WEST-YEN, MARLENE TERESA October 27, 1947 – March 6, 2015 Marlene passed away quietly at Grey Bruce Health Services in Owen Sound after a brief illness. She will be remembered as the loving wife of JC and devoted stepmother of Sandra (Trevor) and Kathy (Michael); proud and adoring Popo to Jonathan (Erin). After retiring, she devoted herself to volunteer work, most notably with the Beaver Valley Outreach in Thornbury. He was the youngest son of the late Ivo J and Millie (née Collins) McMurchy who farmed on the 8th Concession of the former Collingwood Township, now Town of the Blue Mountains. Don lived his entire life in the Beaver Valley and maintained a special interest in the local farming activities of his family. In 1952 he moved with his parents to Thornbury where he resided until his death. He is predeceased by his parents, his brothers Frank (and Jean), Harold (and Freda) and by his sister Jean (and Francis McKinlay) all of whom lived their entire lives in the Beaver Valley and Thornbury area as well. A dedicated and energetic organizer of people, causes, and events, Jo was an active community volunteer and leader in the Thornbury area for 40 years. She was a high school and university physical education teacher and local gymnastics coach. She was a dedicated volunteer with local schools, the Beaver Valley Agricultural Society and the Georgian Triangle Quilters Guild. Jo also spent several years as a foreman of Thornbury apple orchards and in recent years operated JoT Designed custom sewing. She has touched and inspired many people in the community. She will be remembered for her caring and creative nature, boundless energy, skill in mentoring others, ability to connect with people of all ages, and her fun-loving sense of humour. Jo will be sadly missed by husband Jim, children Jay (Mieke Fraser) and Jill (John Pedlar); sisters Elsie Matsumura (predeceased), Lil Tajiri, and May Matsumiya; and brother Ken Yamamoto, along with their families. James Racicot will be remembered as a good man. After growing up in a packed house on Beechwood Avenue in Toronto with six brothers and sisters he went on to teach in France and then was a principal in many Toronto schools. The opening of Blacksmith Public School remained a highlight of his career. After meeting Elayne Hilts/Staunton he married her despite her four children. He was proud of each of them and was a lovely dad to Maura Staunton, Sean Staunton, Kevin Staunton and Desi Staunton and a delightful grandfather to Kevan Findlay, Gaby Staunton, Hanna Chidwick, Sean Findlay and Ijeoma Staunton. He was ever quietly appreciative of people, especially his friends and family, and the best thing in life was to have a good laugh. He laughed often. At the age of 75, after having successfully beaten cancer once, Willy was diagnosed with Lymphoma. She tried every treatment available and always kept her composure and positive attitude. She deeply appreciated how hard her doctors (Dr. Aboo, GBHS and Dr. Gospodarowicz, PMH) and all the health care providers involved with her case worked to initially cure and later manage her disease. Willy leaves behind her daughter Jacqueline Van Strien (Edward Tuttle) and her beloved granddaughter Maxine. Willy lived a full and happy life and would want to be remembered in that positive light. Her other passion in her last few years was the food at the Thornbury Bakery and she could be seen their every day, chatting with everyone. He became a partner of DMR Consulting, and eventually founded his own software consulting company, working on major software projects for the Canadian banks, and other institutions around the world. His modesty, drive and discipline set a positive example for everyone around him. An avid sportsman, he enjoyed hiking, biking, sailing and skiing until the end. An active billiard player, he will be missed by his friends from the billiard club. He was an early member at the Georgian Peaks Club, a former member of the Royal Canadian Military Institute, and an active member of Rotary Club in Thornbury. Neil’s pride and joy, above all, were his grandsons Fredrik & William. He spent many happy days with them, playing at the park, skiing, listening to music, and building LEGO. An engineering student at Queen’s and a graduate of the Photographic Arts Program at Ryerson, Don had a photography studio in