Comments From The Coach
Bosko Medakovic,
Senior Coach – Boys Mini Football & Development (FA Level 2)
'No Respect, No Referee = No Game' – Get The Message And Support The FA’s Respect Campaign!
I read with interest last month, an article in a national newspaper about parental touchline behaviour at games
involving youngsters, with the feature photo alongside showing U8's in action. The article was about a league in
Halifax, Yorkshire who had tackled parental touchline shouting and abuse by introducing a 'Silent Sunday' initiative.
The scheme was aimed at getting all parents who watched games to do so in complete silence, and just leaving
the youngsters to play and the referee to officiate. Hailed a 'huge success' by the event organiser, the league felt
such future days may well follow.
Whilst I wholeheartedly deplore negative touchline behaviour and comments, it seems that this strategy is taking
away the involvement and excitement that many parents experience who follow their youngsters in the correct
manner, because of a few mindless individuals who don't! What a pity! For me, grassroots sport is about positive
participation both on and off the pitch by all concerned, and such a draconian scheme serves only to stifle this.
Why not just ban those very few idiots who cause the problems? Ok, in this particular case, the sport was rugby…
but my view still holds for football.
At L&BBFC we have codes of conduct for staff, players, and spectators (parents). These feature for all to see on
our club website, and copies can be obtained by emailing our Club Secretary. They exist so that we can all enjoy a
pleasant experience at games and sessions. It therefore goes without saying that those folk who can't comply,
need not bother attending as they won't be welcome!
Staying in Yorkshire, I then read a further article a few days later about an U16's Team Coach and a two club
officials who have received near 3 year bans by the local West Riding FA for falsifying a result! The local Selby &
District league found the trio had falsely claimed that a game that was never played, had ended 32-0 in their
favour; a result that would have landed them the title on goal difference! Clearly this 'win at all costs' attitude takes
the meaning of this phrase to a new and desperate level! Why are we not surprised!
That said, I am not a fan of goal difference being used by junior grassroots leagues to settle matters where teams
are tied on points. I am an advocate of using 'head to head' results to settle such. A league title should be decided
by how the two competing teams that are tied at the top, got on against each other, and not by how many goals
they have whipped everyone else by, particularly the bottom sides!
Apart from stopping the false reporting of results as above (extreme in this case, I know), more importantly such a
system also helps encourage better sides to respect lesser ones as well as play their fringe players more often
because goals are of less importance. If they are still tied, then why not look at disciplinary points (yellow and red
cards accrued) to resolve it. Look to reward the teams that have better behaved above others that haven't! I have
put these notions forward at relevant meetings I have attended whenever the opportunity presents itself, but it's up
to the leagues to adopt this, at the end of the day, assuming enough clubs want it!
Still looking at the papers, I then came across an article about a 12 year boy who was lucky to be alive! It seems
that whilst waiting to play football in an Edinburgh high school PE lesson, the youngster was foolishly swinging on
the 6ft high goal crossbar. Inevitably, the bar broke and came crashing down on the lad, knocking him unconscious
and breaking his neck. Having to cope for a two month period wearing a neck brace, the keen footballer will no
doubt look back and realise just how very foolish whilst extremely lucky he has been!
The FA's Goalpost Safety initiative has been around for a long time and specifically highlights the dangers of folk
swinging on the structures. Indeed, on several occasions, I too have had to tell youngsters I have seen do this, not
to do so. As a 13 year old, I recall dislocating my shoulder when I fell awkwardly from swinging on a crossbar, so I
know it isn't a wise thing to do. Goals are not constructed for this purpose and I would urge every player, coach,
parent, and supporter to help enforce this. The reasons are obvious and take it from me… lessons need not be
learnt the hard way! For more details about goal post safety, visit http://www.thefa.com/News/myfootball/facilities/2011/nov/GoalPostSafety
Finally and somewhat much closer to home, you will have seen the local press about FA Coach, Ted Grizzell. I can
confirm that to our knowledge, this does not involve anyone connected with L&BBFC and as I write, is still an
alleged matter that is subject to an ongoing police investigation. However, until such time as the issues are
clarified, we understand that as part of the process, quite rightly, Ted is prevented from continuing with his
coaching activities. We further advise that if anyone has any concerns about this matter, then they should contact
Pat Lewis, Club Chairman, in the first instance.

