is the Celebration of Jesus’ Love for each one of us—

Ash Wednesday’s Word of God called us to:
1. Pray—with Scripture and with others, at home and church;
2. Fast—simplify and detach from things;
3. Give Alms—take home a Rice Bowl and calendar and each
family member could contribute money not spent on self or food
or things.

PARISHES and COMMUNITIES
All that we have been saying about the universal Church must now
be applied to the life of our parishes and communities. Do these
ecclesial structures enable us to experience being part of one
body? A body which receives and shares what God wishes to
give? A body which acknowledges and cares for its weakest, poorest and most insignificant members? Or do we take refuge in a
universal love that would embrace the whole world, while failing to
see the Lazarus sitting before our closed doors (Lk 16:19-31)?
In order to receive what God gives us and to make it bear abundant
fruit, we need to press beyond the boundaries of the visible Church
in two ways.
In the first place, by uniting ourselves in prayer with the Church in
heaven. The prayers of the Church on earth establish a communion
of mutual service and goodness which reaches up into the sight of
God. Together with the saints who have found their fulfillment in
God, we form part of that communion in which indifference is conquered by love. The Church in heaven is not triumphant because
she has turned her back on the sufferings of the world and rejoices in
splendid isolation. Rather, the saints already joyfully contemplate
the fact that, through Jesus’ death and resurrection, they have triumphed once and for all over indifference, hardness of heart and
hatred. Until this victory of love penetrates the whole world, the
saints continue to accompany us on our pilgrim way. Saint Thérèse
of Lisieux, a Doctor of the Church, expressed her conviction that the
joy in heaven for the victory of crucified love remains incomplete as
long as there is still a single man or woman on earth who suffers and
cries in pain: “I trust fully that I shall not remain idle in heaven: my
desire is to continue to work for the Church and for souls” (Letter
254, July 14, 1897).

Third Sunday of Lent—March 8, 2015
We share in the merits and joy of the saints, even as they share in
our struggles and our longing for peace and reconciliation. Their joy
in the victory of the Risen Christ gives us strength as we strive to
overcome our indifference and hardness of heart.
In the second place, every Christian community is called to go out of
itself and to be engaged in the life of the greater society of which it is
a part, especially with the poor and those who are far away. The
Church is missionary by her very nature; she is not self-enclosed but
sent out to every nation and people.
Her mission is to bear patient witness to the One who desires to
draw all creation and every man and woman to the Father. Her mission is to bring to all a love which cannot remain silent. The Church
follows Jesus Christ along the paths that lead to every man and
woman, to the very ends of the earth cf. Acts 1:9). In each of our
neighbours, then, we must see a brother or sister for whom Christ
died and rose again. What we ourselves have received, we have
received for them as well. Similarly, all that our brothers and sisters
possess is a gift for the Church and for all humanity.
Dear brothers and sisters, how greatly I desire that all those places
where the Church is present, especially our parishes and our com-
munities, may become islands of mercy in the midst of the sea of
indifference.

paths to each door before Mass or School begins and not been
successful.

The next stop on our CRS Rice Bowl journey is the African nation, Niger, where we’re reminded that life’s joys and challenges are often seasonal. This week we pray for people who struggle to feed their families during the hungry season—
when food is in short supply—and we commit to acting for the common good.
NIGER
Hungering for a Season of Hope
Life in Niger is ruled by the seasons. There’s the dry season, the hot season, the rainy season—and
the hungry season. The hungry season comes every year, when food supplies run out and prices
rise. Poor families face the difficult choice between feeding their children and meeting other basic
needs.
Habibou Alassane, his wife and nine children are farmers in Tourbey, a remote village in Niger. Usually during the hungry season, Habibou had to leave his family and travel—sometimes
very far away—in order to find work. If he didn’t work, his family went hungry.
But this year, for the first time in 15 years, Habibou does not have to leave Tourbey. A Catholic
Relief Services project called Bonbatu hired Habibou and other farmers to dig reservoirs. The work
provides farmers with income, and the reservoir will provide water for crops and livestock and
prepare the fields for planting.
Bonbatu means “I become stronger.” Habibou’s family is stronger. His children are well fed. And his fields are ready for
the planting season.

Jesus spent years working as a carpenter. Work is important and helps people achieve their potential. People must be
paid a fair wage to provide for themselves and their families.

structures and systems that need to be changed so
we may all break bread together.