Brantford from 1961 to 1978. After relocating to Thornbury he continued to be an entrepreneur by opening Georgian Frame Gallery in Collingwood. After retiring from the business he worked part time for his daughter Margot who carried on with the family business; he continued assisting her until last year. Volunteerism and community were a very big part of Don’s life beginning as a Queen’s Scout Master in Langton, and continuing as the President of Brant Figure Skating Club, a member of the Kiwanis Club of Brantford and later the Collingwood Progress Club, a member of the Collingwood Museum Board, Grace United Church Board and more recently President and member of the Beaver Valley Seniors Curling Club. Professionally Don was on the Board of the Professional Photographers of Ontario and was a founding member of the Professional Photographers of Canada. In his retirement Don curled and golfed, being a member at Duntroon Highlands Golf Club. He was very active in the Clan MacNicoll, was the Commissioner of Highland Games for the Clan in Ontario for several years and he and his wife Elizabeth travelled to many clan gatherings in Canada and to Scotland. He and Elizabeth travelled extensively in their retirement and Don tended to his beautiful gardens, played internet chess with a buddy from Tillsonburg, created many solutions to make Elizabeth’s life easier after a debilitating stroke and loved the CFL. His lifelong hobby of cabinetry led him to always have a project on the go for his daughters and later it led to model ship building. Donald was the beloved husband of Elizabeth who passed away in August 2013 and will be remembered as the cherished Dad of Carla Nicolson and her husband Doug Johnston of Thornbury and Margot Nicolson and her husband Cam Trott of Collingwood. He was the adored and devoted granddad of Tori and Alex Johnston and step-grandfather of Weston Trott and his wife Saren and their son Xavier, Courtney Trott and Evan Trott. Brothers Douglas and Bruce predeceased Donald and he will be remembered as the much loved and caring uncle to Ron Nicolson of Calgary and Mary Jean and Anne Nicolson of Toronto. Cremation has taken place and friends are invited to gather for a memorial celebration of Donald’s life, officiated by Reverend Thérèse Samuel, conducted at Grace United Church in Thornbury, on Thursday, April 17, 2014 at 1:30 pm. He was born on April 10, 1926, in the Swansea District of Toronto. He was the eldest child of the late Thomas and Bertha (née Coe) Leedham. Norm attended Western Technical School in Toronto and upon completion he joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1943 and served until the end of WWII. Post war he took his apprenticeship at Stelco Swansea Works and learned his trade as a tool and die maker. In 1950 he and his business partner founded Leeson & Baxter Ltd. which he successfully owned and operated for more than 40 years until his retirement. After retirement Norm took up permanent residence on the shore of Georgian Bay in Craigleith. His favorite pastime was fishing. He also enjoyed spending winters in Okeechobee, Florida. He took up woodcarving and became quite accomplished; his work was always in demand. As a member of the Rotary Club he loved the camaraderie, the kibitzing, but most importantly being able to give back to the community. Left to celebrate his memory is his wife Doris Leona ‘Lee’ Leedham of Thornbury, his sons Ken Leedham (Keri-Lyn) and Glenn Leedham (Dianne), his sister Lois Murison (John), and his brother-in-law Lynn Chaulk. Norm is also survived by his son through marriage, Dale Hewgill (late Betty), and by their children Ryan and Megan and by his daughter through marriage, Pam Hewgill. He will be fondly remembered by his many nieces and nephews and their families. Norm was predeceased by his sister Joyce Chaulk in 2008 and his stepmother Isabel in 1999. Harvey was born in Howick Township on December 6, 1925, a son of the late Edith (née Milligan) and John Sangster. He was predeceased by his beloved wife and partner Jean Viola (née McAllister) in 1997 and is lovingly remembered by their children: Charlie Sangster and his wife Gwen of Utterson, Betty VanderLinden (late Bill Nixon and late Dale VanderLinden) of Clayhurst, BC, Lyndia and her husband Gerald Jackson of RR 1, Clarksburg, and Brenda (late Terry) Brasier of Lindsay.