L&BBFC’s…
As we grow, running a successful junior soccer club such as L&BBFC can only continue if there are
dedicated, volunteer staff in place to oversee and deliver the aims of the club. At L&BBFC, we are
fortunate to have many such folk in post, holding key positions. However, there is always room for
more which is why we are interested to hear from people who would be prepared to help out,
particularly in the following urgently needed voluntary roles:
 Team & Assistant Coaches
 Events Co-Ordinators
 Grounds Person(s)
 Club Secretary
 Safeguarding Administrator
 Vice Chairman
Many of our members have come up with great ideas and activities for our club, but all too often
things don’t happen because we haven’t got the staff available to ensure they can, or because existing
staff are already stretched covering other important duties! This is where you can help! Interested
persons are asked to contact Pat Lewis, Club Chairman. Check out our website – www.lbbfc.co.uk - for
job descriptions and volunteer application forms. Please note that in the interests of child protection,
club staff are required to undergo the FA DBS process.
Football can be fun – so please get involved!

Calling All Budding Young Soccer Volunteers Over 14 Years Old!
You may be wondering where you go to continue developing as a coach after completing your school leadership
award. The Football Association has launched the F.A ‘Football Futures' Scheme in which young coaches get
rewarded for the hours that they complete within a local junior football club.
As a young coach you can take part in this rewarding programme for ‘FREE’ by completing the relevant application
form found on the FA’s website, use the link via the Links Page on the L&BBFC website! You could also potentially
be selected to attend a National F.A Young Leadership Camp! Coaching experience can be gained through L&BBFC,
but before 'Football Futures' application forms are submitted to the WFA, you are asked to contact Bosko
Medakovic, Club Senior Coach - Development, in order to ensure that your request can be accommodated.
At L&BBFC, we want to continue to encourage such participation & development, and consequently, we currently
do have some of our more senior players helping out with coaching sessions for our younger ones. This initiative
is a great way in which relevant members can receive formal recognition for their efforts in this respect, and for
such youngsters to be able to move on up through to the next stage in the soccer coaching ladder! Again,
interested applicants are asked to visit our website – www.lbbfc.co.uk - for more details about this fantastic
initiative. Applicants need to be 14 years old or over.

It has been another relatively quiet month on the competitive fixture front. Only a small handful of games took
place given recent weather conditions and the February school half term break. There were two heavy defeats for
our U11's Borough and our U12's Hornets, who despite the occasional moment, have found points in their
respective divisions, hard to come by.

AFRICA REVISITED…
Back in 2013, our then U15's Celtic Team Coach, Tony Smith supported a Castlemorton Primary School exchange visit
to Africa, to the Boraba Lower Basic School in the Gambian central region. This year, Tony revisited the school along
with his daughter Erin, a current member of our U13's County squad. Tony & Erin organised football sessions for the
students as well as handing out shirts kindly donated by the Badgers, which were gratefully received by the staff and
pupils. Our photo shows Erin (back row left) with the youngsters. Photo courtesy of Tony Smith – Feb 2015
The Badgers FC & County FA Celebrate…
Figures just out
show an increase in
the number of
Licensed Coaches in
Worcestershire…
The WFA has reported that
figures received last
month show that the
Licensed Coaches figures
for Worcestershire in 2014
have increased by 3.5%
(15 Coaches) on the
previous year. It is good news that locally the County are growing as some are decreasing in
their numbers. Currently, Worcestershire is operating with 429 Licensed Coaches in the area.
Nationally the figure is now at 31,504 and has increased on last year’s figure also so it is proving that
people are still keen to learn and develop their coaching skills and are prepared to back that with a
qualification. It is understood that the FA are very pleased with local efforts to promote structured
coaching programmes within the Worcestershire region.
For more information on training please visit the WFA website then click on the FIND A COURSE box
on the website homepage, or by contacting the County Offices for further information – 01905 827137.
The Worcestershire FA are continuing to help and support those who are a part of the licenced coaches
club and it looks forward to this number growing in 2015!
At L&BBFC we have seen nine new coaches join us during 2014. Of which, five are now Level 1
qualified, and four are looking to do likewise over the coming weeks. We are delighted with this increase
which enables us to continue to sustain teams for our eager young footballers. We already have seven
coaches lined up for at least four new club sides that will feature in the local league from September
2015. More are always welcome!
Club Senior Coach – Development, Bosko Medakovic claimed, 'We are always interested in attracting
suitable volunteers to the club. We just can't do what we hope to for our 200 odd members without a
team of dedicated volunteers in place to under pin our football programme.'
He added, 'More recent coaching recruits to our club include, Tom Denty, Josh King, Melissa Edwards,
Kevin Williams, Smiley Malevu, and Alex Warner. Along with colleagues already at the club, together
they enable football to be delivered by L&BBFC, in a safe and structured manner, and they all deserve a
lot of credit for stepping forward and getting involved!'
Football can be fun – so please get involved!

