Year of Consecrated Life
Prayer for the Year of Consecrated Life
O God, throughout the ages you have called women and men
to pursue lives of perfect charity through the evangelical
counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience.
During this Year of Consecrated Life, we give you thanks
for these courageous witnesses of Faith and models of
inspiration.
Their pursuit of holy lives teaches us to make a more perfect
offering of ourselves to you.
Continue to enrich your Church by calling forth sons and
daughters who,
having found the pearl of great price,
treasure the Kingdom of Heaven above all things.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Path to Freedom
Most of us, if we were asked "Does the phrase 'the Ten
Commandments' appear in the Bible?" would likely get it
wrong, because the answer is "no." "The Ten Commandments"
is a post-biblical, phrase that developed along with an image of
God as police officer that is not found in today's passage from
Exodus. The first phrase is the key: God is the one who brings
us out of slavery; following God's law or commands is our path
to freedom. The moneychangers whom Jesus drove from the
temple were not explicitly breaking any of the commandments,
but neither were they helping people to find God's path to
freedom as they came to worship at the temple. This is an
important Lenten lesson for us. We need to stop asking
ourselves whether or not we are breaking specific rules or
regulations and instead examine our lives to see if we are truly
following a path to God's freedom through Christ.

DEADLINE IS MARCH 15 AT 10 PM.
St. Joseph— “A Table in his honor”
Many Italian St. Joseph’s Day traditions stem from the Middle Ages. The most
common story is that there was a drought and the people prayed to St. Joseph to end
the drought. They promised that if the drought ended they would prepare a feast
annually in his honor to which everyone, especially the poor, would be invited. In his
honor, the custom is for all to wear red, in the same way that green is worn on
St. Patrick’s Day.
In the Catholic tradition, St. Joseph’s Day, March 19, traditionally falls during the
fasting season of Lent that precedes Easter. That means the feasting is done
traditionally without meat. Italian recipes include pastas, fish, sweets, breads and
fava beans.
The Table, which is always blessed by a priest, would be in three tiers, symbolizing
the Most Holy Trinity. The top tier would hold a statue of St. Joseph surrounded by
flowers and greenery. The other tiers might hold, in addition to the food, flowers
(especially lilies), candles, figurines and symbolic shaped breads and pastries.
Oranges are used in abundance, which some say are for the sweetness of St. Joseph.
Reasons for doing the Table The Table is done in fulfillment of a promise made to St. Joseph to thank him for his
assistance in a time of family crises such as: Curing Illness…promising to do a Table if someone recovered. Bringing
a loved one safely back from War….common after World War II and Vietnam, signs in windows would invite any
and all to a Table being given in Thanksgiving for the safe return of a son. Tradition…after fulfilling the initial
promise, the family keeps doing a Table through several generations. Personal Devotion…a group or individual has a
desire to do a Table. Thanksgiving for Good Fortune……as a way of saying thank you for a successful business or
continued good health. Whatever the reason for the devotion to St. Joseph, it is very much part of the lives of the
people. More individuals, churches and restaurants continue to have Tables.

SOMOS TEMPLOS DE DIOS
2. Yo soy el
Señor, tu Dios…
no tendrás otros
dioses frente a
3. Nosotros predicamos a Cristo crucificado, escándalo

DEANERY AND DIOCESAN NEWS
Communication from the Bishop
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
During the weekend of March 14 and 15, our diocese will take up the Catholic Relief Services Collection. The Catholic
Relief Services Collection funds six Catholic agencies that work to serve our suffering brothers and sisters around the world.
Through humanitarian aid, resettling displaced individuals and families, and providing legal and advocacy services for migrants, the
Catholic Relief Services Collection allows us to see every encounter with a person who is suffering as an opportunity to help
Jesus in disguise.
In late 2012, a civil war erupted in the Central African Republic, resulting in a government takeover by a rebel leader whose
militia included many mercenaries. At a certain point, the new rebel government could not pay their militia, so the mercenaries
retaliated by attacking and pillaging the country, targeting many Christians. This violence continued into 2014.
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Office of International Justice and Peace (IJP) and Catholic Relief Services
(CRS) worked with the Church in the Central African Republic to raise awareness and advocate for those who were suffering. As a
result of their intervention, the United States committed $101 million for Africa Union Peacekeepers and $30 million for
humanitarian assistance. The number of African Union Peacekeepers was increased from 1,200 to almost 6,000. Through projects
like these, IJP and CRS help the Church stop violence and seek assistance for those whose lives have been destroyed by conflict.
Religious Immigration Services (RIS), a division of Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. (CLINIC), helps members of
religious communities navigate the complicated system of visa requirements and immigration laws. In the United States, a
community of three elderly sisters faced declining health, which made it difficult for them to carry out the activities of the convent
and to travel for doctor’s appointments. RIS advocates helped this community bring two younger sisters over from the Philippines.
These new sisters will be able to take care of the convent and help the older sisters continue their religious service.
CRS and CLINIC are two of the six worldwide Catholic relief agencies funded by this Catholic Relief Services Collection.
These agencies work each day to provide food, water, disaster relief, and other vital assistance to Jesus in the disguise of
suffering people.
Please be generous in the Catholic Relief Services Collection. Your support truly
makes a difference.
Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon
Bishop of Joliet
