Smoky Lake cabin to be included in Alberta Film Town of Smoky Lake council is looking forward to the town participating in an Alberta Film project about cabins. During its March 4 meeting council embraced the idea of inviting Marla Touw with Alberta Film to include the Luis Bartle cabin in her production. “It would be excellent exposure for our area,” said CAO Harvey Prockiw. Coun. Pat Palechuk asked if the cabin is in good enough condition for pictures. Coun. Randy Mykitiuk said the last cabin Bartle built will be good for this. It was also a really good time to bond with teammates; seeing that there were hours of free time in-between rounds. I felt that the competition helped our team grow both score wise and to kick up our dedication to the sport. Competing with, and against, other skillful shooters in a different environment improved our shooting. Castor was not only a good experience for the world’s team, but also for the young shooters. The kids enjoyed themselves in Castor and in my opinion it was a good experience for us. It also gave the older shooters a chance to demonstrate skills and show what a very competitive style of archery looks like. Many parents and family members drove hours to support their children and our school. I believe that having that many people show up to support us is really special. It shows how important archery is to all archers and our school. --Emmalee Connolly Smoky Lake contributes to STARS fundraising event The Town of Smoky Lake is donating $100 to the annual Radway and District Friends of STARS fundraising banquet and auction. During its March 4 meeting council considered a request to support the STARS event to be held April 18 in Newbrook. Coun. Dan Kotylak commented that it is on the same evening as the RCMP Ball in Smoky Lake. The letter from the event organizing committee included an invitation to attend and a request for a monetary donation or an item for the silent or live auction. CAO Harvey Prockiw siad he thinks the town did not contribute to the event last year. He said council could choose to give a donation, perhaps $100. Coun. Dianne Ross moved that the town donate the same amount as in the past, but if nothing was given last year, a donation of $100 be made this year. Her motion passed unanimously. Mayor Ernie Brousseau was absent. Prockiw later confirmed the town did not donate to the STARS event last year. This year’s donation will come from the $9,000 Grants to Individuals and Organizations budet. Thank You! Grant totally funds cost of purchasing waste-recycling bins The Town of Smoky Lake will get new sidewalk waste and recycling bins this summer. The cost of the bins is covered by a $20,000 grant from the Alberta Beverage Container Recycling Corporation (ABCRC). Town administration has been working on this for nearly a year. After several months during which administration tried to get grant approval for bins from local suppliers, CAO Harvey Prockiw presented council with quotes from non-local suppliers the granting body had approved. “Let’s go with one of these and get it done,” said coun. Randy Mykitiuk. “Get the brown ones.” Council accepted the CleanRiver Recycling Solutions quote of $17,900 for 15 square bins. They are double bins with one side for garbage and the other for recycling. ABCRC is a provincially incorporated not-for-profit product stewardship corporation. THE REVIEW, Redwater, Alberta, 780-942-2023, email: [email protected], www.cowleynewspapers.com, Tuesday, March 10, 2015, Page A7 Holocaust survivor to share insight on hate, bullying, forgiveness when she visits Thorhild Holocaust survivor Eva Olsson shares what her experience in a Nazi death camp taught her about hate, bullying and forgiveness. She speaks to the community at large March 22 at Thorhild Central School (TCS) and March 23 to students at TCS. Her riveting story makes everyone who hears it take a new look at themselves to see how prejudice and bullying are part of their lives...perhaps without them even realizing it. At 20 Olsson rode the Death Train from Szatmar, Hungary, to Auschwitz-Birkenau, a Nazi death camp in Poland. Packed with 100 people in each railroad boxcar, she called the trip a four-day hell. When they were finally released, instead of the fresh air and a brick-making factory they expected, they stood before a killing factory stinking with the smell of burning flesh. Now 88, Olsson is an author and public speaker telling the story from the inside of concentration camps with frankness and detail. She uses her story of the Holocaust and its extreme examples of hate, bigotry, and inaction of onlookers to address intolerance and bullying. Her experience led her to understand that being successful as a human being comes from the way you treat others. Olsson and her prison mates were liberated by British and Canadian soldiers on April 15, 1945, at 11:00 a.m. After 50 years of silence, in 1996 Olsson began sharing her horrific experiences and spreading her message of how to move on. In 2007, she retraced her steps back to the camps which took her family. Her experiences and her mission to end injustice are detailed in her novel, Remembering Forever: A Journey of Darkness & Light. Partnering with the school for this event are the Thorhild Community Church and Thorhild 4-H Multi Club. Church members are transporting Olsson to and from the event and providing some refreshments. The 4-H members will set up and clean up. “As far as I can tell, Eva herself seldom makes bullying the major focus of her talks,” said Reverend Ken Harding of the Thorhild Community Church. “Eva’s emphasis is on the evils of hate, intolerance and racial prejudices and the way those issues become justifications