Calling All Volunteers…
Your Club Needs You!
Following the announced resignations, for personal reasons, of three
key members of our club senior officers, L&BBFC is looking to find
suitable replacements to fill the following posts. L&BBFC is completely
staffed by volunteers who help make the Badgers a successful FA
Charter Standard Community Club, to be enjoyed by around 200
youngsters. We cannot achieve this without the dedicated
contributions made by our fantastic team of volunteers!
The following roles are essential and key to ensuring that the club can look to continue…

Club Secretary – Are you administratively minded with good IT skills, a good communicator, and
someone who is able to attend about eight league meetings a year? We need a Club Secretary
to oversee the main administrative functions of our club, liaising with the league, WFA, and other
club staff.
 Safeguarding Administrator – Are you administratively minded with good IT skills, a good
communicator, and someone who is tactful and discrete? We need a Safeguarding Administrator
to manage a very important and 'must do' duty placed upon the club by the FA. The role will need
to ensure that all appointed club staff who have child supervisory and care responsibilities
undergo the DBS checking process.

Vice Chairman – Are you someone who can help oversee the running of our successful club,
working alongside a team of other senior club officials? We need a suitable individual to assist
our Club Chairman in leading our great little club.
Job descriptions for these roles feature on our club website – www.lbbfc.co.uk – and on average
across the season may take about an hour or two per week. The club will provide appropriate
training, support, and resources to the appointed volunteers.
If you feel you can offer the club your services, please contact our Club Chairman, Pat Lewis.
Alternatively, beforehand look to have an informal chat with any of our other existing club officers as
shown herein.
We really can't do what we do without our volunteers!

Here's Your Chance To Say Thanks In The…
The FA Community Awards
presented by McDonalds were
launched in the 2010-2011
season to recognise and
reward the people, clubs and
leagues that deliver
grassroots football in
England. The Awards are split
in to seven categories and
each category is judged at
County and regional level
before a national shortlist is
created from the regional
winners.
We feel very passionate about
these awards here in
Worcestershire, as this is a
fantastic opportunity for volunteers from grassroots football to be recognised for the valuable time that
they give. Most clubs and leagues have countless people from all walks of life giving their time without
expecting anything in return so that children and people of all ages can play football in a safe and
enjoyable environment.
The relevant 2015 Award categories open to L&BBFC are:
1. The FA Charter Standard Community Club of the Year
2. The FA Young Volunteer of the Year (under 25)
3. The FA Volunteer of the Year
4.
The People’s Award – Outstanding Contribution to Community Football
Please take 5 minutes to vote for someone at your club who you know deserves to be acknowledged
and rewarded. You can vote via the link below. Happy voting!!

