made over to God. To make these acceptable, mercy must be added. Fasting bears no fruit unless it is watered by mercy. Fasting dries up when mercy dries up. Mercy is to fasting as rain is to earth. However much you may cultivate your heart, clear the soil of your nature, root out vices, sow virtues, if you do not release the springs of mercy, your fasting will bear no fruit. When you fast, if your mercy is thin your harvest will be thin; when you fast, what you pour out in mercy overflows into your barn. Therefore, do not lose by saving, but gather in by scattering. Give to the poor, and you give to yourself. We are now expected to take this level of bias as normal. That’s just not acceptable. It is a waste of time complaining about the media and then doing nothing practical to address the problem. That’s why we are holding an event outside the Dáil on 11th March to challenge the media on their bias. It will be the start of a campaign to take the message of media bias to every corner of the country. But the size of the turnout on 11th March is critical to the future success of this initiative. A small amount of processing is necessary to make these valuable cereals digestible. Unfortunately a large percentage of the cereals processed for human foods are processed far beyond what is desirable, robbing them of very important nutrients such as iron and B vitamins. Promise your baby that you will only ever give him the wholegrain cereals. With bread, it is important to start reading labels. Some “brown bread” is little more than dyed bleached white bread! A horrifying thought. As always, start with just one wholegrain, (not wheat). See how baby gets on with that grain before introducing any other grain, or any other new food. Always introduce new foods one at a time. Wait until you’re sure the new grain agrees with him, so as to observe closely for any adverse reaction. Refined grains cause untold damage: Western societies suffer many illnesses as a result of regular consumption of these highly refined foods. Examples common in our culture are white bread, white pasta, pearled barley and polished/white rice. There is a long list of nutrients which are removed in excessive processing of grain foods, to make a lot of our common grain foods, such as bread, pasta, rice, barley. And that is only half the story. The ingredients which are added to these foods are a list to be reckoned with. In the last few decades, medical research is finally filtering down to the ordinary consumer with the message that eating a lot of refined foods is not good for us. And that we need to replace most of our carbohydrate/starchy foods with the much healthier whole versions, especially our grains/cereals. Whole grains are superfoods. Refined grains are very poor, nutritionally, and for fibre. Fibre contains no nutrients, but is extremely important for our health. A low-fibre diet is a high cancer diet. For all these reasons, we should ensure our diet is rich with whole grain foods. For ordinary purposes, the whole grains need to be milled into rolled oats, wholemeal, or wholegrain flour, such as used in fine wholegrain bread, wholegrain pasta, or wholegrain rice and barley. And that’s all. Added bran often masks what is to all intents and purposes a fake brown bread. Bran contains no nutrients. Added bran should really only be taken on medical advice. Too much fibre can actually sweep out some valuable nutrients from your system, before your body has a chance to benefit from them. The cure for lack of fibre, where grains are concerned, is to replace refined white bread/pasta/rice/barley with their wholegrain forms. At a recent gathering in Cihost' commemorating the priest's brutal death, his current successor at the parish church says he's grateful for efforts to overturn the decades-long silence on atrocities against Catholics in the 20th century. “Naturally, I am glad that the issue of Father Josef Toufar is starting to be resolved in which it will be shown how the political regime in our country actually was,” Father Tomas Fiala told CNA. During the season of Advent in 1949 – the early phase of the communist era in Czechoslovakia – Father Toufar and some parishioners said they saw a cross at the altar in the church moving from one side to another several times. The event has come to be known as “the Cihost' miracle.” To prevent the news of the phenomenon from going public, the secret police interrogated Fr. Toufar, demanding that he say that he had moved the cross himself. The priest, however, refused. In response, the police beat him so drastically that he was unable to speak, walk or sit. A series on food & health Bone health ... part 2 From the age of approx 25 our bones can start to deplete in density Usually though for women they remain fairly stable until the age of menopause, when the oestrogen levels in the body can drop rapidly for some, certainly not all women. So what can you do to keep your bones in tip top shape? The good news is a lot but the secret is putting it into action NOW, not in 5 or 10 years time. Many assume their bones are fine because they have had no incidents, accidents, falls or breakages. This is not an accurate or reliable source of bone health. Literally , you could be a walking ‘honeycomb’ in waiting for an accident to happen. There are four main methods used to check bone health. Dexa scan.( Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry) It is X-Ray based, unfortunately it is radiation ( and i’m certainly not a fan of x-rays but at this time it is the lesser of two evils) but you can take precautions against it such as taking barleygrass,NAC, Yellowdoc herb, fennel etc which help move the toxicity from your body. The world Health organisation defines osteoporosis measurements as a T-Score compared to that of a young adult.A T-score of more than (-1) is considered normal. A score of between -1 and -2.5 is classed as osteopenia ( bone thinning, which can be reversed which is why early detection is so important.) and a score lower than -3.5 is categorised as osteoporosis. Ultrasound Bone scanner : passes an ultrasound though the heel bone.Results can vary on it and therefore it is not as reliable as the Dexa. It can act as a guide to tell you what zone you are in but I firmly believe the Dexa scan to be the best giving you specific area scores. Bone Turnover analysis. This test is more rare and only tells you how quickly your bone turns over/breaksdown. It does not tell you the bone quality or density. it is measured through a urine sample and is more used in cases where the treatment of osteoporosis through medication is being monitored Blood calcium levels. This is not a very reliable way of telling the health of your bones as it is only determining the level of calcium in the blood and can indicate other things such as the health of your parathyroid etc. Lots of my clients are misled with these results. Normal blood testing limits for calcium medically must fall between 2.152.55mmol/L. The higher the level of blood calcium the greater the risk of the calcium deposits hardening arteries and muscles, which is exactly why calcium supplements got very bad press a few years back. I will explain more about that very important subject later. Your calcium blood levels have to be maintained within a fine balance therefore your body will do what it has to , to maintain this level even take calcium form your blood if so be needed. Evangelicals have several terms for what is required for salvation: "Accept Jesus as personal Saviour"; “Ask Jesus into your heart"; etc. While the concept is correct, these terms are found nowhere in Scripture. Protestant theology teaches that faith alone is sufficient for salvation; and it is true that "believing" is necessary for salvation (John 3:16; 1:12), some passages state that believing alone is not enough (James 2:14-26; John 2:23,24; Acts 8:9-24). Church teaching reflects all the Scriptures; one must repent, believe, and be baptized. It is intriguing that so many Evangelicals who claim to hold to Sola Scriptura believe that Baptism actually does nothing. When you ask older people what is their greatest fear they will say it is getting Alzheimer disease. This is a very understandable and totally legitimate fear. We have no drug treatment or way of preventing Alzheimer disease and we still do not know the exact cause. However we do have a greater understanding of the underlying brain changes and the risk factors associated with Alzheimer disease. Alzheimer – the most common form of dementia – affects over 40000 people in Ireland. That figure is expected to rise to over 80000 by 2030. The overall cost of dementia care each year is 1.7B. A recent study of the risk-factors suggest that one third of cases are potentially preventable. We need to reduce risk-factors such as low levels of exercise, high blood pressure, depression, obesity, diabetes and smoking. Whilst these findings are enlightening there is no guarantee that the implementation of such findings will prevent Alzheimers. There are however a number of interventional trials presently being carried out at TCD. Large numbers of older people are taking part in trials that reduce the risk-factor. These are being compared to another group of older people where the risk factor remains the same. When completed these trials will tell us whether riskfactor reduction – such as increased exercise etc – can prevent or delay the onset of Alzheimer disease. Irrespective of the findings older peoples’ health will benefit greatly from these lifetime changes – regular exercise, a healthy diet, brain stimulation and social interaction. Indeed, one of the most beautiful ways to prepare during Lent for the glorious Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ at Easter is meditate on the Stations of the Cross. This devotion goes back to the earliest times of the Church and has evolved over time. The object of the Stations is to help the faithful to make, in spirit, a pilgrimage to the major scenes of Christ's sufferings and death. Today, it has become one of the most popular of Catholic devotions. It is carried out by passing from Station to Station, with certain prayers at each and devout meditation on the various events of Jesus’ Passion, His suffering and death. Although it cannot be confirmed, it is believed that the Blessed Virgin Mary made daily visits to the places where her beloved Son suffered so much for the sins of the world. This should not be difficult to believe. What mother would not have done so? Blessed Anna Catherine Emmerich describes also, in great detail, how the Virgin Mary erected a ‘Way of the Cross’ near Her home in Ephesus where She lived with St John until Her Glorious Assumption into Heaven. The stations can be seen today in all churches, although some of the modern depictions of the sorrowful Way of the Cross are not conducive to proper meditation and leave a lot to be desired as regards their art content! Nevertheless, it’s the thought that counts and it is most pleasing to Jesus when we meditate on His sacrifice. If such a correlation exists between posture and mood, then should the relationship in fact work in reverse? A Research Study will take place in B-Active Fitness Club in Celbridge on 15 Mar 2015. The study will be carried out by an Osteopathic Medicine student – Pamela