This was a great night where we hosted visitors, particularly students and parents from the Primary School. We had large numbers of our current students assisting staff in running activities and displays for the visitors and they all did a great job. Many thanks to them all. Last week I had the great pleasure of attending the International Student Awards, in company with our International Students Co-ordinator, Ms Ogilvy. These students are an important group in our school and we always have some wonderful achievers among them. This year Martina (Hyun) Gim was our Academic Award nominee and Joy Yao was our nominee for the School Service Award. Both girls performed very well and are great ambassadors for our school. The photo shows Joy being congratulated by the Executive Director of Schools, Ultimo, Mr Murat Dizdar. On Thursday evening we hosted our annual Information Evening about the GATS program. If you have friends or family interested in entry to this program, please let them know to obtain an application th form from the Front Office. They must be returned by 3:00pm Wednesday 11 March. To celebrate International Women’s Day this week, a group of girls will be attending the Zonta International Women’s Day Breakfast, accompanied by Ms Pandelios, our Girls Adviser. Congratulations to our fantastic Zone Swimming Carnival competitors. Despite the poor weather for our carnival last week, we were able to run the events and select the team for Zone. They competed on nd Wednesday, with outstanding results: 2 in the Zone, overall. Congratulations to everyone in the team! As an addition to our School Welfare Program, in order to support students, our school is introducing a new Mentoring Program. This will assist some students in Years 8 & 9 in setting and achieving goals and making informed choices. The program is run in partnership with Raise Foundation. Raise Foundation is a registered Australian Charity which provides mentoring programs for young people, using qualified and vetted volunteers. They are supported by the NSW Government and they have worked with many schools in Sydney previously. We welcome them to partnership with our school. At our formal assemblies this week, it was great to be able to acknowledge the achievements of some of our VET students in Yr11, as well as several students who achieved Gold Merit Awards. I would also like to congratulate our amazing musical performers at the assemblies, Sophie Woolaston, Daniel Kim, Karen Chang and Paul Lee. They displayed a lot of talent! Thank you to the Year 7 parents who responded to the Year 7 Parent Survey last week. To make it a little easier for more of you to respond, we have also produced it in a Survey Monkey format. Please click on the link below and assist us by completing this survey. It will only take a few minutes. https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/RTTVVRN Mrs Jacqueline Koob Principal FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPALS YEAR 12 ATAR CLUB. Mrs Jody Engisch (Years 7, 9, 11) Mr Craig Anderson (Years 8, 10, 12) SCIENCE FACULTY The Science department received a lot of positive feedback on their displays from Open Night. Prospective parents and students loved the hands on experience offered by the staff and in the animal room. As such the Science department would like to say a few thankyous. Thank you to the P&C for support in financing the aquaponics system and thermoregulation of the animal enclosures. We would also like to formally thank Mr & Mrs McLauchlan for the ongoing support that they and their daughter Emily Rose provide to the Science department, particularly the Animal room. Such projects require significant labour, time and financial investment without which all students would miss out on the exciting and unique opportunities offered by the hands on experience with the bearded dragon, Stimsons python, multiple frog species, leaf tailed geckos and the giant burrowing cockroaches who are now happy parents. Anyone who is yet to view the animals up close and personal please contact Mr Sloane. IMMUNISATION PROGRAM 2015 NSW Health will be offering YEAR 7 students’ free vaccines three times this year. All students have been given information kits and permission forms. Those students, who are still to return their immunisation cards, please do so by Wednesday March 11, to Ms Iconomou. The schedule for the visits is as follows: Visit 1: Visit 2: Visit 3: 13/3/15 12/6/15 30/10/15 Year 7: HPV, dTpa Year 7: HPV, Varicella Year 7: HPV It is important that students have breakfast on vaccination day. If you have ANY questions about the vaccinations themselves, or your child’s vaccination history, please contact The Australian Childhood Immunisation Register on 1800 653 809, as the school is unable to provide this information. Information on the School Vaccination Program is available in languages other than English at: http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/PublicHealth/Immunisation/school_prog/languages_forms.asp Any other questions regarding the program, please phone Mrs Milligan HT Welfare Up until this point in Peer Support, students have been encouraged to respond with open thoughts to challenges and be optimistic about pursuing positive outcomes. This kind of thinking allows them to believe that new skills and strategies are beneficial and can make a difference to the outcome. Over the next few weeks students will discuss and practise a range of skills and strategies they can adopt when inevitable setbacks occur. This week we discuss reflection as a way of taking responsibility for our actions and considering how we might alter them in the future. We redefine failure as the absence of effort, recognising that results simply inform us of the next steps to take. Students are reminded that perseverance is not a case of doing the same thing over and over. Persevering in any situation requires much effort, constant reflection and sometimes a number of strategies. Congratulations to the students listed below, who have been awarded a Merit this week. Our competition for the day included Burwood Girls High School, Fort Street High School, Hunters Hill High School, Marsden High School and Ryde Secondary College. Overall Concord came second with 528 points, 35 points shy of Ryde Secondary College on 563 points. Everyone performed at a high standard in the pool and the team bonded together cheering on their teammates in the water. There were some outstanding results, including seven records broken, five of which were broken by super fish Ben Comer! Ben smashed the 12 years Boy 200m freestyle, 100m 50m backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle. Ben was also named age champion. Chris Son was named the 14 years boys aged champion, winning the 200m freestyle, 2nd in 200m individual medley, 100m freestyle and 50m butterfly. Thomas James won 5 individual events including 200m, 100m and 50m freestyle as well as the 50m butterfly and backstroke. Thomas was the overall boys 15 years age champion. Thomas also joined Cooper Steen, Marco Gallo and Mustafa Orcun in the 4x50m 17+ Boys Freestyle Relay. Not only did they win but they a smashed that has stood for 9 year record by 4seconds. This was a special day for the boys as it will be the last zone carnival they swim as a team together, as Cooper and Marco are currently in year 12. Last year the boys came second at National. Other outstanding individual swimmers, who will be representing the zone at Regional on the 17th March include: Kisha Chabo, Hobin Seo, Lachlan Georgiadis, Jake Contemplacion, Mustafa Orcun and Marco Gallo. The following swimmers will be competing at the regional as a team in relays. 12 Girls 4x50m freestyle: Grace Kiefer, Angelina Zamora, Naomi Garben and Scarlett Thuell 13 Boys 4x50m freestyle: Louis Back, Ben Comer, Ivan Ma and Hobin Seo 14 Boys 4x50m freestyle: Chris Son, Lachlan Georgiadis, Josh Nguyen and Jake Contemplacion 17 Boys 4x50m freestyle: Thomas James, Marco Gallo, Cooper Steen and Mustafa Orcun All Ages Boys 6x50m freestyle: Ben Comer, Hobin Seo, Mustafa Orcun, Jake Contemplacion, Thomas James and Marco Gallo On Tuesday, the Open Boys Knockout Basketball team travelled to Balgowlah Boys High School for their first round match of the competition. The game was very close with no more than five points separating the teams throughout most of the game. Unfortunately, the boys did not come away with the win, however it was very pleasing to see the never give up attitude the boys displayed. Great effort boys! Last week, I reported that Amy Falson, Kyla Gray, Francesca Bull, Jared McKenna, Ely Corliss and Lachlan Georgiadis were competing in the NSW All Schools Triathlon Championships. The boys finished in the top 30. Well done to all participants. Everyone found the experience challenged but rewarding at the same time. Thanks to Mrs Falson for the fantastic team shots!