Gospel Reflection
It is not clear to scholars exactly what precipitated Jesus’
reaction at the Temple. Jesus used a whip to drive out
the animals, and overturned tables sending people, animals, and coins scurrying in all directions. The people
took Jesus’ words literally and because of their immature
faith, they were looking for signs. That is why in this gospel where Jesus says he will destroy the Temple but raise
it back up in three days, people were dumbfounded. The
Temple had been under construction for over forty years
and was still not complete. It is no wonder when they
heard that Jesus would raise it up in three days, that they
could not comprehend his meaning. They lacked the
faith to understand that Jesus referred to the raising of
his own body in three days – a temple they did not recognize.
How many times have we seen our children use objects
for purposes other than what they were intended? On
garbage day a skateboard might become wheels for a
trash can, or a baseball bat might be used as a wood
splitter, and a fishing pole used to retrieve a ball from
the gutters. It stifles creativity to insist that items be used
for the purpose they were intended, but it does ensure
that they will last to do the job they were made for. In a
sense, this is what Jesus meant for the people to do in
today’s gospel. The Temple was God’s house and that’s
the purpose for which it was to be used. It was not a
marketplace or a bank. To see it used as such, brought
out the passionate devotion Jesus had for his Father’s
house. And with all he had, Jesus wanted to protect it.

How many “gods” do you put before God? “Idols” do
not always take the shape of physical things, things we
can touch and feel. Those are easy to recognize. Many
times they take the form of things we cannot touch and
are much harder to spot—pride, power, ego, comfort or
health.
We pray that we may learn to turn away from the false idols of
our society—those visible and invisible.

Dear Parishioners:
Today we celebrate the First Scrutiny and the Presentation of the Creed with our RCIA candidates.
To fully understand the purpose of the scrutinies, it helps to have a little history. The three scrutinies
that we celebrate within the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults are derived, in part, from the fourth
century Church’s practice of exorcism. The word “exorcism” sets many of us on edge, but these are not
the “exorcisms” of Hollywood movies, instead they can be understood more fully in the context of
Baptismal preparation.
In a Baptismal context, the unbaptized person is susceptible to the temptations to evil that surround us
every day. As baptized people, we are strengthened by the grace of the Sacraments to overcome temptations. The unbaptized do not yet fully experience that Sacramental grace. So the scrutinies, which are
used the strengthen the unbaptized elect on the final leg of their journey to initiation.
In today’s RCIA scrutinies, the elect kneel and bow their heads, while the words and actions of the exorcism are addressed
to the Trinity.

The first part of the exorcism is addressed to the Father.
The second part is a silent laying on of hands that is an invocation of the Holy Spirit.
And the conclusion is addressed to Jesus.
There is evil in the world, and, as part of the human condition, we are all injured and oppressed by it in some way. The
scrutinies are the Church’s remedy for the wounds the elect have suffered and a means of their liberation from the evil
that ensnares them. There is great power in the “awesome words” we pray over them, and we should strive to deliver
them in an awesome way.
By emphasizing the awesome power of the scrutiny exorcisms, we are being true to the historic roots of our ancestors in
faith. We have prayer cards in the narthex for the elect. Please take one on your way out and commit to praying for
that person by name throughout Lent! Thank you for your continued prayers of encouragement for our RCIA elect:

ROSE BUD for Expectant Moms!
If you are expecting a little one, we the parish would like
to pray for you throughout your pregnancy. Look for
the red rose bud in the vase with cards for you to fill out.
Prolife ministry will see to it that a rose bud will be put
at Our Lady of Guadalupe statue for the duration of your
pregnancy and your name and date due will be in the
church bulletin until you deliver. You must have a good
phone number or address or a contact person so we can
reach you after your delivery to see how you are doing
and publish your baby’s name and birthdate. At the end
of each month we pull the roses and contact each Mom
or contact person.

Eucharistic Adoration at St. Charles Borromeo is held the 3rd Monday of each month
(March 16) from 8:30am to 6:30pm, and we especially
need an individual or two for the 6:00 time slot, which
includes closing Benediction.

A quick look into the Ministries of St. Charles Borromeo
Did you know that art is being created in the rectory basement every Wednesday
morning? The Quilters are a group of women who gather to create works of beauty
that benefit St. Charles Borromeo. Some of the artwork has special names, such as
Ohio Star or Log Cabin. Six quilts per year are promised to the Ladies Sodality for the
Quilt Raffles. All of the quilts are hand sewn—no machine work. The quilters must
enjoy what they are doing. There is over 90 years of total experience in this group.
They would love to have you join them—no experience necessary. Call Frankee Tajkowski at 636-724-7112 if you are interested.