Be Safe, Secure, & Comfortable…
Be On The Ball – Information for U18's
Football is about having fun, being
with friends, making new ones,
playing games, trying new skills and
being part of a team, if you want. It
should be fun to do all of these
things - having fun is what is
important.
Sometimes adults get it wrong and do things
which hurt, frighten or worry children. It doesn't
happen often in football, but it does happen. If
a child is worried about the way an adult is
behaving towards them, they feel threatened or
frightened it's important they know who to tell
and how to get help. What they are
experiencing might be child abuse.
What is Child Abuse?
Child abuse is what happens when a person, or group of people, harm a child or young person under the age of
18. Often the adult - 'abuser' - knows the child well. Child abuse can happen anywhere. There are five types of
child abuse:
Neglect - is not being looked after properly, not being fed enough or having warm clothes or a place to sleep or
needing medication when you are ill and not getting it. Physical abuse - is being hit, shaken, thrown, poisoned,
burned or being given harmful drugs or alcohol. Sexual abuse - is being touched in a way that feels wrong, being
forced or encouraged to have sex or made to touch an adult sexually even if you don't understand what is
happening or being shown sexual films or pictures. Emotional abuse - is being bullied or threatened, not being
loved but made to feel stupid and worthless. Bullying - is being hit, called names, being left out, being threatened,
having things stolen, being made to give someone money, being shouted and laughed at or being made to feel
stupid/different. It can happen via text or social networking sites like Facebook or Bebo. Abuse is never ok. It's not
your fault and there are people who can help.
Who can help?
If you are being abused or have been in the past it's important to tell an adult you trust. This isn't easy but keeping
quiet isn't the answer - you need someone to help. You might be worried about what might happen. You could be
worried about any of these things:
You may have been told to keep quiet, that no-one would believe you. You might have been threatened or they
said they would hurt your family. You might have been told you would not be allowed to play football again. You
might be worried because they are an important person in your club/football team and everyone looks up to
them. You might be worried about what your mum and dad will think. You might feel guilty that you didn't stop it
happening. You might think it will just stop!
Keeping quiet isn't the answer - by telling someone you can stop the abuse. Abuse is never ok. It's not your fault
and there are people who can help.
Know Your Rights
If you take part in football you have the right to have fun and stay safe. Your coaches are there to help you learn
safely and enjoy football. This means respecting you as a person and as a player and… being a good role model leading by example, not speaking to you in a way that makes you feel uncomfortable, not bullying you to make you
do things, treating you as an individual, thinking about you and your team-mates and not just about winning or
scoring goals, making sure the pitch/playing area and equipment are safe for you to use, having the right
qualifications to coach, making football fun!
Remember it's your right to enjoy football - don't let anyone else spoil it. If you are worried about the way a coach,
team manager, referee or anyone involved in football is behaving towards you, there are people you can talk to If
your coach needs to have physical contact to correct a technique or your positioning, they need to explain this to
you and check you are ok with this. If you are not comfortable with physical contact, you have the right to say no.
Getting Help
Tell an adult you trust as soon as possible. This could be your mum or dad or someone else in your family; an adult
at your club; a teacher; your doctor or school nurse or school counsellor. Think of who you trust and speak to them
now; remember it needs to be an adult. Or call the NSPCC helpline on 0808 800 5000. It’s free unless you use a
mobile, available all day, every day and they have trained professionals who know what to do. If you have hearing
difficulties you can use their textphone by calling 0800 056 0566. Your club has a Club Welfare Officer, they will
also know what to do find out who they are and speak to them. There are also lots of websites that give advice you
might want to email them for advice. www.childline.org.uk ChildLine offers lots of ways you can contact them:
You can send an e-mail, get support on the message boards, send your questions to ‘Ask Sam’, or remember
you can call them on 0800 1111.

HAVE YOUR SAY ON…
…In Worcestershire!
The Worcestershire FA
is conducting a
countywide survey to
see how local youth
football can offer those
involved, better and
more positive
experiences and
opportunities, as well
as improved
progression in local
football beyond the
school leaving age!
Based on the responses
received, the Worcestershire
FA will aim to work in
partnership with affiliated youth leagues and key organisations in order to grow and sustain participation within
youth football, and beyond. The survey is open to everyone who has a stake in the current set up and these include
the likes of players, coaches, parents, volunteers, and referees. Everyone involved with youth football in
Worcestershire is invited to have their say!
The survey is available on the Worcestershire FA website via this link –
http://www.worcestershirefa.com/news/2015/feb/youth-football-survey
If you have any questions, please contact the WFA development team by email:

Editor's Footnote: At L&BBFC, we welcome all initiatives that will help increase opportunities, improve
experiences, and offer folk better progression as they grow. We recognise that there is currently a massive gap
between the more positive experiences gained under youth football by all participants, from that on offer at adult
level. We believe the local grassroots adult game can learn a lot from the youth set up!
The Worcestershire FA should be commended on their looking to see how matters can be improved in this respect,
and L&BBFC asks that all our newsletter readers take the time to visit the WFA website, and complete this very
short two-minute survey!
It is all too easy to spend time moaning about the faults in our game, but when an opportunity like this comes round
to address matters, let's not let it slip. Have your say!