Coffey – who will be looking for volunteers to participate in the study for her final dissertation. Aim of Study: to gather data from a sample of the population and to use this data to investigate if there is a relationship between mood and posture. What will happen on to you if you take part? You will come to a room in the gym at an allocated time and complete a questionnaire that contains 24 questions. Then you will be asked to stand against a tiled backdrop with a plumb line at your back. Measurements will be taken to assess your posture. Photographs will be taken from front and side angles. No names/face shots will be used in the final report. It will not be possible to identify you in the final report. The total time you will be in the room will not exceed ten minutes. This research is being undertaken on healthy adults changed between 21 and 40 years of age. Non gym members are also welcome to take part in the study. On the first day of the week we gathered together to break bread… Acts 20:7 It is true that the Catholic Church, through the authority of Christ, replaced the Hebrew Sabbath (Saturday) with the Lord's Day (Sunday). This occurred very early, well before the time of Emperor Constantine in the fourth century. For Christians two important events happened on Sunday. First, the Resurrection of Christ occurred on Easter Sunday (John 20:1ff). Secondly, the Holy Spirit descended upon the Church on Pentecost Sunday, fifty days later (Acts 2:1ff). Also after His Resurrection, Jesus appeared to the Apostles twice, each on Sunday (John 20:19 & 26). As a result, Sunday was known as the Lord's Day. (It is necessary here to bear in mind that our modern calendars have switched Monday to the place of Sunday as the first day of the week!). There are many claims that there is no evidence in the Bible for the shift from Saturday to Sunday. However in the fourth century, St. John Chrysostom cited Acts 20:7 as testimony. According to this verse in the Bible, the disciples assembled together on Sunday, the first day of the week, to celebrate the Lord’s Supper: On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul talked with them... [Acts 20:7] It is interesting to note that St. Paul had spent a week with the community in Troas (Acts 20:6), and he celebrated the "breaking of bread" (Mass) with them on ‘the first day of the week’. One would expect St. Paul to object to this practice, if it were not rooted in the Church founded by Jesus. According to St Paul, [Col. 2:16-17], the Hebrew diet, festivals and Sabbaths are no longer obligations for Christians. These were only a foreshadowing of things to come in Christ. The focus now is Christ (2 Cor. 3:7-17). Elsewhere St. Paul told the Corinthians to contribute money to the Church each Sunday (1 Cor 16:1-2). This would be a strange request, if Christians assembled on Saturdays! Proving once again that the Catholic Church, founded by Jesus Christ, has got it right!! Please ask for help – I’ll leave it at that for today! Today’s column is going to concentrate on some very serious research results emerging from a major scientific study. Scientists will soon be able to predict whether teenagers are likely to become heavy drinkers, by looking at whether they carry a particular gene linked to thrill seeking – this all comes from a detailed scientific study. The researchers said the first findings will help them to develop better ways at identifying children who are at risk of misusing alcohol. A study involving hundreds of teenagers found that a gene called RASGRF-2 plays an important role in predisposing some individuals to heavy or frequent drinking. The same gene is also known to be involved with “demand and anticipation of the brain”! Scientists believe this research will give a greater understanding of how alcohol affects people in different ways. People seek out situations which fulfil their sense of reward and make them happy so if your brain is wired to find alcohol rewarding you will seek it out. This comes from Professor Schermann of the Institute of Psychiatry in Kings Hospital, London. Previous tests on laboratory mice has shown that the RASGRF-2 gene influence whether particular animals seek out alcohol and their behaviour is tied in to alcohol providing a sense of reward - what they had to do to get it didn’t seem to matter. The most up to date part of the study looked at variations of RASGRF-2 gene among 663 boys aged 14 years. In this we found that RASGRF-2 plays a vital and crucial role in controlling how alcohol stimulates the brain to release dopamine and hence trigger the feelings of reward. “So” he said, “people who have a genetic variation of the RASGRF-2 drank much more frequently and much more heavily. The research was Pan European and followed boys from fourteen to sixteen. Interestingly they found that their contempories who did not have the gene consumed almost 41% less alcohol and consequently got themselves into 41% less trouble! Another way of looking at this is my own drinking story. I certainly drank as a reward but I also got a destructive buzz out of it. I became very selfdestructive and couldn’t seem to see what I was doing. In particular I lost all sense of feelings for other people. At the end of the day I was the only one that counted! Self-centred wouldn’t do it justice. So how can the above help you? Well you can keep a close eye on the various aspects shown about. If you can teach them that not everyone in life is a reward candidate for them and encourage them to start caring and sharing with their siblings. Try and moderate the ‘reward’ factor – much of what children do around the house should be expected of them anyway!