for bullying, as well as other behaviors.” He believes kids learn to bully from being bullied. Bullying by authority figures (who seldom realize that they are bullying) is quickly translated by young people into the realization that bullying tactics are acceptable shortcuts to desired ends. Harding thinks one of the valuable aspects of Olsson’s presentation is she offers a way to break the cycle whether bullying is caused by hate and intolerance or because it is a learned tactic to achieve desired ends. Storyteller Kathy Jessup entertains Thorhild Central students with her amazing stories. Kathy treated TCS students and parents to stories and tales during their annual Family Literacy night held Feb. 25th. Magnan, Stanford appointed to Economic Development Board Town of Redwater council was pleased to see five applications for the two vacant positions on the Economic Development Board (EDB). “It’s good to see the interest and the good quality of these people,” said coun. Jack Dennett during the March 2 council meeting. “We were actually very impressed with the letters we got,” mayor Mel Smith said. He suggested keeping the letters of interest on file in case more vacancies open up on the board. Council accepted the EDB’s recommendation and appointed Bernard Magnan and Diana Stanford to the EDB as members at large for three year terms ending April 1, 2018. Council briefly discussed rising community interest in economic development and the possibility of re-forming a Chamber of Commerce or establishing a Business Association. The EDB was increased from seven to 11 members in December 2014, and a call for letters of interest to join the board was put out in early 2015. The EDB board endeavors to have a rural community member from either Sturgeon or Thorhild county as one of its nine members at large. The other members at large must be residents of the Town of Redwater or have a vested interest in the community. The other two board members are the mayor and a councillor. Unless you print my presentation to Council in it’s entirety, one loses the connotation behind the message it sends. To take a few excerpts and make assertions and allegations when one does not have the full context is truly unjustifiable and unprofessional. With all due respect, Rose Johnson Enough with the games Thorhild Central grade 3 students, Gavin Woytenko and Nicole Nendze test out their egg drop parachute science project. Their projects passed the test if the egg, which was securely fastened into the parachute's basket, made it to the ground without breaking. Letter to editor, Sitting in Thorhild’s county meeting is truly an experience. Rose Johnson spoke down to fellow citizens today and apposing councilors from her elevated podium. Why was this delegation sitting with councilors and not at delegation area, she had no trouble standing /speaking or being heard? It was like listening to story time as a child, unbelievable and wondrous. Very similar to the Katherine Bruce delegation of stories and verbal attack on two councilors, a few months ago and other outlandish remarks about Concerned Citizens. I find it mind boggling that Reeve Wayne Croswell who talks about the lies told by Redwater Review newspaper (and that’s why we need to change newspaper at a cost of $58,000) yet lets his friendly neighborhood delegations speak in chambers where there were no truths, slander, twisted half truths, and suppositions spoken. The latest delegation also spoke of county staff being fired for leaking county information, if this is true, how did she acquire this information? This was an obvious well planned event, but to what end? Just maybe because a representative of Russell Farmer, the contract investigator from Municipal Affairs, was sitting in chambers. We need more respect shown to taxpayers by elected council and enough with the games. —Regards, Dina Jones Letter to the Editor It’s interesting to note that the article on FOIP (Freedom of Information) appeared in the next issue of the Review following my presentation to Council on Feb. 24th. And it’s a good article for all to take note. One cannot get information on on just anybody they feel like. One cannot get information on any of the councillors or the Reeve or any employee on staff. But the CAO contract is public knowledge. The CAO’s in question was not and it should have been. The residents of Thorhild County (the CAO’s employer) had every right to see the contract and to know what they were paying for. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox church Feb. 28. --photo by Barry Nyal Highway 28 intersection with Highway 831 near Waskatenau will be a 4-way stop The intersection of highways 28 and 831 by Waskatenau is being changed to a four-way stop effective March 18. Bringing traffic from all directions to a full stop is an interim safety measure until a round-about is built. At present north-south traffic on SH831 has stop signs while the east-west traffic on Hwy 28 has the right of way and a speed reduction from 100 km/hr to 80 km/hr. Alberta Transportation communications officer Christine Way said safety has been concern at this intersection, in part because the two highways do not meet at right angles and it is tricky for large vehicles to navigate the intersection. The upcoming change is posted on signs and message boards along the intersection approaches. They include the following signs: New Traffic Control, Important Intersection Ahead (with amber flashing lights) and 4-Way Stop (with red flashing lights). Rumble strips will be installed in the spring. Way advised that the design and engineering of the future round-about is well under way. She did not have a date at which it will be constructed.
